Day of Action Against Healthcare Cuts and Privatization
Ontario Health Coalition
Across Ontario, in more than one hundred hospitals and healthcare facilities, staff and patient advocates staged an "Health Action Day" on Tuesday April 23rd. In an unprecedented show of unity, more than 150,000 health professionals and workers and tens of thousands of patient advocates wore a sticker that said "Stop Health Privatization" and distributed leaflets warning about the Ford government’s radical healthcare restructuring plans. The Ford government has given itself unprecedented powers to order the privatization of virtually all healthcare services and leaked documents that show plans are underway to begin privatization of a range of healthcare services. The Coalition has vowed to fight to protect local healthcare services from cuts, privatization, and mergers.

Labour Protest in Mexico 2019: The SITUAM Strike
Richard Roman and Edur Velasco Arregui
SITUAM, Sindicato Independiente de Trabajadores de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Independent Union of Workers of the Metropolitan Autonomous University), is an industrially organized university union; that is, it represents scholars as well as both blue-collar and white-collar workers. The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) is the third largest federal university in Mexico by size and ranks second in research projects, just below UNAM, the Mexico National Autonomous University. It has 60,000 students and 8,000 employees spread over five campuses (Azcapotzalco, Iztapalapa, Xochimilco, Cuajimalpa y Lerma) in the greater Mexico City area. 75% (6000) of its 8,000 workers are members of the union.
The union has a militant tradition, as many of...

Yesterday in a ballot referendum, PEI residents opted not to change their voting system from first-past-the-post to mixed-member proportional representation (MMP). Still, a record number of Islanders thought the change in electoral system was a good idea.

A Vote For Apartheid: The End of the Two States Proposal
Katja Hermann, director of the West Asia Unit at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung in Berlin, in conversation with Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, general secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative (Mubadara), about the impact of the Israeli elections on the lives of everyday Palestinians.
Katja Hermann (KH): The preliminary results of the Israeli election show a likely victory for Benjamin Netanyahu from Likud and the right-wing coalition. What would that mean for the developments in the occupied Palestinian territories?
Mustafa Barghouti (MB): It is a very dangerous development. It means that the Israeli public has opted for extreme right wing parties that adopted a system of racism and national discrimination, the same parties that passed the Jewish Nationality Law,...

Chemicals giant Bayer is out of control -- and its CEO must step down before he does any more harm.
Bee-killing neonics. Cancer-causing glyphosate. The list goes on and on. It's got to change!
Sign our petition to Bayer's top boss, and I'll deliver it to him THIS FRIDAY at the company's annual shareholder meeting in Germany.

While the Mueller report was making its rounds, just before Easter break, another critical report was released: the U.S. International Trade Commission report on the new NAFTA—otherwise known as the Canada United States Mexico Agreement. The report is an essential part of the U.S. Congress fast track process which permits U.S. Congress to vote for the deal without adding amendments.

© John Thys/AFP/Getty Four years ago, the chances of implementing an EU directive to protect whistleblowers were slim. The political will to take action, the conventional wisdom said, just wasn’t there. Fast forward to April 2019, however, and the situation looks entirely different. An EU-wide directive to protect whistleblowers isn’t merely possible but was recently approved by the European Parliament. What happened? Civil society mobilized, rallied public opinion, and worked with the European Union to strike a blow against corruption—and show the world what it looks like when policymakers, experts, and grassroots advocates work together for change.

A,
Paul Francois has been fighting Monsanto for over a decade after being poisoned from its toxic pesticides.
Bayer-Monsanto’s bosses are terrified of him. He’s the last person they want to see at this week’s investor meeting.
The meeting is in just three days -- can you chip in to get Bayer’s most outspoken critic in front of Bayer’s own shareholders this Friday?

Bolsonaro: the First 100 days
Jörg Nowak
Near the end of the first 100 days of the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro -- the first radical-right Brazilian president since the moderated transition from military dictatorship in 1985 to a democratic regime -- the first meaningful protests, apart from some popular mocking and chants directed against him during Carnaval in February, took place since he assumed office on January 1st of this year.
The protests were occasioned by the order Bolsonaro gave on March 25th to commemorate inside army barracks and military institutions the 55th anniversary of the Brazilian military coup of 31 March, 1964. Bolsonaro stated that he does not regard the military dictatorship as a dictatorship at all but as a regime that had...

Paov:
On Friday, presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren announced a bold climate commitment: if elected, she would sign an executive order on Day One halting all fossil fuel drilling on our public lands.
Warren and her plan to Keep It In the Ground are part of a presidential race where the climate crisis has already gotten more attention than ever before. That’s already an incredible step — but still, that doesn’t mean everyone in the race has a plan that’s just and bold enough to take on the scale of the climate crisis. (Far from it.)
When it comes to an issue as urgent and enormous as climate justice, we need to hear the details.
