Eternal Builder of Dreams and Hopes:
Marta Harnecker (1937 -- 2019)

"Well, friends, that’s it for today. You have to live in uncertainty and get ahead no matter what it takes. A hug as always, full of dreams and hopes." -- Marta

With these words Marta Harnecker bade farewell to all her friends in her last mail on April 24th, after giving us her last brave report on the course of her illness. In these lines lies also her personal philosophy of life: even if we live in uncertainty, our steps must never stop because it is our duty to make this world full of dreams and hopes a reality, where peoples will finally reach justice, peace and full realization.

On Friday June 14, Marta, surely against her will, had to cross the threshold from this concrete plane to that of historical immortality. Her ideas, her tireless proposals for the construction of new worlds, her unshakable faith in the capacity of people to fight against the suffocating forces of the capitalist model and to...

Empty promises from Ottawa

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

Ottawa has announced a Digital Charter to protect Canadians online with fantastic-sounding goals, such as "universal access" and "safety and security."1

The problem is that the Digital Charter doesn't mean anything without the policies to back it up — and we can't count on the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) or Parliament to follow through on those promises without serious grassroots pressure.

Teachers’ Strikes: A New Class Politics Emerging

Eric Blanc

In the spring of 2018, teachers and school staff across the United States fought back and won. By walking out for better pay and school funding, hundreds of thousands of educators etched their imprint onto the course of history. The strike wave sparked by West Virginia produced a range of major victories. It also produced some great stories. While interviewing school employees during and after the walkouts, I’d always make sure to ask about their favorite moment of the struggle so far.

Some recounted the exhilaration of personally confronting a conservative politician. Many emphasized how proud they were of having become an organizer. Others told me about the joy of their first day back at school, when students thanked and high-fived them for taking a stand. More than a few were just relieved that they could now pay the rent.

I was particularly moved by stories about small acts of support from strangers. Abby Broome, a teacher in Putnam County, West Virginia, wrote to...

Update: border laws

OpenMedia r1

Hi Paov,

Our campaign to update digital privacy rules made headlines recently when Vancouver International Airport authorities refused to allow OpenMedia ads at a nearby public transit station1.

The ads informed travelers about their privacy rights at the border, in particular the out-of-date rules that border agents use to search through the highly personal contents of phones and laptops, without a warrant.

It's incredibly concerning that YVR airport...

Belgium’s Left Breakthrough

Denis Rogatyuk

On May 27th, Europe awakened to what seemed to be like a new stage in the resurgence of the populist right and reactionary forces, and a major retreat for the radical left in the elections to the European parliament.

In Italy, the growing political hegemony of Matteo Salvini’s project was solidified with his party’s clear victory across northern and central regions of the country, while the Left effectively ceased to exist on the institutional level. In Spain, Unidas Podemos returned only 6 out of 11 MEPs, the same amount as La France Insoumise, whose lacklustre performance saw them achieve only 6.31% of the vote. Similar losses were observed for left-of-centre-left parties across Germany, Greece, Holland and the Czech Republic, while the left vote across Portugal and the Nordic countries remained stable compared to 2014.

In 2014, Syriza had been one of the big stories of the European elections and, with strong performances for Podemos in Spain and Sinn Féin in Ireland, the rise of the Nordic-Green Left bloc...

White supremacist groups can raise money internationally like never before, and the media are starting to talk about it. But it’s not “the internet” or “social media” that’s to blame -- it’s a handful of wealthy corporations, including digital payment giants like Mastercard, PayPal, and Visa.

The Green New Deal: Whither Capitalism?

The Green New Deal: Whither Capitalism?

Guney Isikara and Ying Chen

The Green New Deal resolution by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ed Markey sparked an immense amount of discussion on all layers of political discourse, national and international. The way Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders and many others phrase the problem in the broader context of social, economic, and environmental grievances caused by capitalism is crucial for setting the terms of debate and struggle. This opens up space the left can use to address such issues in a systematic way rather than being content with symptomal healing. In fact, countless contributions have already been made on theoretical and tactical grounds.

In this piece, we build on those contributions, and unpack the dynamics inherent to the capitalist system that would need to be addressed in the ongoing discussions. We also shed light on the limitations of a market-based and growth-centered approach to tackling climate destabilization, while offering other domains of political intervention such as property relations and demarketization of subsistence.

A win for youth library workers in Alberta: in the news this week

body. rabble.ca logo Ah, the power of organizing.

Following a wave of public outrage and community organizing, Edmonton Public Library dropped its plan to cut wages for youth pages.

EPL had recently announced pay cuts of between $2.30 and $2.50 per hour for youth pages last week, using the wording of the library’s collective agreement with Civic Service Union 52 as an excuse, and the United Conservative government's minimum wage reduction for students under 18 from $15 to $13 per hour as the trigger.

EPL framed the announcement as if management had no choice. But as David Climenhaga pointed out, the library could easily have maintained the youth pages’ wages. The decision, Climenhaga wrote, was “shameful for an institution whose mission is supposedly to cater to society's most vulnerable and which nurtures a public image as a major contributor to our regional community.”

EPL’s announcement yesterday that it will not move forward with the pay cuts is both a significant win for workers and representative of the possibilities of swift, targeted community organizing.

Take note, all you Albertans disillusioned with the UCP’s war on workers, our environment, and public services: this is what it takes to win!
