Televise Trumps Trial

This is the first-ever felony indictment of a former U.S. president. The public interest requires complete transparency from beginning to end. That means the trial must be televised.

This is a message from a partner organization of The Intercept and does not imply the editorial endorsement of The Intercept or any of its staff. Our partner organization will collect your name and email address if you participate in the action below.

Twice-impeached former President Donald Trump has been indicted by the Manhattan district attorney in New York.

Trump faces potential criminal charges in a range of cases, from federal investigations of the January 6 insurrection and alleged illegal handling of classified documents to local inquiries into election tampering in Georgia. But New York is the first jurisdiction to indict Trump on felony charges.

While the specific charges are currently sealed, the basic facts are known: Trump is accused of committing and covering up campaign...

All eyes on Wetsuweten

No matter how much our governments invest in clean energy, we will not achieve a just transition if we let Big Oil keep sucking up public money and trampling Indigenous rights. r1

Paov,

Big Oil’s grip on our political system has been on full display this week.

On Tuesday, the Trudeau government released their 2023 budget. Thanks to years of pressure from our movement, the plan includes significant new investments in renewable energy and electrification, but those investments pale in comparison to the billions in federal subsidies propping up the fossil fuel sector. Instead of keeping his promise to phase out these supports, Trudeau’s new budget funnels even more public money to Big Oil through tax breaks for fake solutions like blue hydrogen and carbon capture.1

Then, yesterday morning, a large RCMP force raided a Gidimt’en village site on unceded Wet’suwet’en territory, arresting five Indigenous land and water defenders. It’s part of a pattern of harassment and intimidation that police and private security have unleashed on Wet’suwet’en members, all for the sake of a fracked gas pipeline that directly undermines Canada’s climate pledges.2

Paov, no matter how much our governments invest in clean energy, we will not achieve a just transition if we...

Are U.S. intelligence officials turning a blind eye to far-right extremism in their ranks?

A U.S. intelligence contractor openly expressed his admiration for Putin and Hitler — and stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6. How does someone like this get top-level security clearance in the first place, much less go undetected for years?

Hatchet Speed was a virulent racist, avowed Hitler admirer, and active member of the Proud Boys who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

He was also a U.S. government intelligence contractor with top-level security clearance who wasn’t arrested for over a year after the riot. And he’s just the latest member of the intelligence community who has been identified among the January 6 attackers.

The Intercept’s reporters are uncovering a disturbing pattern of Capitol rioters with sensitive intelligence positions that raises troubling questions about whether officials are turning a blind eye to far-right extremism in their ranks, despite public pledges to...

Helping prevent election violence in Nigeria

Last month CFSC funded our partner Nonviolent Peaceforce to deliver a three-day participatory training for young leaders in Abuja, Nigeria. Conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development—a Nigerian nonprofit—the training was on prevention of violence during Nigerian elections.

42 women and men aged 18-32 participated in the training, learning techniques of violence prevention including: early warning early response, rumor control, and protective presence and accompaniment. Participants committed to: collect data to monitor incidents and promote peace initiatives; share their knowledge and skills with others; initiate online awareness on electoral violence prevention; and be present at polling stations on election day as observers.

It's a long election process, but so far these prevention activities seem to have contributed to a decrease in violence compared to previous elections.

Dogwood News This Week: Ksi Lisims

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Saturday March 25, 2023 This week another oil and gas megaproject started its B.C. environmental review. The proposed Ksi Lisims terminal would export nearly as much fracked gas as Shell’s LNG Canada complex. And it would require a whole new pipeline corridor across Northern B.C.

Enter Enbridge’s Westcoast Connector proposal, which would cut through the Skeena watershed to the Nass River. Enbridge lobbyists are pushing hard for B.C.’s environment minister to keep that project alive. Now it’s clear why.

The Nisga’a are a self-governing nation with a modern treaty that gives them collective ownership of about 2,000 square kilometres north of Prince Rupert. Like the Haisla in Kitimat, the Nisga’a have...

New documents we’ve obtained from a grueling court case could finally shine a light on the actions of pipeline owner Energy Transfer, private security contractor TigerSwan, and North Dakota law enforcement agencies.

The Intercept’s reporters have spent years attempting to uncover the real story behind the brutal crackdown on Dakota Access pipeline protesters at Standing Rock in 2016. But we’d been missing a crucial piece — until now.

New documents we’ve obtained from a grueling court case could finally shine a light on the actions of pipeline owner Energy Transfer, private security contractor TigerSwan, and North Dakota law enforcement agencies.

But it took us two years to win our case against Energy Transfer, and we’ve already spent over $100,000 in legal costs. We now have more than 50,000 files from the pipeline giant’s security contractor on hand — and getting through them will...
