Choking out our precious marine life and leaching toxins into our bodies — no one knows just how much unrecycled plastic waste is in our oceans, but we know where it comes from.

Grocery stores are a huge source of this plastic waste. But a new initiative from Trader Joe’s could change that.

The grocery store is reducing 1 million pounds of...

Grocery Store Workers Take on a Multinational

Andy Piascik

At precisely 1:00 Eastern time on the afternoon of April 11th, 31,000 workers at 253 Stop and Shop grocery stores throughout Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts walked off their jobs. The strike came after several months of failed negotiations in which Stop and Shop refused to retract an onerous set of demands for the elimination of premium pay for Sunday work, major cuts to pensions and dramatic increases in the amount workers would have to pay for healthcare.

The strikers are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). Truck drivers, both union and non-union, have honored the picket lines by refusing to make their deliveries, according to strikers at four picket lines in...

Adani is desperate

Adani Group is desperate to build one of the biggest coal mines in the world, right on the edge of Australia's precious Great Barrier Reef. But it's missing one key thing: insurance.

Several major insurers have already said no, but Liberty Mutual Insurance is refusing to take a stand. Tell Liberty Mutual to rule out backing Adani's disastrous mine now.

Tackling climate change together!

A,

This week was terrible for supporters of climate action -- Jason Kenney, one of the biggest supporters of tar sands corporations, was elected into the top office in Alberta.

But amidst the bad news -- we wanted to know that, through your support, SumOfUs has engaged in several corporate campaigns that make a real difference in the fight against climate change.

Late in 2018, thousands of SumOfUs members in Canada told us that climate change should be SumOfUs' biggest priority in 2019. So we listened and, already this year, put the pressure on TD, TransCanada, Alton Gas, as well as worked on creating a solutions-oriented vision -- the Green New Deal.

Here's an inside look at what happens after you signed petitions and donated to these campaigns.

You’re pressuring banks to pull the plug on fossil fuel funding.

Building the Slovenian Left:
Successes and challenges in Eastern Europe’s most promising New Left project

-------------------------------------
Luka Mesec is the coordinator for the party Levica (“The Left”) in Slovenia. The party was only founded in summer 2017 and emerged from an electoral alliance between three left-wing parties that has been represented in the Slovenian parliament since 2014. In the last parliamentary elections in summer 2018, Levica won over nine per cent of votes and has tolerated the liberal governing coalition since last fall. This makes it one of the few new left parties in Central and Eastern Europe that has met with electoral success. In conversation with the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung’s Wenke Christoph, Luka discusses the political models that helped them succeed, and what challenges and chances come...

Rethinking Ottawa’s Transit System:
A bold proposal for free transit in a city designed for cars

Julia Szwarc

During the week of February 4-10, Free Transit Ottawa challenged Ottawa’s City Councillors and Mayor to take the Transit Week Challenge. The idea was simple: To get the people who make decisions about public transit to experience the system firsthand. To the surprise of the organizers, the majority of Council chose to participate. Some, such as Shawn Menard, Laura Dudas, and Theresa Kavanagh, enthusiastically took the challenge.

Allan Hubley and Jean Cloutier, Chair and Vice Chair of the Transit Committee respectively, were initially unresponsive but eventually succumbed to the public pressure demanding that they take part. Others, such as Mayor Jim Watson and Barrhaven Councillor Jan...

We lost an election, but we will win the fight

Today we’re launching a national campaign, led by young people and millenials, to win a Green New Deal for Canada. r1

Friends,

You probably already know this, but last night, Jason Kenney was elected Premier of Alberta.

We’re not going to lie, the road ahead looks hard. Kenney won by appealing to the worst of who we are, and he will govern using our deepest fears and anxieties to serve the few and hurt the many.

But, as young Albertans, we still have hope and a steely resolve. This fall, young people and millennials could decide the federal election. For our entire lives, fossil fuel billionaires and their political allies have made decisions that undermine our right to good jobs and a liveable future. That was their time. This is our time, as young people, to lead.

Today we’re...

Yellow Vests Struggle to Reinvent Democracy:
Macron Cranks Up Propaganda and Repression

Richard Greeman

After five months of constant presence at traffic circles, toll-booths, and hazardous Saturday marches, the massive, self-organized social movement known as the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vests) has just held its second nationwide "Assembly of Assemblies." Hundreds of autonomous Yellow Vest activist groups from all over France each chose two delegates (one woman, one man) to gather in the port city of St. Nazaire for a weekend of deliberation (April 5-7).

After weeks of skirmishing with the municipal authorities, the local Yellow Vests were able to host 700 delegates at the St. Nazaire "House of the People," and the three-day series of general meetings and working groups went off without a...
