Happy (belated) International Workers Day :

body. rabble.ca logo Happy (belated) International Workers’ Day!

The struggle for workers’ rights and our collective movements for social, economic, racial and environmental justice continues -- but this week, we celebrated working people’s contributions to our communities and the world!

Read Duncan Cameron on the significance of May Day demonstrations of hope, solidarity, and support for collective action at a time of major distress and unrest.

Read Bill Blaikie’s book review of 1919 by The Graphic History Collective and David Lester, a new graphic novel about the general strike that rocked Winnipeg a century ago.

And we were especially thrilled to celebrate here at rabble by welcoming Zaid Noorsumar, our new labour beat reporter for 2019! We’re proud to be one of the few media outlets in Canada that prioritizes our coverage of labour stories. The labour beat reporter program was created in 2012 by rabble.ca in partnership with Unifor, Canada's largest union in the private sector, with the goal of improving understanding of the labour movement across Canada and creating a bank of labour reporting expertise among emerging journalists.

Stop the war against Brazil's indigenous peoples

Stop the war against Brazil's tribal peoples
Dear PAOV,

President Jair Bolsonaro has “declared war” on Brazil’s tribal peoples, but you can help.

Will you send him a message today and ask him to stop Brazil’s genocide?

Since taking office, Bolsonaro has:
  • Taken the government’s indigenous affairs department, FUNAI, away from the Ministry of Justice and placed it under the control of Minister Damares Alves, an evangelical preacher whose NGO is under investigation for inciting racial hatred against indigenous peoples
  • Taken the responsibility to map out indigenous territories away from FUNAI and given it to the Agriculture Ministry, which is run by anti-indigenous politicians of the agribusiness lobby
  • Drafted decrees to make it harder to protect indigenous territories, and to “monitor” indigenous peoples’ allies
  • And more…

These moves spell disaster for tribal peoples nationwide and could wipe out dozens of uncontacted tribes.

Time for the South African Government to Declare a Climate Emergency

Time for the South African Government to Declare a Climate Emergency

Co-operative and Policy Alternative Center and South African Food Sovereignty Campaign

On the 22nd of April, regions of Kwa Zulu Natal experienced heavy rainfall resulting in devastating flooding, washing away houses and claiming close to 80 lives. Currently, residents are living with relatives or in shelters where there are limited resources and not enough beds. Not too far away, in the aftermath of cyclone Idai, while residents of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are still trying to rebuild, another cyclone has hit Northern Mozambique and Southern Tanzania, cyclone Kenneth. This second cyclone comes just weeks after cyclone Idai devastated the region, killing over 1000 people and displacing about 3 million.

"We convey our condolences...

What will solve the climate crisis : in the news this week

body. rabble.ca logo The summer of 2019 will be "the summer of repeal" according to United Conservative Party leader Jason Kenney, who will be sworn in as the next premier of Alberta on April 30.

First up? The province’s carbon tax, which outgoing NDP premier Rachel Notley had implemented. Duncan Cameron points out that the gesture is an empty one. Activists, environmentalists, and economists all know that market-based solutions to climate change -- especially weak ones -- won’t solve the climate crisis, and even if they could, the federal government has a backstop in place for the growing number of provinces that have signalled opposition to consumer carbon taxes. That said, Cameron argues that Kenney’s position is a direct challenge to Trudeau, and signals his ambition to help the Conservatives defeat the Liberals this coming October.

So, what will solve the climate crisis? Listening to and learning from Indigenous stories, writes Julie Cruikshank. Understanding and reckoning with the role of neoliberal policy think tanks in blocking action on climate change. (Read Yutaka Dirks’ review of The Big Stall, a “devil in the details” investigation on this very subject.) And of course, as David Suzuki reminds us week after week, by reacting to climate breakdown by proposing solutions that match the scale of the crisis.

An Open Letter to Extinction Rebellion

An Open Letter to Extinction Rebellion

Wretched of The Earth

This letter was collaboratively written with dozens of aligned groups. As the weeks of action called by Extinction Rebellion were coming to an end, our groups came together to reflect on the narrative, strategies, tactics and demands of a reinvigorated climate movement in the UK. In this letter we articulate a foundational set of principles and demands that are rooted in justice and which we feel are crucial for the whole movement to consider as we continue constructing a response to the ‘climate emergency’.

Dear Extinction Rebellion,

The emergence of a mass movement like Extinction Rebellion (XR) is an encouraging sign that we have reached a moment of opportunity in which there is both a...

Conservative ‘Blue Wave’ Sweeps Across Canada

John Clarke

The federal system under which the Canadian state operates, places a great deal of decision making power in the hands of its provinces. While the dubiously progressive Trudeau Liberals run things federally (for the present), the provincial level of government is now dominated by the Conservatives and other hard right political parties. Ontario’s right wing Tory Premier, Doug Ford, recently greeted the electoral victory of his political co-thinkers in Alberta by declaring in the Legislature that, "We see just a blue wave going across this country from west to east."

Through clenched teeth, it is necessary to admit that he is not wrong. Six of the ten Canadian provinces are now governed by hard right political...

Bayer-Monsanto is panicking

A,

Bayer’s bosses just suffered a massive blow: this has never happened before. Last Friday Bayer gathered its investors for what it hoped would be a run of the mill annual meeting. But after a marathon 13 hours, 55.5% of Bayer’s own shareholders voted against the Bayer board.

This is the strongest sanction shareholders in German companies can give. And YOU made it happen.

This is a sensational win for you, me and all the people out there fighting against Bayer and Monsanto’s toxic pesticides, and against their disastrous mega-merger.

SumOfUs addressing Bayer's shareholders
That's me and Paul addressing the AGM from the podium.

Thanks to SumOfUs members like you chipping in, I travelled to the meeting with Paul François, and our 180,000-strong petition. Paul is a French farmer and father of two who was poisoned by Monsanto’s toxic chemicals over...

Spanish General Election 2019

Spanish General Election 2019

Iván Orosa Paleo

On April 28, a general election, for the National Congress and the Senate, was held in Spain after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called new elections. Sánchez is the leader of the social-liberal, pro-European Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSO), in power since June 2018, when he led a successful motion of confidence against the government of Mariano Rajoy’s centre-right, conservative Partido Popular (PP).

The outcome of the election casts no doubt as to who the winner is: Pedro Sánchez himself. Not only did his party win an election for the first time in 11 years but also doubled the number of deputies attained by the second-in-line, the Partido Popular, which obtained the worst result in its history. The...

Google: don't be evil

Now’s the perfect time to get Google to drop the horrifying censorship app it’s developing.

The tech giant is so keen to benefit from operating in China, it’s happy to comply with the Government’s demands to help prop up its violent authoritarian crackdown.

Can you chip in CA$94 to plaster Google’s home town with ads ahead of its big shareholder meeting?

DONATE CA$94 NOW

A,

Silence, repression, control. From the world’s biggest search engine?

In a horrifying move, Google is working with the government of China to develop a censorship app called Dragonfly.

But you’ve got a chance to push things in the right direction. In a few weeks, Google will hold their biggest meeting of the year.

As shareholders fly in to San Francisco from around the world, we want them to see ads plastered all over the city demanding Google drop Dragonfly for good.

These ads...
