Escobal Silver Mine

The Xinka People have been killed and jailed in their fight to the Escobal Silver Mine. And now, a Canadian mining company and the Guatemalan Government want to restart the silver mine.
As people living in Canada, we need to pledge solidarity with the Xinka People in their fight against the Escobal Silver Mine.
A,
For nearly a decade, the Indigenous Xinka people, living near the Escobal silver mine in Guatemala, have peacefully opposed the mine -- protecting their lands and waters from destruction. For their resistance, Xinka community members have been killed and jailed.
The silver lining was that they stopped one of the most contentious silver mines in Latin America mid operation.
But now, a Canadian mining company wants to revive the destructive mine. And the Guatemalan government is cozying up with the mining giant by ramming through a rigged consultation process that excludes the Xinka people in order to restart the mine.

Future Possibilities for the GM Plant in Oshawa
We believe that Oshawa could be the manufacturing centre for battery electric vans and other vehicles, anchored by production for Canada Post and other government bodies. Government action and a public ownership model would be required. There is growing support for this proposal from unions, community activists and environmentalists. It would keep good jobs for the community, maintain manufacturing capacity for the province and country, and help us move towards a green economy.
On September 19 we released an independent feasibility study into the possibilities of electric vehicle production in Oshawa under public ownership. We can imagine and create a better future for workers and the community.

Nestlé wants to crush a small township of fewer than 2,000 people to steal their water -- but the community is fighting back in court.
Legal costs have spiraled and they've asked for your help today.
Can you chip in to kick Nestlé out of Osceola Township?

Just four days before their huge legal showdown with Nestlé, the people of Osceola Township seriously need your help.
Nestlé’s vast water processing plant is devastating this small community in Michigan. Like a giant leech, it sucks up 350,000 gallons of water daily to bottle for profit. The town’s stream runs ever lower.
When the township fought back, Nestlé sued them -- and now the final legal showdown is just days away.
The expert lawyers they’ve hired are expensive and costs have gone through the roof. And that’s where you come in, A.
Can you chip in to keep Nestlé’s greedy hands off Osceola Township’s water?

Election Day is less than a month away, and still none of the parties have fully committed to doing everything that’s needed to lower cell phone costs and secure our personal data online.
The new Digital Charter says that Canadians will have control over our own data, but none of the parties have made clear how that will happen.1 Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) could bring us affordable cell service, but we...

Tomorrow, SumOfUs members like you are marching on TD Headquarters in Toronto. We are calling on it to stop funding fossil fuels as part of Global Climate Strike week.
Will you join in solidarity by tweeting TD while we confront executives on their way to work to defund the fossil fuels projects causing climate chaos?
A,
For the first time ever, Alaska’s sea ice has completely melted. Wildfires, floods and droughts are becoming more common than ever.
And TD bank is cashing in on it.
TD is one of the biggest funders of the climate crisis in the world -- it pours billions into funding fossil fuel projects every year.
Luckily, millions of people are speaking out as part of Global Climate Strike week. And tomorrow, my colleague Amelia is confronting executives on their way to work...

Pension Plans Should Not Invest in Companies That Harm Working People
Steven Tufts
Of all the gains unions have made for workers, the ability to retire with dignity and a pension is perhaps the most valued. Last year employers and employees in Canada contributed over $70-billion to registered pension plans (RPP). It is big money. Still, just over a third of workers are covered by RPPs as most rely on the more modest Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS).
The inequality among retirees created by different pension benefits is obvious. There are, however, other contradictions of pension fund capital. These are noted in a recent collection, The Contradictions of Pension Fund Capitalism, edited by Kevin Skerrett and colleagues. Workers continue to contribute to plans that have the "fiduciary responsibility" to deliver a return -- even if the investments harm workers and communities.
As the financial capital of Canada, Toronto is at the centre of these contradictions. Not only are the largest pension funds managed on Bay Street, but the city’s...

Hot on the heels of the single-use plastics ban at the federal level, the BC government is now considering banning plastics in the province.
Do your part to ban corporate plastics waste in BC by taking this survey.
A,
A shopping bag suffocating a seal, a turtle with a straw wedged up its nose, the insides of a bird filled with bottle caps - it’s a plastic nightmare for sea animals.
And it's caused by massive corporations like McDonald's, Tim Hortons, Nestlé and Coco-cola.
But now you have a chance to stop it in BC. The province is considering a provincial ban and wants to hear from you.
But with only a few days before the consultation process ends, time is running out to have your say.
Help stop the plastics crisis by filling out the survey to end plastic pollution today.
(You will be directed to the BC government website to complete the survey. It only takes...

Open Letter: We’re Stepping Up:
Join Us for a Day to Halt This Climate Crisis
Naomi Klein, Bill McGKibben, and others
On 20 September [through to September 27], at the request of the young people who have been staging school strikes around the world, we’re walking out of our workplaces and homes to spend the day demanding action on the climate crisis, the greatest existential threat that all of us face. It’s a one-day climate strike, if you will -- and it will not be the last. This is going to be the beginning of a week of action all over the world. And we hope to make it a turning point in history.
We hope others will join us: that people will leave their offices, their farms, their factories; that candidates will step off the campaign trail and football stars will leave the pitch; that movie actors will scrub off their makeup and teachers lay down their chalk; that cooks will close their restaurants and bring meals to protests; that pensioners too will...

A,
A brave group of beekeepers is suing the Trump administration on behalf of bees -- and they need your help today.
Trump just put the dangerous pesticide sulfoxaflor back on the market even though it’s linked to the deaths of tens of thousands of bee colonies.
We thought this was game over for bees -- and it still could be, if we don’t act quickly. The beekeepers at the Pollinator Stewardship Council are taking the Trump administration to federal court to save the bees -- this is where you come in, A.
The beekeepers are putting their business on the line to take on Trump and save the bees, so they urgently need your help to fund their legal fight against Trump and his cronies.

Canadian Unions and the Student-Led Global Climate Strike
A week of student-led global strike actions to address the climate change crisis, under the banner FridaysForFuture #ClimateStrike, was kicked off this past Friday with actions across the world. This Friday September 27 students, First Nations, workers and allies will be mobilizing across Canada in the tens of thousands.
Canadian Labour Congress Stands in Solidarity with Student-led Global Climate Strike
Students around the world are taking bold action to protect the planet, holding climate strikes every Friday, pushing for urgent and ambitious climate action to limit global warming. The strikes were started in August of 2018 by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. These #FridaysForFuture student strikes now take place in communities all over the world, including across Canada.
Students are asking Canada’s unions to stand with them for a Global Climate Strike, starting on Friday, September 20, and culminating with a global day of action on Friday, September 27, to coincide with the UN Secretary General’s climate summit, convening Monday, September 23.
