Paov, a brand new threat to encryption in Canada has just emerged: top ministers at a meeting of the ‘Five Eyes’ intelligence alliance are demanding access to popular encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp.1
End-to-end encryption is what keeps our information online safe and private.
Tech and security experts agree banning encryption, or creating ‘back doors’ that the government can use to access privacy messages is a serious threat to cyber-security. Where there’s a ‘back door’, there’s a key....

Please email now and urge ministers to end this assault on tribal peoples' rights
Dear friend,
India’s tribal peoples are reeling under a double blow. In February the Supreme Court ordered the eviction of 8 million tribal and forest dwellers – that’s the population of London or New York.On top of this, the government, with advice from the CEO of WWF India, is proposing to change India’s Forests Act.

States and Capitalist Society
Leo Panitch
The illusions of the neoliberal era -- that the market should or even could be freed from the state, or that an unstoppable process of capitalist globalization was bypassing even the most powerful of states -- have suddenly dissipated. One of the greatest misconceptions of neoliberals was the notion that states and markets were in opposition to each other. Since then, it was only on the most superficial level that it could have been thought that states were in retreat at all. On the contrary, they have been actively engaged in spreading capitalist market relations to every corner of the globe and in every facet of life, while repeatedly intervening to try to contain the crises this sparked. It is a measure of how hegemonic the ‘markets versus states’ dichotomy had become, that even most of those who recognised the crucial link between the spread of markets and state action simply called for a return to the days when states allegedly exercised control over markets.

Monsanto is finally paying the price for selling cancerous Roundup -- the pesticide giant has had to pay out billions in lawsuits.
We can get closer to eliminating Roundup if insurance companies stop insuring glyphosate sellers. against these expensive lawsuits. Tell major insurers to stop the 'new asbestos' by not insuring Bayer-Monsanto's toxic glyphosate.
A,
Monsanto is on the line for several billion dollars in lawsuits this year for selling cancerous Roundup. Judges have seen the evidence that glyphosate, a key ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup, causes cancer, and are forcing Monsanto to pay users of Roundup that now have cancer because of their close exposure to the toxic pesticide.
Insurance companies are getting scared of these lawsuits and see this as the 'new asbestos' crisis -- already one glyphosate seller has been turned down insurance against lawsuits related to...

Dear friends,
Today, I co-signed an open letter to the CBC with some of the most renowned artists, Indigenous leaders, authors, and public figures in the country. Together, we called on the CBC’s Editor-in-Chief, Jennifer McGuire, to commit to hosting a federal leaders’ debate on climate change and a Green New Deal.
Today’s letter was signed by Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and the entire Executive Committee of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs; Chair of Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Senator Murray Sinclair; author of acclaimed novel Life of Pi, Yann Martel; my personal friend and respected author Naomi Klein; Hayden King of the Yellowhead Institute; award-winning actor, Tantoo Cardinal; Executive Director of Indigenous Climate Action, Eriel Deranger; and many more.
Read our letter, see the full list of endorsers, and send your own message to Jennifer McGuire and the CBC here.
As our public broadcaster, the CBC has a responsibility to the Canadian public to provide accurate fact based reporting in response to the climate emergency. Part of this means hosting a national federal leaders’ debate on climate,...

A Labor Strategy for the US: DSA Debates
Eric Blanc
Early next month, over a thousand socialists will gather in Atlanta, Georgia to discuss the future of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). There is general agreement across many tendencies on the need to strengthen our labor work and that the Democratic Socialist Labor Commission (DSLC) is under-resourced and could sorely use at least one full-time staffer. It is a very positive development that so many DSA members now see labor organizing as central to the socialist project.
All the main labor resolutions this year agree that we need more resources for the DSLC but not all agree on what DSA’s labor work should look like. Here’s our take on the strengths and limitations of Resolution 3 written by the comrades in Collective Power Network (CPN), one of several tendencies in DSA. In our view, Resolution 3 makes thoughtful organizational proposals and puts forward good general goals. But since CPN doesn’t call for workers to organize from the bottom up to transform the labor...

Friends,
Normally, I wouldn’t email you on a Sunday like this, but I have an important and urgent request.
In 20 minutes, the CBC’s flagship national call-in show, Cross Country Checkup, will start taking calls about climate change. We have a chance to make it crystal clear to the CBC that people all across Canada want them to host a climate debate before this fall’s federal election.
Today’s Cross Country Checkup topic is “is it wrong to eat meat?” And, while they’re making the link to climate change and animal agriculture, they’re also missing the point.
Animal agriculture is an important source of emissions for us to tackle, but climate change isn’t just about what we eat. It’s about fossil fuels and the massive economic transformation we need -- like a Green New Deal for Canada.
That’s why a climate debate is so critical, so voters like you and I can know which of our politicians have a real, comprehensive climate plan. If you click here, you’ll be taken...

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 25 July 2019
Solidarity with Korean Airline workers
Korean Air Lines (KAL) cabin cleaners are fighting back against their employer and KAL’s attempts to silence them. On April 12 the union filed a complaint against KAL’s subsidiary, Korea Airport Services (KAS), for unfair labour practices, and then began a protest encampment in front of the KAL headquarters on April 17.
The workers are now taking collective action. Today airport workers around the world are acting in solidarity with their Korean colleagues calling on KAL and KAS to stop unfair labour practices and ensure that all workers who work for KAL, including subcontracted workers, are treated with the respect they deserve.
Organized by Toronto Airport Workers’ Council (TAWC). Recorded at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), 25 July 2019.

We can win a climate debate

Friends,
On Sunday, Cross Country Checkup, the CBC’s flagship weekly call-in show, is going to talk about climate change. They’re asking people to call and weigh in on the question: “is it wrong to eat meat?” And, they’re making the link to climate change and animal agriculture.
It’s an important question and one that I, as a vegetarian, think about a lot. But, I also know that climate change isn’t just about what we eat. It’s about fossil fuels and the massive economic transformation we need — like a Green New Deal for Canada. What we do as individuals only matters if we force politicians to act with the urgency required.
That’s why we need the CBC to organize a federal leaders’ climate debate ahead of October's election and, why we need to call into Cross Country Checkup this Sunday to let them know. We’re setting up a tool to help make it easy, but the phone lines don’t open up until the show airs on Sunday, so here’s what you can do right now.

This ONE MAN is responsible for Pepsi's reckless inaction on palm oil. We have to do something NOW, we owe it to the plantation workers and the endangered orangutans, tigers, and pygmy elephants.
Let’s make this personal. Sign the petition and tell Pepsi CEO Ramon Laguarta that he must take responsibility now:
A,
Pepsi’s CEO admitted to me that his business partner and conflict palm oil producer Indofood won’t even pick up the phone to him, when I challenged him to end the dirty deal at Pepsi’s biggest shareholder meeting recently.
Indofood rips off workers with illegally low wages and destroys Indonesia’s remaining orangutan territory. Now CEO Laguarta has admitted the palm oil company is ghosting him! Surely the only option left is to cut ties?
But guess what? While food giant Nestlé has cut ties with Indofood, Laguarta is still...

They're playing ping pong with our futures

Friends,
I am still full of excitement from last week’s day of action. In case you missed it, on July 17th, thousands of people in dozens of communities, from Atlantic Canada to the Yukon, turned out push the CBC to organize a federal leaders’ climate debate during the October election.
We turned out in such numbers that the CBC made a statement, but they still haven’t committed to hosting a climate debate. Sign the petition to let the CBC know we need a leaders’ climate debate during the fall election.
They told us it’s up to the Leaders’ Debates Commission to make a climate debate happen. Funnily enough, the Leaders’ Debates Commission told us it would be up to the broadcasters to host one.
The CBC and the Debates Commission can make this debate happen. They need to stop playing ping pong with our futures and come together to do it.
Scientists have made it clear we are in the midst of a climate emergency and ecosystem collapse of an unprecedented scale. We must act now to avoid the worst of the crisis we are in. The CBC's...

Dow’s toxic pesticide, chlorpyrifos, seriously affects children’s brain development. Health Canada is currently deciding whether to kick this toxic chemical off the market.
Tell Health Canada to put our children’s health before the pesticide industry’s profits and ban chlorpyrifos for good.
A,
Agri-giant Dow’s dangerous pesticide, chlorpyrifos, has serious negative effects on our health -- especially for children. And the worst part is -- it’s all over the fruits and veggies our kids are eating.
Even in small doses chlorpyrifos can irreversibly impact children’s brain development and hormonal systems. Scientists have linked it to developmental delays in children and working memory loss.
Now, Health Canada is deciding whether to allow Dow’s dangerous chemical in our farmers’ fields and they need to hear that our children’s health is more important than Dow’s profits.
