Erik Prince, the billionaire mercenary who founded the private security firm Blackwater, is taking another run at his defamation suit against The Intercept — for the third time.

We’ve already spent over $200,000 on legal fees and costs fighting off Prince’s lawsuits — not to mention the seemingly never-ending hours by our legal department.

Sylvia,

It’s the miracle regeneration story the world barely noticed.

Over the past four decades, farmers in Niger have quietly grown 200 MILLION trees. They’ve restored ancient forests across millions of acres of dusty, drought-prone landscape while massively boosting their crop yields. And all without planting a single sapling!

Now farmers in other African countries want to repeat the miracle – and we can help.

Niger’s heroes triggered this extraordinary regeneration by reviving a traditional farming technique where tree stumps are left to sprout new growth and crops planted around them. If others follow, we could see millions upon millions more acres revived to lush forest – but first they need to know about it.

Groups like the Forum for Natural Regeneration in northern Ghana are working hard to get the word out. But they’re a tiny team. If we all chip in we can supercharge their efforts, helping...

Tell your MP to reject Big Oils demands

Members of Parliament are back in Ottawa today. Tell them to deliver a bold Just Transition Act. r1

Paov,

Members of Parliament are back in Ottawa today after more than a month off and the fate of Trudeau’s long promised Just Transition Act hangs in the balance.

Big Oil and their allies are pulling out all the stops to kill this crucial legislation. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is demanding that Trudeau drop the term “Just Transition” altogether, calling on the Prime Minister to expand fracked gas exports and conventional oil and gas jobs as part of the plan.1

Meanwhile, tar sands executives are using the fight as cover to lobby for billions in public dollars for carbon capture and other false climate solutions that protect their bottom line.2

It’s up to all of us to make sure our elected officials ignore Big Oil’s lies and listen to the people. That’s why last week thousands of people across the country used our new email tool to flood MPs’ inboxes with calls for bold and ambitious Just Transition legislation.

Paov, let’s make sure MPs get another wave of messages on their first day back in Parliament. Can you take two minutes to send an email now?

Monsanto found guilty

Picture of Paul François in his farm

Sylvia,

It was a huge victory….and then it wasn’t.

After Monsanto’s deadly pesticides caused French farmer Paul François to experience amnesia, seizures, and recurring comas, he sued. For 15 years he fought Monsanto in court and in 2012, he won! But the pesticide giant filed appeal after appeal and it took 10 YEARS for the court to set the amount of compensation.

Then, Monsanto was finally ordered to pay Paul just €11,135, after years of expensive health emergencies and nonstop legal fees.

It’s a slap in the face. And even worse, it will scare others from taking Monsanto to court. But now we can do something about it.

Paul’s still battling massive health challenges and barely has the funds to get by. Our community has stepped in to help before, covering his legal fees – now, he’s asked for our help again.

If enough of us chip in, we can help Paul get back on his feet, then set up a fund to...

Stop the defense industry from blocking this critical climate rule

Weapons contractors are pushing the Biden administration to reject a new rule that would disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and force the worst offenders to plan to reduce their climate impact.

This is a message from a partner organization of The Intercept and does not imply the editorial endorsement of The Intercept or any of its staff. Our partner organization will collect your name and email address if you participate in the action below.

The Biden administration is seeking public comment on a federal rule that would require government contractors — including the defense industry — to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and for the worst offenders to release a plan to reduce emissions in line with Paris Agreement levels.

This rule is a critical first step in holding weapons contractors accountable for their impact on the environment.

So far, many of the comments have come from industry groups in opposition to the rule....

Dogwood News This Week: it's arson

Facebook AV/VR r1 Dogwood Your place for
news and action Saturday January 28, 2023 Enbridge is asking environment minister George Heyman to issue an emergency order exempting the company from a key deadline.

Under B.C. law, permits for the Westcoast Connector Gas Transmission project expire next year if Enbridge isn’t ready to start construction. Company executives have requested an extension until 2029.

Heyman must now decide whether to approve an emergency override to the province’s Environmental Assessment Act. In other words, making an exception to the law for the largest pipeline company on the continent.

This could become the most significant decision of Heyman’s political career. Bending to Enbridge’s permit request would open the door...

Sylvia,

Peru's new regime has murdered 40 protesters in a month.

The new President, Dina Boluarte, backed by a wide range of far-right groups, including the army and the national police, has declared a state of emergency. This has given free-rein for savage attacks on unarmed demonstrators, accusing them of being ‘vandals' and ‘terrorists’ to justify it.

The Intercept is being sued by billionaire mercenary Erik Prince. Again.

Prince, founder of the private security firm Blackwater, had his first defamation lawsuit against The Intercept tossed out of court. But instead of giving up, he refiled his case in another jurisdiction, and it was dismissed again.

Now, he’s filed a third time over the exact same story.

This is the weaponization of libel law: billionaires using their deep pockets to threaten the news media and chill journalism. Prince’s legal harassment has cost The Intercept more than $200,000 in outside legal fees as well as countless and seemingly never-ending hours by our legal department.

Climate solutions

NO to "magic" fixes; YES to fossil fuel alternatives rooted in climate justice! r1

Climate solutions.

That's what our work this year is going to be all about, Paov.

But what ARE climate solutions? And what do solutions campaigns look like on a global — and local — scale? Let's dig into it!

First, let me tell you what we're not talking about when we say solutions: technological "quick fixes" that are non-scalable, unobtainable for many, and are presented by Big Oil and their allies as a magic way to solve the climate crisis without making any changes to our current unsustainable and unjust global system.

Instead, solutions to us here at 350 are about alternatives to fossil fuels, firmly rooted within the context of climate justice. We know tackling the climate crisis requires a drastic system change, away from an extractive economy rooted in exploitation, and towards a regenerative economy rooted in cooperation that benefits all people.

And in 2023 we have MASSIVE plans for campaign work that will help usher in this new era of sustainable, clean energy for all.

Don't get me wrong — our focus on solutions work might be new in terms of scale and ambition, but we are far from...

Tell your MP to fight for bold Just Transition legislation r1

Paov,

Thanks to relentless, people-powered pressure the federal government is finally getting ready to introduce the Just Transition legislation Trudeau first promised in 2019.

Big Oil is pulling out all the stops to kill the bill before the public even gets to see a draft, spreading fear and misinformation through right wing pundits and political allies like Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

But with Members of Parliament headed back to Ottawa, we have a chance to fight back.

Paov, can you help us make sure that, before Parliament resumes on Monday, MPs across the country hear from a wave of constituents about why we need them to fight for a real Just Transition plan?

Email your MP now using our quick online tool.

The forces of climate denial and delay want us to think we’re alone in this fight, but the truth is the vast majority of Canadians are concerned about the climate crisis and want our government to take faster, bolder action. Let’s make sure they hear from us directly – the stakes are too high to let Big Oil set the agenda.

Help us stand up to Big Oil and cut through the...
