Solidarity and Unity in Opposing Global Militarization

Palestinian BDS National Committee

The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC), the largest coalition in Palestinian society, shares the shock and anger of Kashmiris and democratic forces in India and across the world over the authoritarian decision of the Bharatiya Janta Party-led (BJP) Indian government to effectively nullify overnight the relative autonomy of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. We denounce the increasing use of Israeli-style paradigms and policies by the current Indian government.

Introducing through presidential decree legally dubious changes to the Indian constitution, the right-wing government in Delhi has further undermined the internationally-recognized rights of the people of Kashmir, particularly their right to democratically decide on their future, without their knowledge or consent.

The Indian government imposed this decision on the 5th of August while keeping Kashmir cut off from the world, with its phone lines and internet shut down, its political leaders placed under house arrest, and its streets under a strict curfew enforced by a massive deployment of the army,...

BREAKING: Cheaper Internet

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

BREAKING NEWS: The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) just announced they’re slashing the wholesale rates that small internet service providers (ISPs) pay for access to the networks of large ISPs like Bell, Telus or Shaw.1-3

This is a huge win for Internet users across Canada. It will increase competition with more small ISPs able to enter the market, and lead to cheaper home Internet options for customers.4

Palm oil: Confiscated!

Oppose Procter & Gamble's sinister trade in conflict palm oil.

Tell US Customs to block conflict palm oil shipments before they reach US ports!

A,

BREAKING: We’ve just launched an urgent campaign to block shipments of conflict palm oil -- harvested by workers under forced labor conditions -- from entering US ports.

These ships effortlessly enter US ports on the regular, destined for companies including Procter & Gamble -- the maker of Head & Shoulders, Oral-B, Olay and Gillette.

You can help us stop the shipments! US Customs has a legal obligation to block imports linked to forced labor. So today, alongside our partners International Labor Rights Forum and Rainforest Action Network, we've launched a demand that US Customs seize...

Austerity Without End

Carlo Fanelli and Stephanie Luce

In 2019, the now 187-member International Labour Organization celebrated its 100th anniversary. As one of the oldest agencies of the United Nations, the ILO used the occasion to renew calls for improved opportunities and working conditions, social protections and collective bargaining rights. The ILO’s Global Commission on the Future of Work proposed a "human-centred agenda for the future of work that strengthens the social contract by placing people and the work they do at the centre of economic and social policy and business practice."

Because the world of work begins at home, this included calls for new investments that more evenly distribute unpaid care work, from parental leave to public care services, thereby genuinely increasing opportunities in the workplace; universal entitlements to lifelong learning via active labour market policies that provide opportunities for re/upskilling; proactive universal social protections that support people’s needs over the life cycle; new investments in the institutions of work, from regulations and employment contracts to collective bargaining and labour inspection systems; expanded...

Stop Trump's Internet speech police

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

RED ALERT: U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order creating an Internet speech police with sweeping powers to censor the Internet.

Because the Internet has no borders, Trump’s executive order would allow the voices of Canadians to be censored as well as people in the U.S. And if Trump gets away with it, you can bet that...

Protect our water from Nestlé

Nestlé's permit is coming up for renewal

Nestlé’s been pumping billions of litres of water for the last three years from a small community in Ontario -- without a permit.

Now, it’s finally applying for a new permit and we need your help to protect Ontario’s water from Nestlé’s greed.

A,

4.7 million litres of fresh water per day. That’s how much Nestlé has been pumping out of a small community in Ontario everyday for the last three years -- without a permit.

Local Indigenous communities have demanded Nestlé stop operations on their territory, while their residents lack clean water, and yet the mega-corporation keeps greedily pumping the water out.

Any day now, Nestlé will have to submit a new application for a permit and you can bet it’s hoping to do so under the radar. But if we can make a huge stink now,...

Climate catastrophe

We’re in a race against time to stop one of the world’s biggest new coal mines from being built before it ruins our climate forever.

There’s one thing that can stop this dirty coal mine from going ahead: insurance. Tell insurance giant AIG to insure our planet’s future and NOT Adani’s mine now.

Sign the petition

A,

In the untouched outback of Australia, a coal company is starting to dig a coal mine so big and so dirty that if completed, it will seal our fate to catastrophic climate change.

Coal giant Adani is doing everything it can to build what will be one of the largest new coal mines in the world. It has ignored the objections of traditional owners, scientists and conservationists, and squeezed through every legal loophole it can.

There is hope. If we can stop Adani from getting insurance for the mine, we can stop this disastrous project in its tracks.

Which is where you come in A. Public pressure...

Green Designs for 21st Century Socialism

Richard Westra

Before turning to the subject matter at hand two abiding issues in Marxist thinking need to be addressed. First, when Marx inveighed against Utopian Socialist futuristic model building, he never intended it to become a mantra dissuading socialists from thinking practically about socialist institutional design. Rather, Marx simply insisted that such endeavors only be undertaken after knowledge of the then forming capitalist economy had been produced. This is the task of Marx’s magisterial economic writing Capital that he devoted much of his life to completing. Second, while Marx’s pithy theory of historical materialism in the (in)famous Preface spells out in broad brush terms the general process of historical change: "At a certain stage of development, the material productive forces of society come into conflict with the existing relations of production," in Capital Marx offers a far more precise means of conceptualizing the specific historical transformation from capitalism to socialism.

For Marx, the most fundamental contradiction of capitalism from which its delimitation as an historical society derives...

Ways of Seeing Children: The Facile Psychology of Capitalism

Judith Deutsch

The majesty and burning of the child’s death...
After the first death, there is no other. – Dylan Thomas

The sniper who shot at Muhammad the child
Beneath his father’s arm
Wasn’t acting alone – Aharon Shabtai J’Accuse

If you are overcome by the horrific crimes committed against children and then wonder how such cruelty can be, it may help to understand stories that adults tell children in their day-to-day lives. What kinds of core beliefs justify so much atrocity? My understanding comes in part from psychoanalytic work with children and adults. From among countless children’s stories, I will focus here on Roger Hargreaves’ Little Miss Helpful and compare it to the Hobans’ A Birthday for Frances, and then touch on Israeli filmmaker Avi Mograbi’s revelatory documentary about the Masada and Samson heroic suicide-terrorism stories told to Israeli children as they grow up. (Such normalizing of the pathological is a counterpart to the practice of "Pathologizing Kids," written about recently by Martha Rosenberg and...

PC Government Plans Many More Healthcare Cuts

PC Government Plans Many More Healthcare Cuts

Doug Allan

The Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO) Economic and Budget Outlook review has identified planned government spending savings that come via [1] announced program changes (program cuts like the government’s cut to OHIP+), [2] announced efficiency targets (identified areas where the government hopes it will find savings without service cuts), and [3] cuts that have not yet been announced by the government.

While the government has identified some spending cuts of type 1 or 2 above, the government’s spending plan needs billions of dollars in extra, unidentified and unannounced cuts to meet its savings targets according to the FAO (type 3 cuts, as above). For healthcare, this amounts to $5.2-billion in unidentified and unannounced cost savings needed for the government’s health spending plan to work in 2023-24. Even though the cuts identified to date have been major and painful, $5.2-billion is many times more than the cuts announced and implemented to date.

The unidentified and unannounced health cuts exist even for this fiscal year...

India’s Kashmir Crackdown Poses Risk of War

John Riddell

On August 5, India’s Hindu nationalist government unilaterally revoked the autonomy of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, while flooding the region with troops, imposing a curfew, and shutting down all communications. The state is to be broken in two, with the eastern portion (Ladakh) under direct rule by New Delhi.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi shut down Internet connections, mobile phone services, and land-line phones in the besieged region. The fragmentary news that has trickled out speaks of arrests of leading politicians and widespread fear among the region’s 12 million inhabitants.

Presenting the stunning news to India’s parliament, India’s Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, stated that these moves would bring "better government, a flood of outside investment, and peace."

The government of mostly Muslim Pakistan has contested for influence in the region with mostly Hindu India. Pakistan now occupies the northern third of historic principality of Kashmir. Pakistan reacted to the August 5 measures with angry condemnation.

Modi...

Mass shootings

Visa could help put a stop to mass shootings. All it has to do is report excessive purchases of guns and ammunition -- like it does already when it suspects fraud or money laundering.

Let’s make Visa add excessive firearm purchases to the list of suspicious account activity.

A,

Two men used guns to take 31 lives this weekend -- and injured over 50 more.

The mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and in Dayton, Ohio took the number of mass shootings in the U.S. this year to 255. That’s more than one a day.

It’s heartbreaking to watch, and bewildering that U.S. legislators won’t enact common-sense gun laws. But we’ve found another way to take action -- one that doesn’t rely on politicians to break ranks with the powerful U.S. gun lobby.

In the past decade, more than half of the deadliest shootings were financed with credit cards. So we need to make credit card companies treat big firearms sales...
