Brave grandmother Máxima Acuña on her family farm in Peru.

Sylvia,

Brave grandmother Máxima Acuña has been beaten, hospitalized, and bullied in court by the biggest gold mining company in the world.

Our community has come together to help her before…and now she needs our help again.

For more than a decade, Newmont Mining has had its sights set on Máxima’s family farm in Peru. Newmont tried everything to turn the land into a massive new gold and copper mine, but Máxima refused to give up her home…and has paid a brutal price.

After years of lawsuits, Máxima’s legal fund has dried up. A decision on her case will come any day, but it won't be the end of the road. If she wins, Newmont will try to bankrupt her with an appeal. And if the mining Goliath wins, Máxima will have to appeal herself or lose her land. Without more cash, it's a losing battle. Can...

Sign the petition: Statehood for D.C. now!

Over 700,000 people call Washington, D.C., home. The people of D.C. pay the highest federal taxes per capita but have no voting representation in Congress. Becoming a state ends this injustice.

This is a message from a partner organization of The Intercept and does not imply the editorial endorsement of The Intercept or any of its staff. Our partner organization will collect your name and email address if you participate in the action below.

Taxation without representation was wrong in 1776, and it is wrong today. The people of D.C. pay the highest federal taxes per capita but have no voting representation in Congress. Becoming a state ends this injustice.

D.C. residents bear all the responsibilities of full U.S. citizenship: They serve on juries, in the U.S. military, and work hard to build safe, strong communities where they live. And yet the 700,000+ people who call D.C. home, the majority of whom are...

BC primary forest destruction

The UK's biggest power station is cutting down Canadian primary forest to generate electricity. And it's being heavily bankrolled through “green energy” subsidies from British taxpayers.

Call on the power station and UK and BC government officials to stop forest destruction and end greenwashing now.

Sign the petition

Sylvia,

It’s outrageous – Britain's biggest power station is cutting down Canadian primary forest to generate electricity all for the sake of profit.

Drax, the power station operator, burns millions of tonnes of imported Canadian wood pellets - which is classed as renewable energy and being heavily financed by UK taxpayers through a government 'green energy' subsidy.

But BBC and CBC journalists have discovered Drax’s business practices anything but green – some of the wood comes from an important old growth forest in BC. And burning wood produces more greenhouse gas than burning coal.

Take action to stop the primary forest destruction and end greenwashing now.

Drax says it only uses...

Dogwood News This Week: BUSTED! ...again

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Saturday February 4, 2023
Coastal GasLink had another major failure at its Clore River pipeline crossing last weekend: temporary dams ruptured, flooding the work site. Once again, mud and debris swept downstream into salmon and steelhead habitat.

The company’s public relations team is pretending they flooded their own construction site on purpose. “We initiated a temporary overflow of our barrier,” they claim. But Wet’suwet’en officials flew in by helicopter, and witnessed the site in disarray – with black sediment coating the riverbanks downstream.

Local chiefs had already busted Coastal GasLink contractors earlier this month for operating heavy equipment in the river with no sediment barrier in place –...

Why has Danone...

been drying up Mexico?

Aerial shot of the sinkhole

Indigenous activists in Mexico stopped Danone stealing their precious water before, but now the company is back.

Will you help the water defenders get rid of Danone for good?

Sign the petition

Sylvia,

“Drought equals death.” These are the words from the Indigenous group Pueblos Unidos, and exactly what Danone is contributing to in a small Mexican town.

I've seen with my own eyes the devastating impact in the region: the river is drying up, and farmers are struggling to grow crops.

Last year, Indigenous activists forced Danone to shut down its water pumping plant. But now they are back.

Danone spends millions branding itself as a sustainable water company. If we raise the alarm that this greedy corporation is circling this small town's already scarce water supply, we can shame executives to leave the region...

Palm oil

Such a mess

Oreo cookies and Toblerone bars come with a bad palm oil aftertaste. From deforestation to land grab, the palm oil industry is as dirty as it gets. The good thing is, Oreo maker Mondelēz wants to be a sustainability champion, so let’s push it to become one before it changes its mind.

Sylvia,

Oreo maker Mondelēz claims it’s “made snacking right” using only sustainable palm oil. But this is just a marketing smokescreen trying to cover up a supply chain so complicated and opaque, it’s darker than an Oreo!

The good news is that as an industry leader, Mondelēz is already keen to be a champion. All it needs is a big public push from a community like ours – and it...

Brutal Dog Slaughter

Hundreds of street dogs are being exterminated as a Moroccan city tries to "show off" for FIFA.

Calls are growing on Tangiers Municipality to stop brutally slaughtering dogs.

3 million dogs are at risk, now’s our chance to demand action.

Take Action!

Sign the petition

Sylvia,

It’s horrible to imagine: dogs shot in the streets, in broad daylight and in front of children. Dying dogs left to suffer, their mouths bleeding and their foggy eyes calling for help.

This is happening right now in Tangiers, Morocco, where municipal workers are slaughtering hundreds of dogs in preparation for a visit by FIFA officials to assess Morocco’s World Cup bid.

We can't let this go on. Morocco's national government has already signed an agreement with the national veterinary authority to prohibit the killing of dogs -- but Tangiers is flat-out ignoring it. Join the call and share...

Elon Musk censored a BBC documentary. So much for free speech.

Twitter is blocking access to a documentary that reveals Narendra Modi’s role in a genocidal massacre, just weeks after Musk banned journalists critical of him at home.

Elon Musk is at it again. Officials from India’s ruling right-wing party say Twitter complied with the India government’s demands to remove a documentary critical of the regime.

This isn’t the first time Musk has silenced journalists on Twitter.

Only a little over a month ago, he suspended the accounts of several journalists who had covered Twitter critically — reporting for CNN, the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Intercept, and more — under flimsy pretenses.

Now, new reporting reveals that Twitter agreed to censor access to a BBC documentary critical of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in a genocidal massacre in the Indian state of Gujarat.

At the request of Kanchan Gupta, the senior adviser...

Apple

Sylvia,

SumOfUs members like you made execs at the world’s most valuable company listen -- and act. Again!

SumOfUs members co-filed two resolutions at Apple this season -- on freedom of expression, and forced labor. As a result of members’ persistent shareholder activism -- that has secured the support of other investors in voting with us -- the company has promised action on both of them.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been in negotiations with Apple’s lawyers and top executives, firmly raising your concerns, as well as those of communities most impacted by their decisions. Finally, they promised to do enough to make us withdraw the resolutions!

App takedown transparency

Concern about Apple taking down apps -- especially virtual private networks (VPNs) that help people communicate safely -- to appease repressive governments like that of China, was the reason for our first campaign in 2019.

This time, a SumOfUs member co-filed a resolution with our friends at investment groups Azzad and Open Mic asking Apple to make it clearer what apps they had taken down, and why.

Apple’s Transparency Report currently only states how many apps each government has requested be removed, whether the request is based on...
