Opportunities for the Montreal Urban Left

Matthew Brett

Opportunities exist for an organized urban left one year into the Projet Montréal administration’s mandate. That was the key message of a recent event organized by the Montreal Urban Left, an initiative launched in the wake of the 2017 Montreal election.

"We saw the need to provide some sort of organized left counterweight committed to holding the new municipal government’s feet to the fire with respect to its pre-electoral promises and more recent commitments in areas like social justice, the environment and municipal democracy," said Andrea Levy, a member of the Montreal Urban Left coordinating committee.

Roughly 70 people attended the Montreal Urban Left’s public forum on January 31 to assess Projet Montréal’s first year...

An Inevitable Division: The Politics and Consequences of the Labour Split

Jeremy Gilbert

It’s the changing nature of class and capital that’s caused this split -- and should shape the Left’s response to it. But discussing class meaningfully is the last media taboo.

This week’s split of several MPs from the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) comes as no surprise at all. It’s been clear since the moment of Jeremy Corbyn’s election as leader that a section of the most right-wing and/or most ambitious MPs would simply never be able to reconcile themselves either to his leadership or to a Labour Party composed mainly of his supporters. This is probably a large section: about a third of the current PLP would be a reasonable estimate. Read more: An Inevitable Division: The Politics and Consequences of the Labour Split

The Left and the U.S. Democratic Party w/ Adam Hilton

Bernie Sanders has recently announced his second bid to be the Democratic Party Presidential nomination for 2020. What does it mean for a self-proclaimed democratic socialist to enter mainstream of U.S. politics and attempt to transform one of the two business-dominated parties that control the U.S. political landscape?

How did past efforts to transform the Democratic Party fare? What are the strategic stakes for the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) in backing the Sanders campaign? Adam Hilton is one of the leading historians of past efforts of the American left to transform the Democratic Party. Our conversation with Hilton probes some of the openings and obstacles for the left in engaging the terrain of the Democratic Party to advance a progressive...

The toxic pesticide, glyphosate, in Monsanto’s Roundup is being linked to cancer and the Canadian government is doing nothing to protect us.

If the federal government won’t act, it’s up to us to pressure major retailers like Canadian Tire and Home Depot to take Roundup, and glyphosate, off the shelves for good.

NAFTA 2.0: Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps…
It appears Canada will not be ratifying the new NAFTA unless the U.S. gets rid of steel and aluminum tariffs. According to news reports, Transport Minister Marc Garneau told a National Governors Association audience in Washington Sunday that, unless the steel tariffs come off, it will be very hard to pass the new agreement before Parliament’s summer break.

"Neon Nazis"?

“Make Canada Great Again” hats. “Proud Nationalist” signs. Even a Nazi salute. These have all been seen among the ranks of “Yellow Vesters”, as part of their convoy that just arrived in Ottawa. [1]

What began with legitimate concerns over job loss in a dying oil and gas industry has become a movement plagued with racist vitriol, fighting to close the borders to immigrants. It’s now a home for the hateful far-right.

But rather than speaking out against this hate, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is normalizing it by wholeheartedly supporting the Vesters and even sharing a stage with a known white supremacist at their rally on Parliament Hill. [2]

It’s unacceptable for a leader of a major political party to give hate such a platform.

Charmin toilet paper

Guess how much recycled fiber the brand uses? ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

Charmin is one of the most recognizable toilet paper brands in the world. Its parent company, Procter & Gamble, prides itself on being ‘made from nature’. But Procter & Gamble isn’t telling you that Charmin is really flushing nature down the toilet.

This week, Stand.earth and NRDC launched a new report highlighting how single use tissue paper products—like toilet paper and paper towels—are heavily impacting primary forests. The impacts are massive — nearly half of all pulp exported from Canada goes into single-use paper products like toilet paper and paper towels. Charmin, one of the biggest toilet paper brands in the world, contains no recycled fiber. That means that Charmin and its parent company, Procter & Gamble, are significant destroyers of the Boreal forest, habitat to wildlife including the endangered Woodland caribou.

Tell Charmin to stop cutting down forests for toilet paper and tissue products.

SIGN THE PETITION

Here’s how it works: In order to make any type of paper, you need pulp. Pulp can be made from any variety of different sustainable sources, including post-consumer paper (that's paper that’s had at least one trip through a recycling box), as well as responsibly sourced plants like bamboo or even some tree plantations.

Trudeau and SNC-Lavalin: Of Hosts and Parasites

Harry Glasbeek

Every now and again the sophisticated web of myths and fantasies that hides the brutality and ugliness of capitalism is ripped away by sleazy and rapacious actors.

1. Trudeau

We are told, again and again, that we are fortunate to live in a capitalist nation that is subject to the Rule of Law. We are free to elect governments whose members may be expected to abide by many of their promises to us and to share our commitment to our foundational institutions. They will accept rulings of an independent judiciary whose processes are accessible to all and which treat all of us as equal before, under and according to our properly passed laws and...

Their Internationalism and Ours

Paul O’Connell

As the Brexit deadline nears with no deal in sight, we bring this contribution from Dr. Paul O’Connell on the vexed question of internationalism and the nation-state. Arguing that the state "has not been transcended, but rather augmented to better serve the interests of capital," he puts forward a vision of socialist internationalism that begins with the assertion and restoration of democracy and working-class power at a national level.

An oft heard refrain in sections of the European left holds that while the EU is flawed, it is important to remain in and reform it, to advance the cause of internationalism. This argument is usually run alongside derisory dismissals of some caricatured notion of ‘socialism in one country’, and uncritical...

Breaking: Another rubber stamp for the TransMountain pipeline

The National Energy Board just recommended building the TransMountain pipeline r1

Friends,

This morning, the National Energy Board -- an institution we both know is broken -- once again renewed its support for the TransMountain pipeline.

This isn’t surprising, but frankly, I’m sick of our government and institutions saying they are acting in our best interest, but being so clearly in the pocket of Big Oil. That’s why, with an election on the horizon this fall, I’m excited to move our fight beyond pipelines and towards a massive re-orientation of our economy and society. I’m ready to build power for a Green New Deal for Canada. Are you?

A Green New Deal for Canada means implementing transformative climate policies that transition us off fossil fuels in line with science and justice by making massive investments in renewable energy and public transportation,...

McDonalds chicken scandal

A,

McDonald’s chickens come from farms described as ‘hell on earth’.

Bred to grow too big, too fast they can barely walk from the weight of their own oversized bodies. Stranded on the floor, their legs sizzle from the fumes of each others’ waste.

Why? To make McNuggets and McChicken sandwiches.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. A leading group of animal charities has...
