A, 4 quick questions

Tell us what really matters to you.

Hello there A,

Did you know: Today is Giving Tuesday -- the biggest day of the year for many non-profits. So you can expect to see quite a few emails in your inbox today asking you for a donation. But we wanted to do something different. We wanted to take this moment to say thank you, A.

Thanks to you 2019 has been a MASSIVE year. I hope you’re proud of everything we’ve achieved together.

Whether it’s banning bee-killing pesticides or smashing censorship in China, we make quite a team. And it really got us thinking, A -- since we’re out here changing the world together, shouldn’t we know a bit more about each other?

So A, do you have a minute to answer four quick questions about what our movement means to you? Here's the first question:

Who do you think should have more power -- 7 billion people, or a handful of massive corporations?

Paov,

Our digital rights are in serious danger.

Bell is fighting the CRTC's wholesale rates, which brought cheap, fast Internet to Canada. The new government has refused to commit to privacy laws that would protect us from surveillance. And invasive, faulty facial-recognition technology is gaining steam online and in the real world.

Trade Unions and Climate Change:
The Need for a Programmatic Shift

Asbjørn Wahl

Climate change is a trade union issue. That is what we increasingly, and rightly, have been told by international trade union leaders over the last ten to fifteen years. While the inter-governmental negotiations on climate change can be dated back to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the first so-called Conference of the Parties (COP) in Berlin, 1995, it was only about 15 years ago that trade union representation at the COP conferences reached around 100 delegates. Since that, representation has been increasing, and we have seen a growing trade union activity on climate change issues.

This activity has focused particularly on the social dimension of climate change and climate change policies. Thus, the focus has been more on the effects on workers of climate change prevention and mitigation than on policies to really cut fossil fuel emissions. However, trade unions, as well as governmental bodies, cannot be assessed only on the basis of their activities, but...

In Case You Missed It

Global strike: Two million people in over 2,000 cities worldwide took part in climate strikes on Friday, setting the tone ahead of the 25th UN climate talks (COP25), which begin today in Madrid.

Their protest is a direct challenge to world leaders at the summit: Will governments dare to pass up this chance to respond to the climate crisis — with real action rather than empty words?

You've already stopped corporate lobbyists killing off the law once. Now please tweet at EU decision makers today to make sure they don’t buckle this time.

Send a tweet!

A,

It’s happening tomorrow -- the final negotiations on the EU bill to ban greenwashing in the finance industry will take place in Brussels.

Together we’ve come so far, but now we need to keep up the pressure on EU decision makers and national ministers to prevent them from buckling to corporate lobbying.

Can you tell EU policy makers to protect our planet from corporate greed?

Send a tweet!

Leaked documents suggest your message is getting through to EU policy makers -- and that they’re moving to create the ban we want.

But that’s...

The Right to Mobility

The Right to Mobility

Lynsey Hanley

The idea of mobility as a human right has come to be synonymous with private transport. For decades, the car has come first: what right does any government have to encroach on the freedom and autonomy of individual motorists? Labour governments have done little to challenge this notion since mass car ownership took off in the 1960s, and it’s only now, embracing the challenge of achieving zero carbon emissions as soon as is practicable, that Labour has recommitted itself to decent public transport.

Its 2019 manifesto states that “Labour will build a sustainable, affordable, accessible and integrated transport system, founded on the principle that transport is an essential public service.” While it may be an essential service for millions of people -- whether or not they have a car at home -- public transport has been treated as the cranks’ option since 2010 by a Conservative government that has built more roads than at any point since the early 1990s while permitting the desecration of the bus network. Bolivia: The Coup and the Right-Wing Assaults

In this interview, Corvin Russell speaks with Kathryn Ledebur of the Andean Information Network and Bret Gustafson of Washington University in St. Louis about the coup, right wing atrocities, and extreme repression currently happening in Bolivia. We examine the forces who have seized power in the coup, and address their motivations and social makeup. We also delve into prospects for Bolivia after the coup, what useful solidarity work can be done now, and the background of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) experience in government, including debates about Bolivia among the left, such as criticism centering on women’s rights and the controversy surrounding the Potosí mine deal.

Attempts were made to contact representatives of the MAS, but the extreme repression and violence directed at MAS cadre mean that most MAS cadre are now unreachable.

Québec Solidaire Congress: A Few Skirmishes, But Shift Right?
Congress focuses on completing fusion with Option nationale

Richard Fidler

In the fusion agreement with Option nationale (ON) adopted at its previous congress, in December 2017, Québec solidaire committed to aligning its program with that of ON. This was the major objective of the unified party’s congress that met in the Montréal suburb of Longueuil on November 15-17. Also on the agenda, in addition to the usual internal elections and some organizational details, was adoption of the party program on "defense and national security," left over from the QS congress in May 2017, and some "clarifications on ecotaxation" (écofiscalité), the latter item being proposed by the QS national council meeting last March.

While the 600 delegates did adopt the key provisions of the ON program proposed for adoption, the congress was traversed by an undercurrent of dissent expressed in attempts by delegates to assert control over the party’s 10-member parliamentary caucus and its leadership bodies as well as to reorient the party’s direction on some...

Stand with its people ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

The Amazon Sacred Headwaters spans 74 million acres across three huge river basins in Ecuador and Peru and is one of the most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystems on the planet. It is also home to nearly half a million Indigenous peoples from 20 different nationalities and groups (including peoples living in voluntary isolation).

Instead of protecting this vital area, both Ecuador and Peru aim to pay off their debts and bring in new revenue by expanding oil, mining, large-scale agriculture and industrial development. This will fragment vast areas previously uninterrupted by roads, and be a gateway to expanded deforestation.

Indigenous federations from the region and their allies - including Stand.earth - are calling for permanent protections for Indigenous rights and territories and an end to the expansion of new oil, mining, and other extractive activities. We are seeking global support for this declaration.

Show the profiteers that the Indigenous people of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters are not alone.

Origins of the Crisis: On the Coup in Bolivia

Origins of the Crisis: On the Coup in Bolivia

Robert Cavooris

Regarding recent events in Bolivia, some things are simple: Was it a coup? Yes. On Sunday, November 10, the commander-in-chief of Bolivia’s armed forces, General Williams Kaliman, publicly told Evo Morales, a constitutionally elected president, that he ought to resign for the good of the country. There is no other name for this kind of thing. Even if Evo had been officially accused of legal wrongdoing -- he had not -- this procedure of removal is unconstitutional. The resignation took place under an unstated threat of violence. Bolivia’s history gives reason to take this threat seriously: military coups and counter-coups were a decisive feature of political life throughout the twentieth century. And considering that the police, two days before the general’s intervention, had already decided to allow anti-government protestors to commit violence against the homes and family-members of supporters of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) party, to which Evo belongs, Kaliman’s remarks carried weight well beyond a "suggestion."

Should people with a preference...

Stop Nestlé

Ontario’s water could be up for sale again -- and Nestlé is ready to start pumping.

Tell Ford’s government to protect Ontario's water from Nestlé's greed.

Sign the petition

A,

In just three weeks, Ontario’s water could be up for grabs again -- and Nestlé’s ready to pounce.

The moratorium on new bottled water permits, that you helped secure, is coming to the end of its three year term. Ford’s government is considering extending it -- but it needs to hear from you, not just Nestlé’s cronies.

If Nestlé is allowed to open up its proposed new well, a small community outside of Guelph could be without water.

The Ontario government is taking comments for the next three weeks and a large show of support against the privatization of our water supply could make the moratorium permanent -- and set a precedent across the country.

Now is our chance to ensure, once and for all, that Nestlé can’t suck any more communities dry in Ontario.
