Dogwood News This Week: "impossible to confirm"

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Saturday February 25, 2023

It was a rafting crew that noticed salmon eggs in the gravel of the Wedzin Kwa (Morice River) last summer. The nests, or redds, were directly in the path of Coastal GasLink’s pipeline crossing.

How many eggs were there? And how would they be affected by the vibration of a giant drill carving out a truck-sized tunnel under the river bed?

Skeena salmon advocate Shannon McPhail called the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for answers. She waited weeks for a reply. But just hours after McPhail’s inquiry, DFO had the data. 273,000 Coho eggs was the “conservative estimate” based on stream surveys by a pipeline contractor.

These documents could expose the real truth about the Dakota Access protest crackdown

We spent two years in court and more than $100,000 to get files from pipeline giant Energy Transfer and security contractor TigerSwan. Now we have over 50,000 files to get through.

After a two-year courtroom battle with a massive energy conglomerate, The Intercept has finally obtained tens of thousands of corporate documents that could reveal the truth about the brutal crackdown on protests against the Dakota Access pipeline led by the Standing Rock Sioux.

The Intercept has broken numerous stories on TigerSwan, the private security firm hired by Dakota Access pipeline owner Energy Transfer. Now, with Energy Transfer’s documents in hand, we may finally learn how this brutal crackdown happened and who was responsible — but first we have to dig through 20 gigabytes of data containing over 50,000 files.

This kind of reporting is exactly what The Intercept was founded to...

Tell Merrick Garland: Prosecuting whistleblowers as spies betrays our democratic values.

Prosecuting those who shine a light on government abuses is harmful to the public interest and an affront to freedom of speech. It’s time for the Justice Department to protect whistleblowers, not lock them up.

It takes enormous courage to come forward as a whistleblower alleging wrongdoing or corruption by the U.S. government. Often, these brave souls are fired, demoted, ostracized, or attacked in the media for revealing information in the public interest. At worst, whistleblowers can face serious criminal charges — and sometimes years in prison.

It isn’t supposed to be this way. Under the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act of 2012, the Department of Justice established a series of rights and resources designed to protect whistleblowers from retaliation, including a national hotline under the Office of Inspector General.

Despite the critical importance of whistleblowers, both the Obama and Trump administrations found a...

Rent raised by 20%

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — When Victoria gave birth to her daughter, her landlord increased her rent by 20%. Her lease stated that there would be an increase for “additional occupants” but Victoria and her partner didn’t see this as reasonably applying to a newborn. Victoria is now fighting back, saying the rent increase is “an obvious, unethical abuse” of the lease and the Residential Tenancy Act. She’s urging British Columbia’s provincial government to amend the RTA to better protect tenants who give birth or adopt a child. You can help by signing the petition now.

Will you donate $5 to help expose white supremacists in the military?

Three U.S. Marines were given highly sensitive intelligence positions despite their participation in the worst attack on the U.S. Capitol since 1814. The reassignments raise serious questions about the ability of the military and the U.S. intelligence community to identify right-wing extremists in their midst.

Joshua Abate, Micah Coomer, and Dodge Dale Hellonen were three active-duty U.S. Marines who participated in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

All three entered the Capitol during the riot. One carried a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag. Another posted to social media that he hoped for “Civil War 2.”

And despite their participation in the worst attack on the U.S. Capitol since 1814, all three were later given highly sensitive intelligence positions.

The reassignments — which were exposed by The Intercept’s Senior National Security Correspondent James Risen — raise serious new questions about the...
