Wisconsin dairy farmer says supply management is not the problem, overproduction is
While the Canadian Parliament is in the process of actively ratifying the Canada United States Mexico Agreement, a U.S. dairy farmer is visiting Ottawa to tell farmers that access to Canadian markets in the new NAFTA will not solve the woes of American farmers.

Bernie Sanders Defines his Vision for Democratic Socialism

On Wednesday June 12th, 2019, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spoke about his views on democratic socialism and why it would be good for the USA in a speech at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

My friends, we are in the midst of a defining and pivotal moment for our country and our planet. And, with so many crises converging upon us simultaneously, it is easy for us to become overwhelmed or depressed -- or to even throw up our hands in resignation. But my message to you today is that if there was ever a moment in the history of our country where despair was not an option, this is that time.

If there...

Climate catastrophe

In less than three weeks the world’s most powerful leaders are gathering in Osaka for the G20. It could be a vital moment to head off climate catastrophe.

If we can get the Japanese Government, one of the world’s biggest coal backers to switch to clean energy, we could change the course of climate history.

Will you join the global call for Japan to end new coal ahead of this big meeting?

A,

In less than three weeks, Japan will for the first time host the G20. It’s a make or break moment for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. And there’s one topic he’s hoping doesn’t come up: coal.

CBC isnt taking the climate crisis seriously

We need to show mainstream media that we’re in a climate crisis r1

Friends,

On Monday, the leadership of the CBC rejected using the term “crisis” to describe climate change. Their head honcho’s reasoning? Apparently words like crisis and emergency might “sort of imply, you know, something more serious” is happening.1

When I read it, I couldn’t help but wonder -- has this CBC director actually been following the news?

Earlier this year, where I live in Ottawa, we faced “100 year floods” for the second time in three years. At the same time in Vietnam, the country where I grew up, record breaking summer heat filled up hospitals across the country. Children and elders were treated for heat stroke in record numbers, and tens of thousands of others had to work through the extreme conditions.

Climate change is a crisis, and we...

Manifestos and Socialisms for the 21st Century

Chris Wright

The title of Bhaskar Sunkara’s new book is both bold and smart. It’s eye-catching in its reference to The Communist Manifesto. It is a little surprising that apparently no previous book has had that title, since it seems so obvious. Other writers have likely been less willing to elicit the inevitable comparisons between their work and Marx and Engels’ great pamphlet. For no writer will fare well under such scrutiny.

But I don’t want to be too harsh on the founder of Jacobin, whose magazine has performed valuable services for the American left. Sunkara is not an original thinker, but he’s an effective popularizer -- and in an age of mass ignorance, there’s much to...

What's the rush?
The Trudeau government has continued to fast-track the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) through Parliament. Just this morning, it was sent for second reading – just 17 days after it was first presented.

Canada’s ‘Liberals’ Have a Disturbing Imperial Streak

Vijay Prashad

Canada’s embassy in Venezuela has just been closed. The spur for this closure is an open attempt by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to overthrow Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. Canada is one of the leaders of the Lima Group, a network of countries that came together in 2017 with the express purpose of regime change in Venezuela. Canada’s diplomatic corps has played the role of facilitator for the Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó. Trudeau and Guaidó speak regularly. Their plot against Venezuela thickens.

The Canadian government held the meeting of the Lima Group this year. It helped organize the speaking tours of Venezuelan opposition figures. But, most controversially, Canada’s ambassador to Venezuela -- Ben Rowswell --...

BREAKING: major plastics win!

A,

We have some amazing news to share: Canada will be banning single-use plastics because of SumOfUs members like you pushing hard for comprehensive plastics laws.

This is amazing progress towards stopping the plague of plastic from mega-corporations like Nestle, Coca-Cola and Tim Hortons that will now have to take responsibility for all their plastic waste.

The ban on single-use plastics in Canada couldn’t have happened without your support. Last year, thanks to 9 months of sustained pressure from SumOfUs members, every single member of parliament voted for a progressive plastics motion to tackle plastic pollution at its source, especially targeting single-use plastics.

We delivered your names to Environment Minister McKenna -- and got on national TV and radio.

When the motion finally passed in December, our petition of over 172,000 names had been mentioned many times in the House of Commons by the MP who introduced the motion and many MPs said that...
