'This is genocide' : in the news this week

body. rabble.ca logo This week, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) released its final report titled "Reclaiming Power and Place." The report makes a total of 231 recommendations based on almost three years of hearings and over 1,000 hours of testimony from 2,300 witnesses.

But as Brent Patterson suspected, the Canadian government's response to the report's assertion -- "this is a genocide" -- has fallen far, far too short. Conservative senators -- who Dennis Gruending reports are currently obstructing C-262, a private members bill that would ensure Canadian laws are consistent with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) -- aren't the only ones standing in the way of reconciliation. Because as many have already pointed out, there can be no meaningful reconciliation without an acknowledgement of our collective history. And as the report details, Canada's history is undeniably one of genocide.

If you need further proof, read the report. Or read rabble.ca's coverage of the ongoing fight for Indigneous rights and sovereignty.

This week, we bring you Pamela Palmater on how Canada's justice system systematically and overwhelmingly denies justice to Indigenous women and girls. You can listen to Talking Radical Radio's interview with Lynn Gehl about the long fight against sex discrimination in the Indian Act.

Canada's claim to many Indigenous territories still hinges on a "surrender clause" in treaty texts. But a new look at treaty archives reminds us that Canada was not built on Indigenous surrender. Read Sarah Boivin's review of No Surrender: The Land Remains Indigenous, by Sheldon Krasowski.

One Million More Reasons to Mobilize Against Ford

Jeff Noonan

The public sector "salary restraint" legislation expected by public sector union leaders was formally introduced on June 5th (Protecting a Sustainable Public Sector for Future Generations Act, 2019). I will get to the criticism in a moment. First, I have to acknowledge the Orwellian chutzpah of this government: without a climate change plan, it cheekily appropriates the language of "sustainability" and concern for "future generations." They could have topped themselves by tipping their hat to the indigenous traditions they are also ignoring by adding "seven" in front of "generations." Perhaps the next spending restraint bill can be more inclusive.

Titles aside, the bill is not about a sustainable anything, but first and foremost a...

This could be just what we need to get bee-killing pesticides out of Kroger's food. But to pull it off I need your help.

Can you chip to save the bees from Kroger?

bee extinction

Hundreds of bee species are facing extinction, and time is running out to save them.

But you can -- by forcing one of the largest retailers in the world to cut out bee-harming pesticides.

Why Is There Now Socialism in the United States?

Why Is There Now Socialism in the United States?

Ingar Solty

Today, most people are aware that ‘socialism’ is particularly popular among American millennials. The phenomenon began when the global financial crisis hit. No matter what the design of the empirical research questions that were being asked was, a majority of millennials said they favored "socialism" over "capitalism," while the older generations, increasing with age, tended to be more pro-capitalist.

Today, many people understand why this is the case. The millennials, often falsely deemed as post-ideological or a-political, have been the worst-hit by the global financial crisis that started in 2007. A study by the Federal Reserve bank found that low-wage sector jobs accounted for a mere 21 per cent of all jobs lost...

Dear Open Society Friends,

I am thrilled to announce the launch of our new website.

We started the redesign process by asking ourselves a simple question: How could we make sure that the site reflects, in its structure and design, our dedication to the basic principles of the Open Society Foundations? We chose to focus on three goals—accessibility, transparency, and storytelling.

As the temperatures rise so will we

Add your name to the petition for a debate on climate change and a Green New Deal r1

Friends,

I have something that I want to share with you. It’s a photo of an elementary school near my house. I took is last Thursday, around noon, when smoke from wildfires in Northern Alberta – the same ones that have forced thousands of people from their homes and lands – transformed the sky into an apocalyptic orange haze.

This is not normal. Or, at least it shouldn’t be. But, as climate change deepens, it’s as if we’re facing a fifth season in this country - wildfire season.

Despite this, our politicians continue to act like business as usual is good enough. But we deserve better. That is...

A dump truck every minute

I won’t beat around the bush. Canada has a trash problem.

We generate a whopping 31 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Every minute, we dump a garbage truck full of trash into the ocean. A product we might use for 60 seconds winds up in a landfill for hundreds of years. It’s polluting our oceans, contaminating our soil, and harming our health. [1][2]

But it doesn’t have to be this way. In 2018 the Liberals promised to bring our waste down to zero with a bold new plan — one that makes sure products get recycled and reused so trash stops getting clogged up in landfills, incinerators, or the ocean — and phases out those that can’t.* [3]

Any day now, the Minister of Environment, Catherine McKenna will unveil the details of their plan. But there’s a real chance they’re going to backtrack from their initial “zero waste” promise...
