Burger King is refusing to take bold action to address rainforest deforestation in its supply chain -- so we're pushing a powerful shareholder proposal at the corporation's AGM.
Will you help make sure it gets a strong vote? Simply ask your pension fund to support it on your behalf using our easy website. Anyone with a pension can take part:
A,
Burger King is one of the worst in fast food when it comes to deforestation. Its beef, soy and palm oil, as well as its packaging, are destroying rainforests on a ‘Whopper’ scale.
But we have a powerful way to make Burger King act.
If you have a pension,...

Between Dystopia and Democratic Socialism
Andrew Jackson
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, there was a widespread sense that liberal capitalism had triumphed in the battle of ideas, and that socialism as a plausible alternative was pretty much dead. But the many crises of contemporary capitalism -- obscene levels of economic inequality, looming ecological disaster, the rise of the racist and anti-democratic populist right, the new threats of surveillance capitalism and the surveillance state -- threaten dystopia, an unbearable future. In response, the idea of socialism has been re-discovered by a layer of activists struggling for radical change, especially young people.
But what is socialism? If we are against capitalism, what are we for? Is the socialism we have in mind a more...

We need your help to buy three federal election campaign advertisements!
Dear FVC Supporter,
The federal election is now just 113 days away.
In June 2015, Justin Trudeau made a historic promise that inspired
voters from coast to coast - to end first-past-the-post and make every vote count.
In 2017, rejecting the evidence of 88% of the experts, Trudeau told Canadians that if you disagree with his decision to break his promise, "That’s what elections are for.”
This election is our chance to rise to that challenge together.
With your generous support, we're building a campaign that will move votes, inspire hope and get electoral reform back on the table!
Will you chip in for three high-impact video ads now?
Yes, I'll help buy three video ads!Our campaign ads will focus on the key messages to drive votes for electoral reform this election:
The Broken PromiseElecting MPs who will fight for proportional representation is crucial. In a minority government, these MPs could hold the balance of power.
In our target ridings, we'll run a hard-hitting ad with emotional impact, urging voters to choose candidates we can trust on PR. With your support, we'll hire a company whose ad went viral in 2018!

body.
You'd think that with Postmedia's near media monopoly on Canadian news outlets, it'd be at least slightly easier to keep track of how the corporation's pro-pipeline bias distorts mainstream news, especially environmental coverage. So what to make of the recent editorial in the Edmonton Journal urging Alberta's UCP government to keep the province's carbon tax? Does it have anything to do with criticism Postmedia had faced, days earlier, for planned lobbying efforts to join the UCP's "war room" on pro-pipeline propaganda? David Climenhaga wonders.
In related coverage, we welcomed our new blog, "Greening the Media" by Robert Hackett. Hackett's inaugural post, "Alternative Media Versus the Exterminist Economy" argues that stronger support for independent, progressive, "alternative" media would facilitate a more balanced debate about Canada's climate policies and energy future. Because climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, David Suzuki writes, should be top headline news.
In other media news, John Miller writes that Bill C-97, which would enact measures proposed in the Liberal government's budget to create government funds for news outlets deemed "qualified" by an ostensibly independent panel, is dangerous. But Canada's publishers are lining up at the trough.
Miller, who appeared before a Senate committee examining the funding last week, writes that if the legislation fails to address crucial questions of transparency and journalistic independence, "we risk squandering what lies at the basis of all journalism -- trust."

It's 30 years since the Tiananmen Square massacre. And right now, the government of China is detaining a million people in internment camps -- just because they’re Muslim.
Yet Google wants to launch a search engine for China that would censor searches about these human rights abuses -- and help identify people searching about them.
Tell Google to cancel the project once and for all.

European Progressive Future?
Neither Yesterday’s Tsipras nor Today’s Greens
Gal Kirn
One cannot and should not turn away from the disastrous results of the recent European Parliament elections, especially considering that Leftist parties across the European Union (EU) expected to gain 38 Members of the European Parliament (MEP), achieving around 5% of the vote. The leadership and organizers of European Left needs to think thoroughly over its failure to mobilize and address working people. Even if failure is specific to the concrete context we can abstract a few very important reasons for such weak results.
Lack of a Cohesive Radical Vision Across Borders: "Just a bit more social."
Firstly, and most obviously, there is an absence of an integral European program for radical...

Green New Deal: Plan, Mood, Battlefield
Thea Riofrancos
Climate scientists are beginning to sound like radicals. The 2018 IPCC report concluded that "unprecedented changes across all aspects of society" would be needed to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In its devastating report on the dire state of the planet’s ecosystems, the UN’s panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services likewise called for, in the words of its chairperson, "fundamental, system-wide reorganization across technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values."
The first, and thus far only, U.S. policy initiative that addresses the severity of the crisis before us is the Green New Deal (GND), introduced as a congressional joint resolution this past February. The resolution proposes, among other goals, decarbonizing the economy,...
Were in a climate emergency -- lets act like it

Friends,
After tediously debating it for the past week, the Canadian House of Commons is poised to declare a climate emergency.1 If and when it’s passed, Catherine McKenna’s climate emergency motion will commit Canada to “meeting its national emissions target under the Paris Agreement” and go even further to“to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
Frankly, this confuses me. If Canada is in a climate emergency, where is the emergency response plan?
Temperatures are rising across the country, and with it, the threat of another record-breaking wildfire season. Fires have already forced evacuations in communities like High...
We released these photos 11 years ago today, but now uncontacted tribes are facing unprecedented attacks...

The photos were taken during a Brazilian government expedition in 2008.
Dear friend,
"Let them live... we must let our uncontacted relatives live." – Pire'i Awá, Brazil
Today marks 11 years since Survival released photographs of an uncontacted tribe near the Brazil/Peru border, including the one above. The images made a huge splash at the time. They brought more attention to uncontacted tribes and the threats they face than anything else before or since.
Few deny the existence of uncontacted tribes today (which shows how far we've come!), and more and more are beginning to recognize the vital role they play in protecting the environment.
But uncontacted tribes are now facing an unprecedented attack.
From Brazil to Colombia, governments have "declared war" on tribal peoples. It's the worst assault on their rights in 50 years.
Uncontacted tribes are particularly vulnerable. Previous first encounters have resulted in massacres and disease epidemics. They face genocide if their land isn’t protected.
Photos are important, not just because they serve as evidence that uncontacted tribes actually exist, but also that when their lands are protected, they thrive!

A decade after the global financial crisis, few of the initial political calculations on the trajectory of world capitalism remain intact. The assessments made by liberals and social democrats alike on the end of neoliberalism and a revival of Keynesian state intervention now seem like a bad joke. And the reading from many on the radical left that the economic slump would be met by a wave of social resistance and an opening for political rupture have fared no better in either economic analysis or political guidance. Indeed, neoliberalism has regained its pre-eminence in economic policy through re-financialization and austerity despite its ideological discredit and the endless multiplications of its contradictions.
It is more than a little alarming...
