body. Before delving into the news this week, we at rabble express our heartbreak and horror after yesterday’s terror attack at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. We stand in solidarity and mourning with Muslim communities around the world. Early reports pointed out that the New Zealand attacker took “inspiration” from the Quebec mosque attack two years ago. Canada must recognize its role in fostering and escalating this kind of racism and violence, and rabble remains staunch in its condemnation of white supremacy, racism, Islamophobia, and hate in all its forms.

The attack took place on the same day as the Christchurch student climate strike, which saw youth walk out of schools to demand swift, bold action on climate change from elected officials and government. But as a result of the massacre, the Christchurch climate strike was evacuated and ended early, proof that the climate movement must embrace and centre anti-racism or we will fail to deliver justice and equity. Today, hundreds of students will strike across the world. In Canada, students are also preparing for another strike on May 3. Rethinking Approaches to Climate Change

Climate change is the most visible, most threatening expression of a larger, planetary ecological crisis, the result of an economic system (capitalism) with an inherent growth and profit dynamic which ensures that the exploitation of natural resources (both renewable and non-renewable) exceeds the carrying capacity of nature. You have read the almost-daily scientific reports, each more alarming than the ones before, on the scope of the crisis. I won’t belabour the point.

Our approach must be informed by, and congruent with, the challenge that crisis poses to the way society must be organized if we are to halt and reverse the ecological catastrophe toward which we are now hurtling.

Today, I woke up to images pouring in from Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe where untold scores of death and suffering are occurring at the hands of Cyclone Idai, which the UN is calling the worst natural disaster in recorded history to occur in the Global South. Like many of us, I am still reeling from the news of 50 innocent people killed in last Friday’s terrorist attack at a Mosque in New Zealand.

It’s easy in moments like this to just blank out, to go inward, and close your heart to what seems unsolvable. That is why now more than ever we need to come together with heavy hearts and steely resolves. My brothers and sisters at Migrant Rights Network are mobilizing communities from coast to coast to #UniteAgainstRacism....

Friday was a day of immeasurable heartbreak and yet I am immensely hopeful r1

Dear friends,

After these last few days, I’m feeling a mixture of rage, grief, and resolve. The news of Friday’s horrific Mosque attack in New Zealand, which claimed 50 lives, shook me to the core. 50 lives. 50 families abruptly and irreversibly altered.

As a member of the Muslim community, the rise of Islamophobia and white supremacy over the last few years weighs heavy on my heart. Each racist attack tries to instill fear in our communities. The attacker in Christchurch, New Zealand wrote the name of the Quebec mosque shooter on his weapon and his anti-immigrant manifesto closely mirrored the vitriol spouted by vocal white supremacists, and even some politicians, in Canada.

Friday’s tragedy affirmed for me that in our fight for climate justice, we must confront this rise...
