Where is Canadas Socialist Resurgence?

Where is Canada’s Socialist Resurgence?

David Bush

Socialism is back, at least south of the border. The popularity of Bernie Sanders, the election of open socialists such as Kshama Sawant, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Ilhan Omar, the growth of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the teacher strike wave across many ‘red states’ are just some of the signs that socialism is on the rise in the United States of America.

The growth of socialism is just one side of the political polarization taking place in the United States. The surge of the far-right and the confidence Trump has empowered racists and reactionaries everywhere is extremely troubling. This dynamic of political polarization is occurring in many advanced capitalist countries such as France, the...

What is the Socialist Project?

“Oats for Breakfast is affiliated with the Socialist Project,” our listeners hear at the beginning of each episode. In this episode, we finally get into talking about what the Socialist Project is – its structure, goals, as well as the vision of socialism that guides its work. What do you want to see in a Green New Deal?

Join a town hall to help shape a made-in-Canada Green New Deal. r1

Friends,

Earlier this week, we joined more than 60 organizations and thousands of people across Canada to launch the Pact for a Green New Deal. The pact is a call from artists, Indigenous and migrant rights groups, economists, unions and young people to bring forward a bold and ambitious plan to seriously tackle climate change and inequality, and it’s the next piece of our work to win a Green New Deal for Canada.

The plan is to build this together, from the grassroots up. That’s why we need you. From May 18th to 31st, people will gather in communities across the country at local town halls to help build a shared vision for Canada’s Green New Deal. Join a Green New Deal town hall in your community -- or sign up to host...

Re. Hate plastic? Read this now

A,

We don’t have much time. In just 2 days, 186 governments will decide on an international law that could help save our oceans from plastic waste.

But corporate lobbyists are working overtime to undermine this new anti-plastic law.

Can you fight back by chipping in for digital ads that our leaders won’t be able to ignore?

Extinction Rebellion: A Cause for Hope for the Planet and Maybe for Revolution

Mike Shaughnessy

The worldwide protests organized by Extinction Rebellion (XR), have put the issue of the ecological crisis into mainstream political discourse. Non-violent actions have been carried out in more than 30 countries and within them, many more towns and cities. But it has been in the UK, the birthplace of the movement, that has seen the most spectacular actions, particularly in London. Four central London locations were held, and blockaded, three of them illegally, for almost a week, with over a 1,000 arrests being made by police.

It has astonished me that protesters held on for so long in London, but I had obviously misjudged the numbers that Extinction Rebellion...

Muslims Under Attack: Solidarity or 'Left Secularism'

Muslims Under Attack: Solidarity or ‘Left Secularism’

John Clarke

Western governments and the xenophobic far right are engaged in a veritable war on Muslims. One way in which this attack unfolds is an ongoing effort to force Muslims to embrace dominant ‘values’ and change their forms of dress or abandon religious observances. Though he was not speaking exclusively about Muslims, the infamous war criminal, Tony Blair, recently sounded off on this very theme of the obligation to ‘integrate’ and was challenged very powerfully by Aditya Chakrabortty in The Guardian.

As this vicious and escalating attack on Muslim communities unfolds, many on the left appreciate clearly its racist nature and the need for active solidarity with those on the receiving end. However, there are others...
