After the Federal Election: the Dangers and Challenges that Lie Ahead

Pierre Beaudet

It is still early to interpret fully the results of Canada’s October 21 federal election. But behind the immediate results some trends are clear.

The "right-wing wave" the Conservatives hoped for proved to be little more than a ripple. In Ontario, and in particular the immense metropolitan area of Toronto, the fear campaign mounted by the Liberals was effective. Premier Doug Ford was the perfect scarecrow. The "Ford Nation" of the angry suburbanites had little presence. In Western Canada there was little change. The Tory super-majorities in Prairie ridings did little to increase that party’s overall representation in Parliament. While they picked up a few seats in the Atlantic provinces, the Liberals maintained their overwhelming majority there. In Quebec, as expected, the Tories made no headway, winning only 8 seats. Their far-right offshoot, the climate-change denier Maxime Bernier was defeated and his People’s Party of Canada went nowhere, polling less than 2 per cent.

An initial conclusion: Canada is not...

Revolution and Counterrevolution in Rojava

Fouad Oveisy

As I write, the revolution in Rojava is under existential threat. This threat was aggravated by a controversial roller coaster of recent events. After a late Sunday night phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the White House released a statement on the withdrawal of the United States military from northeast Syria. The brief statement authorized, effectively, a colonial handover of northeast Syria to Turkey. On Wednesday morning of the following week, the Turkish Armed Forces and its jihadi mercenaries embarked on a campaign of killing, bombing and looting civilians, towns and villages in northeast Syria. Thursday evening, the governments of the United States and Russia vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning the Turkish invasion.

By Saturday morning, 300,000 northeastern Syrian civilians had been displaced, at least 200 were killed, and countless more were wounded or missing. Finally, hours after news came of the fall of the border towns of Serê Kaniyê and Geri Spi on Sunday morning, Mazlum...

Bullies

A,

Giant corporations are bullying people like you and me every day. They threaten to burn down the rainforests, drill every last drop of oil, and ravage the ocean with plastic waste.

They want us to feel alone and powerless -- so we respond by banding together. That’s why SumOfUs exists.

Together we track the likes of Bayer Monsanto, Nestlé and McDonald’s. We spot where they are vulnerable. Fight them in court. Damage their reputation to hit their profits and share prices. Get laws passed to ban their poisons or destructive ways.

But SumOfUs faces a funding crunch -- less than 1% of SumOfUs members chip in regularly to pay for the technology, investigations, and high-profile actions that keep corporate giants in check.

Regular donations are the lifeblood of SumOfUs. They give us the dependable resources we need to punch well above our weight. Can you chip in?

200 yr old trees destroyed

While the Amazon burns, massive logging corporations are destroying the last of BC’s majestic old growth forests.

It’s time to put an end to the destruction -- call on BC to stop unrestricted old growth logging now!

Sign the petition

A,

Multi-billion dollar logging corporations like Canfor are cashing in on irreplaceable old growth forests in BC.

These majestic forests are home to some of the largest trees of their kind in the world and are critical to mitigating climate chaos. And yet the government has auctioned them off to logging corporations, breaking their own rules on old-growth logging.

Despite an ongoing investigation, the government is still auctioning off these precious forests. But we can still protect these ancient trees, before it’s too late. If enough of us speak out -- the government will have to act and stop old growth logging and stop pandering to rich logging corporations.

Tell BC: Enough is enough. Protect our old-growth forests and...

The Internet won, but so did the Internet Tax

Paov,

The election results are in, and we wanted to share with you our thoughts on what it means for the future of the Internet.

First, Justin Trudeau has been reelected as prime minister, but with a minority government.

That means he's going to have to work together with other parties in order to govern. As the Liberals look for support to pass new laws, every party will have some power, and whoever your MP is, their voice will matter.

We have a huge opportunity to get the parties to work together to keep their campaign promises on Internet affordability,...

Class Struggle in Chile: President Piñera At War With His Own People

Euan Gibb

Chile has been held up for decades as South America’s clearest example of the stability possible when neoliberal policies are adopted and implemented as if they were religious tenets. The country is now in a situation of open rebellion. This revolt has exploded in Chile exactly as a result of the consequences of those same policies.

President Sebastián Piñera and the Chilean government’s brutally violent repression has led to at least 18 deaths. More than 5000 people have been detained or arrested. There are literally hundreds of videos of frighteningly vicious military and police actions against the Chilean population circulating on social media. The increasingly desperate tactics of curfews, a state of emergency, repression, public denigration of demonstrators as criminals and unashamed violence are bringing more people into the streets every day. Each intensification of repression causes the streets to fill with even more energy the next day. And that energy is already incredible.

Yesterday, more than 20 ports...

Hi Friend,

It’s an exciting, historic moment! Today the BC Government introduced a law to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We are celebrating this historic occasion, and we are asking you to join us.

This legislation makes sure that Indigenous people in British Columbia enjoy the same rights and protections as everyone else in the province. If a project, or a law, or an investment impacts First Nations communities, then they...

Bolivian Horizons: An Interview with Pablo Solon

Bolivians went to the polls on Sunday, October 20, 2019. According to the country’s electoral system, in order to avoid a second round in presidential elections the leading candidate must secure 51 per cent of the vote, or more than 40 per cent of the vote and a lead of 10 per cent over the second place candidate.

With 83.8 per cent of the quick-count votes verified, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s (TSE) website indicated that Evo Morales of the Movement Toward Socialism (MS) was leading with 45.3 per cent, with Carlos Mesa of Citizen Community in second place with 38.2 per cent. It appeared as though there would be a second round. At this point, the TSE inexplicably shut down the live transmission of the quick-count tabulation of ballots after the 83 per cent of votes had been counted. Twenty-two hours later, on Monday evening, the transmission of quick-count results was restarted, with the website now indicating 95.63 per cent of votes counted. The distance between Morales, the...

Bold climate action now

Now that the election is over, its time for us to push for ambitious solutions to the climate emergency.

As the Liberals try to form government, its time to send a message to NDP, Greens, Bloc and Liberals that you want bold climate action now.

Sign the petition

A,

Now that the Canadian election is over, we need to act fast to push for real action on corporate-induced climate change.

You know know the reason for the urgency -- the IPCC report is warning that there were just 12 years left to avoid irreversible damage to the climate.

So it's no surprise that time and time again, SumOfUs members like you have said that climate change is your number one concern. Just yesterday, thousands of people responded to SumOfUs' post election survey -- and an overwhelming amount of you want us to push our government for a climate solution. And you acted too -- 7.6 million people around the world...

Rough and Plenty: A Memorial

As a Nova Scotia commercial fisher in the early 1990s, Raymond A. Rogers experienced the collapse of Canada’s East Coast fishery first-hand. During that difficult, painful, and confusing time, Rogers noticed a lone gravestone across the road from his home in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. It was the gravestone of Donald McDonald, a native of the Isles of Lewis in what was known as North Britain, who "departed his life" in 1881. The encounter with McDonald’s gravestone inspired Rogers to explore the parallel processes of dispossession and how local communities are decimated by the imposition of new ways of life.

In Rough and Plenty: A Memorial, Rogers compares the experience of dispossession suffered by nineteenth-century Scottish crofters who, like McDonald, were expelled from their ancestral lands during the Highland Clearances, with his own personal experience of dispossession when the fishing industry in Nova Scotia succumbed to the forces of capitalism in the 1990s. The book serves a twofold goal: to memorialize the loss of local ways of life in the...

About last night

r1

Paov,

I’m still processing the mixed bag of last night’s election results.

Some of our boldest champions lost in heartbreaking races after Our Time organizers poured countless hours into supporting their campaigns. At the same time, we elected powerful champions, like Leah Gazan in Winnipeg Centre, Matthew Green in Hamilton Centre and Jenny Kwan in Vancouver East, as part of an eight candidate squad headed to Ottawa to fight for a Green New Deal.

These eight candidates ran people-powered campaigns committed to a Green New Deal, and demonstrated the kind of bold leadership that we’re going to need on our movement’s side.

Climate change was, for the first time in history, a top voting issue. That’s in no small part because of the climate strikes and the organizing you did across the country these past few months. On top of this, the vast majority of voters cast a ballot for parties that promised bolder climate action – action they only committed to under massive pressure from our movement.

And, our movement is just getting started.

We’re in a critical window right now, where the priorities of our next government...

Take this short survey to help direct our campaigning after the election

With the corporate-friendly Liberal minority government in power, we have our work cut out for us.

Will you help SumOfUs decide where to put our efforts in this new political climate?

Take the survey

A,

The dust is still settling after last night’s election results. While we could have woken up to a much harsher political reality, we still have our work cut out for us with the Liberals back in power.

In the last 18 months alone, Trudeau bought a pipeline and was embroiled in the huge SNC Lavalin corporate scandal. Meanwhile, Trudeau’s Liberals refuse to seriously reduce our carbon emissions. Trudeau’s Libreal have stubbornly opposed real pesticide regulation. We know that the corporate ties between the Liberal government and big business run deep and that we’ll need all hands on deck to hold...

Catalan Independence Leaders Sentenced to Heavy Jail Terms

Catalan Independence Leaders Sentenced to Heavy Jail Terms

The savage sentences handed down by Spain’s Supreme Court against nine Catalan independence leaders have been denounced by political leaders in Quebec, including Premier François Legault. In the forefront are the deputies of Québec solidaire, who will present a motion this week in the National Assembly condemning the repression and reaffirming the right of self-determination of peoples.

"Jailing elected members because they exercised their democratic duty does not make good sense," said QS deputy co-leader Manon Massé. She was responding to a letter sent to QS by the president of the Catalan parliament asking them to find a way to help in resolving the political conflict in Spain. Massé, who had visited Catalonia in 2017 at the time of the independence vote, testified by videoconference in April during the trial of Jordi Cuixart, leader of one of the social movements supporting independence.

Campaigning in Canada’s federal election, Bloc Québécois leader Yves François Blanchet called on the leaders of the other parties, starting with Prime Minister Justin...
