Have you heard of Bill C-48?

Email your Senator today ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

Hi PAOV,

I wanted to make sure you saw my message from earlier this week. The one about the oil tanker ban.

I’ll spare you on the political details and cut straight to the point: There’s a chance oil tankers could enter the waters along the North and Central Coast of British Columbia.

For decades, coastal communities along British Columbia have fought to keep the pristine North Coast healthy and free of oil tankers. And now, there’s a bill in the Senate that could permanently protect this area from *all* oil tankers. We need to put pressure on key Senators to ignore fierce lobbying from oil executives and pass a tanker ban. Already over 3,000 people have sent a message, but we need to get to 5,000 voices!

Will you email key Canadian Senators and tell them to support Bill C-48?

Fighting back against Big Oil can seem like a daunting task. We know it won’t be easy. But we know it’s possible, because at Stand.earth, that is what we do. History has shown that people united and mobilized leads to large-scale transformative change. None of us can do everything; but all of us can do something - and that is exactly what it’s going to take. The Stand community, together with allies and following Indigenous leadership, was a key part of the effort to stop the Enbridge tar sands pipeline. Now let’s help protect the northern BC coast permanently.

Climate change as key issue in federal election : in the news this week

body. rabble.ca logo Climate change might just be turning into the key policy issue in the upcoming federal election campaign.

And that’s just the way the youth climate justice movement would have it, write Paige Gorsak and Emma Jackson, two Edmonton community organizers from Climate Justice Edmonton, this week.

“In the lead-up to the federal election, we're building the vision we wish we could have voted for a month ago: a vision that finally meets the scale of the crises we face. Because it's clear that the rise of white supremacy, growing income inequality, and the deepening climate crisis will not be resolved without visionary politics and a ground game to support it,” they write.

As our politics reporter Karl Nerenberg reports, the federal parties -- and the general public -- are still sorting out their positions. As the Conservatives attack the carbon tax, while the NDP and Greens say the Liberals should do more, the war for public opinion is now fully engaged -- and that opinion seems to be deeply divided.

The Strategic Question Revisited: Ten Theses

Panagiotis Sotiris

In 2006 Daniel Bensaïd made a very important call to reopen the debate on the ‘politico-strategic’ question. This call was made amidst a series of discussions within the European anticapitalist Left at a moment when signs of hope, such as the new wave of militancy associated with the anti-globalization movement, were combined with strategic contradictions, such as the ones that were already evident in the turn of the Lula government in Brazil toward classical social-democratic policies or in the limits of the ‘broad parties’ approach. What Bensaïd tried to do in that intervention was to remind the richness of the strategic revolutionary traditions that had dominated or even haunted the thinking of militants in the 20th century,...

Dreaming big about our future

I joined a Green New Deal town hall by the heart of the tar sands. Join on near you. r1

Dear friends,

I spent last Saturday afternoon in a community centre in Edmonton with over 250 people in my community who had gathered for our local Green New Deal town hall.

People of all ages and backgrounds filled the room to dream big about what our future could look like. We talked about the need for guaranteed good work, universal social services, and the importance of Indigenous self-determination for restoring and reclaiming the land.

The Edmonton town hall was the first of hundreds of town halls taking place from coast to coast to coast over the next few weeks. Join a town hall closest to you here.

The room on Saturday was overflowing with people...

People Music: From Mozart to Climate Change

Judith Deutsch

David Yearsley’s fine article "Disaster Music" in April 12 Counterpunch generates thoughts about what can be called People Music. At present, global political and environmental events unfold disastrously. Yearsley writes about people in the past facing the forces of natural catastrophes, framed as People versus God in Handel’s powerful music: "...earthquakes on land and beneath the ocean will presage the coming of the Lord," and Yearsley writes "The tsunami of retribution is the seal on God’s covenant."

The 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment/Age of Reason, "the best of all possible worlds," also saw vicious, now forgotten wars fought solely for power, including the Seven Years war with up to 1.4 million fatalities, the War...

Far-Right Identity Politics and the Task for the Left

Jeff Noonan

Identity politics is a key problem of our age, but the problem is typically misunderstood. Usually the left is vilified by the right for encouraging divisive politics rooted in the grievances of different minority groups. These groups are denounced for pursuing selfish agendas that harm the unity of the nation. The right then portrays itself as the guardian of the nations’ unity. In so doing, it identifies its agenda with the universal values and interests of all people.

Those who disagree with the agenda are portrayed as enemies of the people, even in the case that all the opponents added together make up a majority of "the people" in whose interests the right-wing...

The Yellow Vests of France: Six Months of Struggle

Richard Greeman

I am writing you from Montpellier, France, where I am a participant-observer in the Yellow Vest (Gilets jaunes) movement, which is still going strong after six months, despite a dearth of information in the international media.

But why should you take the time to learn more about the Yellow Vests? The answer is that France has for more than two centuries been the classic model for social innovation, and this unique, original social movement has enormous international significance. The Yellow Vests have already succeeded in shattering the capitalist myth of ‘representative democracy’ in the age of neoliberalism. Their uprising has unmasked the lies and violence of republican government, as well as the duplicity...

A,

Jeff Bezos likes making his money by mining our personal lives, undercutting our communities, and even providing technology that helps immigration authorities track families.

It's simple: Being CEO and Chair of Amazon's Board has made Bezos the richest human in history, allowing him to rule with unchecked power. But shareholders could vote to reign in his out of control empire.

A vote for an independent chair would finally give Bezos someone to...

Trump’s Misguided Policy Against Iran

Iranian Canadian Congress

Last week, the Trump administration imposed further pressure on Iran by removing two civil nuclear cooperation waivers related to purchase of enriched uranium and heavy water from Iran. By removing these two waivers the Trump administration essentially made it impossible for Tehran to continue its full compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). As a result and after a year since U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and imposition of several rounds of maximum pressure sanctions that have caused tremendous damage to the Iranian economy, Iran has decided to reduce its commitments under the JCPOA and provide a 60-day period to EU, Russia and China to help Iran against U.S. unilateral sanctions that are in...

Healthcare Funding Means Cuts are Coming

Healthcare Funding Means Cuts are Coming

Doug Allan

The group that will do the best out of the recent provincial Budget are the doctors. According to the just released Budget Estimates, OHIP funding (which goes overwhelmingly to physicians and practitioners) will go up $1.2-billion or 8 per cent compared to last year’s Estimates.

This large increase is likely due to the February 2019 interest arbitration award for doctors, an award that was praised as "fair" by Christine Elliott, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. The Financial Accountability Office estimates the award will increase OHIP payments to doctors over a billion by 2019/20 and by $1.496-billion by 2020/21. That’s roughly about a 12.5% increase in OHIP funding for doctors over four years.

A climate emergency demands more than words

A Green New Deal is the emergency level response we need to take bold climate action. r1

Friends,

Today, the House of Commons saw two separate motions calling on Canada to declare a climate change emergency. This is a big deal, since it means many of our politicians are finally waking up to see climate change as what it is -- a global crisis that demands urgent action.

But, actions speak louder than words. If, and likely when, it passes next week, this emergency declaration will still be backed up by a climate plan that misses the Paris targets and puts us on track to exceed 4ºC of global temperature rise.

That’s why a Green New Deal for Canada is so important, because a climate emergency demands an emergency level response. This weekend kicks off more than 150 town halls across the country where...
