Ten years ago, Australians with gas furnaces and stoves paid the same for heating fuel as British Columbians do today: about $5 per gigajoule.
Today, customers in Sydney pay more than $20 per gigajoule. If Fortis BC customers paid Australian gas prices, the average household’s monthly bill would more than double.
What happened? Over the last decade Shell and other companies built a series of massive LNG export terminals in Australia. Now domestic customers pay global prices.[1]

One of those is 24-year-old Mohana Kameli, who is currently imprisoned and has been sentenced to death. The petition to urgently stop her execution is now at over 190,000 signatures in just 4 days.

The fossil fuel industry has been lying to the public for decades, but their shamelessness never ceases to shock me.
Last week, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation revealed that Imperial Oil kept them in the dark for over 9 months as contaminated water from its Kearl tar sands mine seeped into lands where band members harvest food.1 This is just the latest outrage in the fossil fuel industry’s long history of lies, environmental racism, and human rights violations.
That’s why the litmus test for climate policy in Canada is simple: does Big Oil have a seat at the table? If they do, we can be sure that profits will come before people and the climate crisis will only worsen. But we can fight back against their lies and deceit.

Friday was the deadline for Indigenous groups to consult on the Enbridge Westcoast Connector pipeline decision. The company is requesting an emergency permit extension for a massive fracked gas line across northern B.C.
In some cases, communities were given fewer than five days to submit a response to Enbridge’s request.
Hooxi'i, a spokesperson for one Gitxsan house group that is opposing the extension, posted a video this week explaining how ridiculously tight this turnaround time is considering the gravity of the project’s impacts. Check it out.

Right now, banning new gas and coal projects is all over the news - this is a huge opportunity.
You and I know that we can’t have a safe climate and new gas and coal projects. The science just doesn’t stack up.
This year, the Albanese Government wants to pass two major reforms to our climate and environment laws - through the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act, and the Abbott-era Safeguard Mechanism.
At the moment, their reforms aren’t going to do anything to stop new coal and gas projects, and to make matters worse, the rules are rigged in favour of fossil fuel companies who can use unlimited offsets and carbon credits to continue polluting.
So that’s where you come in. The government has two shots this year to rule out new coal...
