A First Victory for the Sudanese Revolution:
Will the People be Able to Override the "Orderly Transition"?

Sungur Savran

Omar al Bashir, the 30-year long dictator of Sudan, the perpetrator of the massacre of hundreds of thousands of civilians in the Darfour and South Sudan wars, the enemy of the working class and the poor of Sudan, the ally of the Muslim Brothers (the Ihwan), the collaborator of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the AKP of Turkey, has been ousted. This is a result of the power and resilience displayed by the popular movement, the revolutionary struggle that has lasted for four and a half months. Blessings to the peoples of the Middle East and Africa! We owe a debt of gratitude to the people of...

Brazil Under Bolsonaro: Social Base, Agenda and Perspectives

Ana Garcia

The rise of the far right is a worldwide phenomenon, rooted in the nefarious effects of neoliberal globalization which have pushed the world into mass unemployment and enormous inequalities. I consider it to be a late political effect of the global financial crisis that hit the world at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

It is not an easy task to explain the phenomenon of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil and to understand the groups that support him, both within and outside government. It’s difficult, for anyone, to draw a truly complete and sober analysis of what we have experienced. This essay is not based on in-depth research but on collective reflections and debates. I...

Uber-Capitalism: Platform Mobility/Mobilizing Workers

Uber-Capitalism: Platform Mobility/Mobilizing Workers

After launching almost a decade ago, the transportation network corporations Uber and Lyft rapidly expanded their operations into cities around the world, disrupting taxi unions, degrading labour rights and diminishing public transit ridership. While ‘uber-capitalism’ was incubated in the USA, the global system’s technological-core, ride-hailing corporations are emerging around the world, and workers from New York City to Jakarta are organizing to challenge their deleterious social effects.

In this session of The Capitalism Workshop, Bronwyn Frey examines some of the worker organizational strategies emerging within Indonesia’s vast informal transportation sector, where precarity is longstanding and perhaps less exceptional than in the West. Frey highlights how motorcycle taxi (ojek) drivers in the city of Bandung are collectively responding to the precarious platform labour...

A clean break

Breaking: Activists jam HSBC GM and more

Fossil Free Digest

Dear Paov,

I'm writing with you with some exciting updates from the global movement to keep fossil fuels in the ground. You probably saw some bits and pieces of the massive, March 15 global school strike for the climate. But did you know a wave of strikes has just burst forth again today – with stunning action in the UK, India, and Brazil?

There's so much happening in this movement for a world free from fossil fuels every single day. All over, local campaigns are pushing ahead to accelerate a just, renewable energy economy that works for everyone. But it's hard to keep up with all the action.

That's why we're...

Defiant Resistance: The Venezuelan Crises and the Possibility of Another World

Defiant Resistance: The Venezuelan Crises and the Possibility of Another World

Jeremiah Gaster

Bob Dylan once said, "Let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late." February 23rd, 2019, was the day that Juan Guaidó, the self-proclaimed President of Venezuela, had "authorized" "humanitarian aid" to enter Venezuela, an attempt to force the Maduro government, and thus the Venezuelan people, to their knees. There is great urgency as an ever-increasing escalation of violence is being perpetuated by those who would destroy Venezuela, including several attacks on Venezuela’s electrical grid over the last few weeks. But let me be clear: the Venezuelan poor are resilient, and any change will be on their terms. Most importantly, Venezuelan politics is collective, and there is a deep form...

billionaire CEO at Loblaw

Tell Loblaw to pay a living wage

A,

In a few short weeks, we’re heading into Loblaw annual investor meeting to tell billionaire CEO Galen Weston that Loblaw workers deserve fair wages.

These meetings are super important and Weston wants Loblaw’s to go smoothly, to uphold the “family-friendly” image. But the Loblaw CEO doesn’t seem to care about average families because he has vocally opposed minimum wage increases. Not only that, he advised shareholders last year to vote against a proposal to pay workers a fair wage.

We have a plan to change his mind by showing him that families in Canada want fair wages for Loblaw workers, not more profits lining the pockets of Weston and his cronies.

Will you join over 17,000 members like you in signing and sharing our petition?

We...

Québec Solidaire to Fight Quebec Government’s Bill 21 on Religion and the State

Richard Fidler

As it had threatened during last fall’s election campaign, the newly-elected Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government has introduced legislation to prohibit a wide range of persons "in authority," including teachers, from wearing symbols of their religious beliefs while exercising their functions. Those affected include judges, prosecutors, police, and jail guards, but also teachers, childcare providers, public transit operators, health and social service workers, municipal and administrative tribunal and board officials, etc.

Bill 21, "An Act respecting the laicity of the State," also provides that those delivering or receiving government services may lose their jobs or be denied services if they refuse to uncover their face for identity or "security"...
