As Bolsonaro incinerates the Amazon, urgent action is needed for climate justice

Mary Galvin and Patrick Bond

Did South Africa need another high-profile reminder of climate chaos, after the Cape Town drought in 2015 to 2018; the two cyclones in March to April that ravaged Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe and killed more than 1,000 of our neighbours; and Easter Monday’s "Durban Rain Bomb," which dropped 170mm that day, leaving 71 people dead?

Unless we take action, extreme weather will be amplified further, by an extreme inferno. More than 72,000 fires are now raging across the Amazon, the world’s biggest and most biodiverse rainforest, which is 55-million years old. The lives of indigenous people who depend on the forest have received limited attention, with the world’s focus mainly on climate change. The Amazon is a carbon sink that stores carbon dioxide, and destroying the forest releases massive amounts into the atmosphere.

Amazon deforestation had declined 70 per cent between 2004 and 2012, thanks to the Brazilian Workers’ Party government’s clamp down on abusive plantations,...

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

THIS IS HUGE: The Liberal Party just joined the New Democrats and the Greens in pledging to lower wireless and home Internet bills ahead of next month's federal election.1

That means three out of Canada's four major national parties have signed on to one of the key planks of our pro-Internet campaign platform!2

This is proof that our pro-Internet campaign strategy is working....

The United Auto Workers and the Big Three Automakers: A Tale of Corruption

The United Auto Workers and the Big Three Automakers: A Tale of Corruption

Thomas Adams

What follows is a somewhat complex tale of what happens when a labor union, structured to be unaccountable to the rank-and-file membership, embraces a system of labor-management cooperation rather than a class-conscious understanding that workers and their employers are adversaries with fundamentally opposed goals and desires. Unfortunately, what is true of the United Auto Workers (UAW) is true for many US labor unions. That the UAW, an iconic union, born of heroic class struggle, could sink into corruption, with a bloated and dictatorial bureaucracy, only shows in microcosm what ails much of organized labor in the United States. And just how difficult it will be to rebuild a labor movement worthy of the name.

"Ideals get tarnished quickly under the corrosion of material prosperity." — Walter Reuther

The UAW and the Big Three automakers, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, have established a series of joint programs (described below), serving a variety of interests, all purportedly aimed at benefiting union members....

In October, we'll decide whether Parliament will continue to allow the Big Three to monopolize the Internet. If law enforcement will be...

Facial recognition cameras in Canada

OpenMedia r1

Hi Paov, hugely controversial facial recognition technology is spreading like wildfire in Canada. And right now, there are no laws to govern how it’s used.

Facial recognition technology works by scanning images or surveillance video of your face, and using computer algorithms to match it to images in a database.

It’s already being used by law enforcement in some cities in Canada, as well as a chain of popular shopping malls, who use it to monitor the...
