This could be your last fundraising email

We know that all these fundraising requests can get annoying. We’d rather send just one and raise all the donors we need right then. But if you make a monthly donation today, you can make this the one and only fundraising email you get.

Let’s cut to the chase.

At The Intercept, we’re lucky to have a dedicated base of readers who chip in a small amount each month to keep our journalism going. But traffic and revenues are down across the news industry, and that’s a challenge, even for a nonprofit like us.

To get back on track, we’ve set an ambitious goal of adding 3,000 new monthly donors by the end of our April membership campaign. That means we’re going to have to send a lot of fundraising emails over the next 12 days.

We know that all these fundraising requests...

Can you donate $5 a month to help expose the real story behind the Dakota Access crackdown?

Standing Rock protesters were beaten, attacked with dogs, and worse. A private security firm used social media monitoring, aerial surveillance, undercover personnel, and more to build watchlists on activists.

The owner of the Dakota Access pipeline is still fighting to keep thousands of pages of records from private security firm TigerSwan from being released to The Intercept.

In a major legal victory, we’ve finally obtained over 50,000 documents that reveal tactics TigerSwan used to surveil and suppress pipeline protesters at Standing Rock in coordination with North Dakota law enforcement agencies.

But we’ve hit another wall. After more than two years of litigation, the state still has yet to release over 9,000 pages containing material that someone would apparently rather keep out of the public eye. And in some cases, the records we’ve received have been redacted for no apparent reason.

We won’t stop reporting...

Which false climate solution are you? Take our quiz and find out!

We've put together something fun for you → r1

Hey Paov!

In honour of Earth Month, we've put together a fun quiz that you can share with friends and family who might be at risk of falling for Big Oil’s lies:

Which false climate solution are you?

Quiz: Which false climate solution are you?

Take the quiz →

The more our climate movement talks about solutions — clean, renewable alternatives to fossil fuels, firmly rooted within climate justice — the more the fossil fuel industry tries to co-opt the message.

That's why they’ve shifted from denying the climate crisis to selling "quick and easy fixes" like carbon capture and emissions offsetting — promises and technologies presented by the coal, oil and gas industry as a magical way to solve the climate crisis, while their true purpose is to delay...

$200,000 in legal bills

When powerful individuals like Erik Prince drag us to court, it can blow a major hole in our budget. Our strong base of monthly donors helps ensure we can continue taking on major reporting projects without fear of retaliation.

Erik Prince, the billionaire founder of the private security firm formerly known as Blackwater, is making a third attempt at his defamation lawsuit against The Intercept.

We’ve spent over $200,000 on legal fees fighting off this action, on top of the countless hours spent on these cases by our internal legal team.

Make no mistake: We stand by our reporting on Prince 100 percent. As the founder of one of the most powerful private mercenary armies in the world, Erik Prince is absolutely worthy of journalistic inquiry.

But lawsuits like this can blow a major hole in our budget. That’s why The Intercept’s sustaining members...

Earth Month Spotlight: 350 Ghana's fight to reduce carbon emissions

r1

Hi Paov,

I am Portia Adu-Mensah, director of the group 350 Ghana Reduce our Carbon, also known as 350 GROC. Our story started with a group of seven people and one target: a coal power plant. And our climate movement in Ghana has grown into a beautiful network of over 150 members fighting for renewable energy solutions!

We started in 2013, after a massive training event that 350.org organised in Turkiye – the Global PowerShift. It was a crucial moment for the climate movement, when we needed new energy and – above all – new global connections. Around 500 people from more than 130 countries came together during a week of meetings and relationship building.

As several other new young climate leaders around the world, I came back home with my friends full of ideas and passionate to make change. We started 350 GROC to oppose Ghana's plans to build the Ekumfi Aboano power plant – a 700-megawatt (MW) project that would burn 2 million tons of coal per year and impact the health and livelihoods of thousands of people. We mobilised, protested, and talked to affected communities. And after three years of campaigning, we won! The project was cancelled, once and for...

Tell Ron DeSantis: Stop silencing students, teachers, and the press

Florida’s governor has already made headlines over his repeated attempts to censor teachers and schools. Now he wants to silence journalism by making it dramatically easier for politicians to sue reporters and win.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is doing everything in his power to stifle debate, silence and punish his critics, and cancel the free speech rights the First Amendment grants the press and public. It’s time for this to stop.

DeSantis has already made headlines over his repeated attempts to censor Florida teachers and schools, shutting down African American history classes and restricting discussion of LGBTQ+ issues in schools.

Now, DeSantis and his allies want to silence journalism by making it dramatically easier for politicians to sue reporters and win.

If DeSantis gets his way, the Florida Legislature could rewrite the state’s defamation laws and gut protections for anonymous sources, making it impossible...

Dogwood News This Week: they bought a premier

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Saturday April 15, 2023 If you had to pick the worst corporate polluter in B.C. history, it’s probably Teck. The coal mining giant used to be the biggest political donor, too. Teck gave millions to the then-ruling BC Liberals, and a little taste now and then to the NDP.

Now those donations are illegal. So instead they bought a premier, the day he retired. How much will John Horgan earn shilling for Big Coal? Whatever amount, it’s on top of his gold-plated pension worth close to $150,000 a year.

Horgan admitted he was negotiating with Teck for months while still serving as an MLA. If you’re disgusted by B.C.’s revolving door of double-dipping ex-public servants going to work for the companies they...

Ignoring cage-free promises?

PAOV — Kellogg’s has failed to keep their promises to ban cruel cages in their egg supply chains. The cramped conditions in the cages causes the hens extreme distress, as they suffer broken bones, deformities, and severe feather loss. Open Wing Alliance started their petition because they want to put an end to the cruel confinement of egg-laying hens. They don’t want these companies to get away with their horrific animal abuse. Sign the petition to join the Alliance in demanding Kellogg’s take immediate action to give these hens the freedom they deserve.

Indigenous infant mortality

PAOV, Indigenous infants in northern communities experience high rates of infant mortality and sickness. Limited access to medical resources has a devastating impact on remote communities and their most vulnerable members — infants. A group of nursing students started their petition to call attention to this urgent issue. Petition starter Ashley says, “The stakes of this issue are high. If things do not change, the lives of countless Indigenous infants will continue to be lost unnecessarily.” Sign now if you believe this inequity is unacceptable in Canada.

Help grow the climate movement this Earth Month r1

Hi Paov,

April is Earth Month, and we are challenging you to help grow the climate movement.

The world's climate scientists delivered a final warning last month. Their message is clear – we need to take bold climate action now to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis.1

Instead of listening to scientists’ warnings, political leaders continue to approve new fossil fuel projects, pushing us further away from meeting our climate targets.2

This is why we are trying something new. We need more people than ever before to take action, call their representatives, and pressure our leaders to invest in a just transition.

By acting together as one and showing the power of our numbers, we can hold governments accountable and make them invest in real, just climate solutions. But we need as many people as possible in this fight.

Paov, will you help invest in our planet by inviting three more people to join the climate movement?

Clicking the links in this email will take you straight to our challenge page and register you there, no need to fill out your details.
