California of Fire and Profit

Luca Celada

California is burning. This sentence is all too familiar by now, a kind of mantra that is repeated every year with the onset of "fire season," when live television broadcasts start to show homes threatened by flames and the wails of fire sirens cutting through the sweltering air.

This year as well, the fires have targeted mainly the cities of wine country above San Francisco and the upscale neighborhoods on the west side of Los Angeles. Both regions have been hit by blazes fanned by the desert winds that kick up every fall here, with an ominous rustle of leaves that is a harbinger of more and more devastating disasters.

Two years ago, the "Diablo winds" blowing in the north of the state caused a firestorm that consumed 1,200 homes in Santa Rosa. The fire reduced the town of Snoopy to less than a ghost town, with nothing left but row after row of blackened foundations on gray ash-covered plots, the only remnants of the suburban...

British Labour: The Future is Ours to Make, Together

Jeremy Corbyn

Today we are launching the most ambitious and radical campaign our country has ever seen to bring real change to our country.

If you want to live in a society that works for everybody and not just the billionaires, if you want to save our hospitals, schools and public services from Tory cuts and privatisation, if you want to stop the big polluters destroying our environment then this election is your chance to vote for it.

The choice could not be clearer. We put our faith in the British people’s spirit and commitment to community. It’s your country. That’s why we stand with you.

Labour will put wealth and power in the hands of the many. Boris Johnson’s Conservatives, who think they’re born to rule, will only look after the privileged few.

They’ve slashed taxes for the richest and slashed vital services and support for everyone else. But real change is coming.

Beyond NAFTA and CUSMA: Democracy Not Corporatocracy

The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) falls short of any real alternative, rather it follows a long line of neoliberal trade agreements that have little to do with trade and everything to do with facilitating profit generation for multinational corporations.

We discuss the trade agenda and the current political context in Mexico and Canada as well explore alternative forms of trade and build North-South cooperation.

Moderated by Viviana Patroni. Presentations by:

  • Eladio Abuniz: National Coordinator of the Authentic Labor Front. Representative in the External Affairs Commission of the National Workers Union and workers in the hospitality and rubber sector.
  • Anna Zalik: Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University where she teaches in the area of global environmental politics and critical development studies. Her research examines and critiques the political ecology and political economy of industrial extraction.
  • Sam Gindin: Former research director of the Canadian Auto Workers from 1974-2000. Adjunct professor at York University in Toronto. Co-author of The Making of Global Capitalism (Verso).

Apple killed Right to Repair

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

When an Ontario MPP introduced a Right to Repair bill earlier this year, Apple and other Big Tech lobbies swooped in to kill it.1

Tech companies want to make sure they can keep charging you hundreds of dollars to fix your phone, laptop, or tablet—and stop you from going anywhere but their stores.2

So OpenMedia launched a campaign advocating for our right to...

Jailed, released and jailed again - free trade union leader Erlan Baltabay now!

Erlan Baltabay. In July this year, Erlan Baltabay, a leader of the Independent Oil and Energy Workers' Union in Kazakhstan, was sentenced to seven years in prison on politically motivated charges.

A huge international union mobilization followed, including a LabourStart campaign signed by thousands calling for his release. He was released from prison in August after being pardoned by the President and was able to return home to his family.

He has now been imprisoned again. His seven-year sentence was replaced with a fine. Baltabay refuses to pay the fine, because he is innocent. He demands the right to appeal his sentence.

The Kazakh authorities have jailed him, giving him a new, five-month sentence. In the eyes of the Kazakh authorities, Baltabay's real crime is defending workers' rights.

They are hoping that the international trade union movement has forgotten about him.

Let's show them they are wrong.

Click here to send a message to the Kazakh authorities, urging them to drop all charges, release him from prison, restore his rights and lift the ban on conducting public activity, including trade union activity.

Let's make this into a...

Global Israel: Securocratic War, Securocratic Borders, Securocratic Emissions

Judith Deutsch

Globally, human societies are veering toward the precipice of a cascading extinction event that is traceable to 20th century wars and to accelerated dangers following the end of the Cold War. This pivotal time could have seen the end of nuclear weapons and the near elimination of greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, the major nuclear weapons states are modernizing their arsenals, and greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 surpass cumulative emissions since the beginning of the industrial revolution. From 1990, transformations of global militarization have proven to be both a cause and effect of interconnected crises. Israeli militarization, inflicted on Palestinian people and territory, has been integral, and at times a groundbreaking catalyst, facilitator, and collaborator in this global disaster. Post-Cold War Israel put its so-called peace process in "formaldehyde" (in the words of Dov Weisglass).

Jeff Halper, a founding member of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, an anthropologist and activist, has long challenged spurious representations of Israel as victim and as a "light unto nations."...

Amazonia on Fire

Unscrupulous finance firms are making millions from corporations burning down the Amazon -- and selling it to people like you and me as "green investments".

EU-leaders have pledged to end finance greenwashing -- but they are already buckling under enormous pressure from corporate lobbyists.

Tell EU-leaders to ban greenwashing and save the Amazon!

A,

Heavy smoke cloaks their lungs and brings tears to their eyes. Painful screams fill the air as countless rainforest animals flee for their lives.

The Amazon is burning.

But while you and I watch in horror, the world’s largest investment management corporation BlackRock makes millions from the companies responsible for the Amazon fires.

The worst part? BlackRock sells this off to people like you and me as a "green investment".

The good news is: EU-leaders pledged to set an end to this practice of greenwashing earth-destroying investments. However, financial lobbyists are doing everything right now to postpone and water down any regulations.

But with public pressure mounting during last...

Globalization’s Corroding Edifice

Dara Leyden and Benjamin Selwyn

The World Bank’s World Development Report (WDR), published every year since 1978, plays a similar role to that of the state of the union address in the US, in which the president hopes to keep the faith of the Congress and public. Its task is to persuade state leaders, policy-makers and academics, directors of industry and media commentators of the ever-expanding benefits of American-led globalization. Economic growth, liberalization of trade and openness to foreign capital are part and parcel of its project of integrating the world of production, trade and finance.

WDR 2020, "Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains" (GVCs) published this month, is no exception. It boldly proclaims that GVCs "boost incomes, create better jobs and reduce poverty." These positive effects it cites are achieved through two interrelated processes. Firstly, industrial production has become globally dispersed rapidly since the 1990s. Secondly, this dispersal generates novel possibilities for firms in developing countries to integrate themselves into increasingly high-tech international production.

Global Economic Volatility and Socio-Political Reactions

Éric Toussaint, Patrick Bond, Ishmael Lesufi and Lisa Thompson

Trade and currency wars, financial volatility and economic turbulence are now the most important features of the world economy. The elements of a new international financial crisis are in place. Although we do not know when it will break out, it is unavoidable, and its impact on world economy will be as significant as the 1880s-90s, 1930s-40s and more recent 2008-09 meltdowns.

Worse, far fewer of the global capacities of the latter period – rapid lowering of interest rates, printing of money to buy up state debt (‘Quantitative Easing’), and sufficient fiscal space for bailouts – are available to global crisis managers. And most troubling, many more of the proto-fascistic political characteristics reminiscent of the 1930s are looming, especially in the new contextualizations of the Global South.

The new chemical in Canadian rivers

Chloran is the new neonic -- a toxic pesticide used by farmers that is seeping into rivers and destroying ecosystems.

Tell the Quebec government that chloran has no place in our river beds.

A,

Quebec’s rivers may soon be full of floating dead fish. The culprit is chloran -- a highly toxic pesticide planted in the soil of our farms.

In Quebec, chloran is being sprayed on over half a million acres, seeping into rivers, poisoning water insects that are critical food for frogs, fish and birds. Chloran is poisoning our rivers. Quickly.

We know that the Quebec government is serious about getting toxic chemicals off the fields as it has already begun enforcing Health Canada’s neonics ban before the deadline. A huge outcry from you now can prevent disaster for our waterways.

Stop Backing a Corrupt, Repressive and Illegitimate Haitian President

Open letter calling on the Canadian government to stop backing a corrupt, repressive and illegitimate Haitian president

In recent months, Haitians have demonstrated their overwhelming opposition to President Jovenel Moïse. There have been massive protests and multiple general strikes demanding Moïse leave. We consider their demands legitimate.

A recent corruption investigation by Haiti’s Superior Court of Auditors and Administrative Disputes accused Moïse’s companies of swindling $2-million of public money. Some two billion dollars were pilfered under Moïse’s mentor Michel Martelly from Petro Caribe, a discounted oil program set up by Venezuela. Yet, the people’s demand for justice in this money squandering scandal has been met with fierce repression. Police have killed dozens of demonstrators since anti-corruption protests began last year. In the worst documented case, the UN confirmed the Haitian government’s culpability in a terrible massacre of up to 71 civilians in the impoverished Port-au-Prince neighborhood of La Saline in mid-November 2018.
