Tell Saputo and McCains to clean up their act

Food processors like Saputo and McCains are responsible for the most food waste in Canada.

It’s time these food giants to clean up their act and sign the food waste pledge.

Sign the petition

A,

Canada wastes so much food that you might as well throw a quarter of your groceries away when you leave the supermarket. By far the worst culprits aren’t ordinary shoppers like us, but huge food processors like McCain’s and Saputo, the dairy giant behind Cracker Barrel and Neilson milk.

Their wasteful practices mean that...

What a Teachers’ Movement Can Look Like

Lois Weiner

The victory Los Angeles teachers and their union, United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), won in their contract fight with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has the potential to change the world, as the Chicago Teachers Union did in its landmark 2012 strike. Their path-breaking struggles are reverberating in the latest wave of walkouts and strike votes spreading across the nation’s school systems -- and the school year is barely half-over.

Los Angeles teachers rode the tide created by the teacher walkouts in "red states," which taught labour the power of direct action to win demands from the GOP’s elected handmaidens to wealthy elites. By consciously using community organizing and reinvigorating the union’s internal...

‘Progressive’ Trudeau Government Attacks Venezuela

John Clarke

Anyone who still entertains any illusions in the ‘progressive’ nature of the Trudeau Government of Canada, would have been shocked to witness the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland, assembling a collection of regional representatives of the Washington Consensus in Ottawa, on February 4, to further the coup plot against Venezuela. The so called Lima Group that she brought together dutifully issued a statement calling for the “national armed forces of Venezuela to demonstrate their loyalty to the interim president in his constitutional functions as their commander in chief.”

Despite the progressive pretensions of the Liberal Government in Ottawa and the ill deserved reputation that Canada has for ‘peacekeeping’ and for being a moderating influence in international...

Mexico’s Energy Transformation?

James Neimeister

When fuel prices shot up dramatically two years ago, ordinary Mexicans took to the streets. The gasolinazo, as the abrupt surge in prices was called, was a gut-punch to Mexicans’ strained finances, triggering blockades, occupations, and ransacking at gas stations across the country. A year and a half later, in July 2018, voters rejected the right-wing PRI and PAN parties behind Mexico’s energy reforms, electing Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a storied figure on the Mexican left.

Despite the central importance of energy policy to his election, there has been relatively little discussion of what a López Obrador government might mean in terms of climate policy. López Obrador (also known by his initials: AMLO) ran on a hodgepodge of environmental...

The Gilets Jaunes Revolt Shaking France

Stefan Kipfer and Karen Wirsig

In 1934, the political situation in France was tense and uncertain. The year began with a mobilization of royalist and fascist militias (on February 6) that were followed immediately (on February 9 and 12) by a response from the Communist and Socialist wings of the workers movement. As Norbert Guterman and Henri Lefebvre reported, "all these men are ready for the concrete liberation a revolution would bring -- and perhaps also, unfortunately, the mystique and brutal mythology of the fascists" (1999 [1936], 143, trans. SK). When these lines were written in the mid-1930s, France was experiencing a rising tide of grassroots anti-fascist politics culminating in the strike waves of...

Conversion: Alternatives for the GM Shutdown

Peter Stoett and Scott Acquanno

GM’s announcement that it will halt production at its award-winning assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario was hardly a surprise, though it still managed to stun the federal and Ontario governments. This was not the first time large-scale layoffs affected the GM workforce in Oshawa. Many former workers have completely dropped out of the labour market while others have re-entered the workforce in lower paying, less standardized or non-unionized service sector jobs after the retraining programs promised to them proved insufficient and underfunded.

Some felt betrayed by a company that had received generous assistance from the Canadian government in the past. Many observers saw it as an inevitable, if painful, symptom of a long-term...

A Short Guide for Canadian Anti-Imperialists on the Current Crisis in Venezuela

Laura Avalos and Susan Spronk

With the Lima Group meeting in Ottawa, on February 4 the news of the crisis in Venezuela has hit Canadian headlines. This short guide intends to provide some key talking points for progressives who might not be ready to comment on what is happening in Venezuela, but are critical of the interventionist stance of the Canadian government.

1) Canada should not follow the USA’s foreign policy position on Venezuela, particularly given its history of self-interested interference in the region.

Trump has appointed controversial U.S. diplomat Elliott Abrams as special envoy for Venezuela. Abrams was convicted for misleading Congress in Iran-Contra affair, and was linked to the...
