Let this wave of protests be a reminder...

Thank you for standing with Brazil's indigenous peoples on this historic day.

Hi everyone,

It’s not often we see global protests. But today is a historic day. The biggest ever international protest for indigenous rights has been taking place.

In cities around the world, from São Paulo to New York, Berlin to Montreal, protesters have come out in force to demand an end to anti-indigenous policies in Brazil.

A heartfelt thank you to all the Survival supporters taking to the streets and social media today in solidarity with Brazil’s indigenous peoples.

Since Jair Bolsonaro took office, Brazilian Indians have experienced a dramatic increase in violent attacks and land invasions.

The Crisis in Sri Lanka

Kanishka Goonewardena

"In the name of God, go!" Rarely have these words of Oliver Cromwell been recycled with such farce and frequency as during Sri Lanka’s recent political crisis, not least by parliamentarians addressing rivals. As far as crises go, however, it was a remarkably peaceful affair outside of parliament and unrelated to any kind of revolution. Everyday life continued as usual even in Sri Lanka’s largest city Colombo despite extra-bold newspaper headlines, which were greeted in the distant North by "near silence."

Yet there was no shortage of drama and spectacle. In the early days of turmoil, parents were advised to cover their children’s eyes when footage appeared on TV from parliament, where proceedings were disrupted by MPs...

Zimbabwe: Capitalist Crisis + Ultra-Neoliberal Policy = "Mugabesque" Authoritarianism

Patrick Bond

Once again, a formidable burst of state brutality against Zimbabwe’s citizenry has left at least a dozen corpses, scores of serious injuries, mass arrests, Internet suspension and a furious citizenry. The 14-17 January nationwide protests were called by trade unions against an unprecedented fuel price hike, leading to repression reminiscent of former leader Robert Mugabe’s iron fist.

Most of the country’s economy ground to a halt. For more than a week, the cities remained ghost towns, as army troops continued attacking even ordinary civilians who are desperate to earn a living in what often seems to be the country’s main occupation these days: street vending of cheap imported commodities. A national strike of...

Talking About Power

Ingar Solty interviewed by Jerko Bakotin

For all its economic might, Germany’s main centrist parties are in crisis. If barely a decade ago the Christian Democrats (CDU) and Social Democrats (SPD) conquered over three-quarters of the vote, in polling today they represent under half of the electorate. But as the main parties lose their hold over Germans, the Left does not seem well-placed to take advantage. The Die Linke party formed by postcommunists and a split from the SPD in 2007 has secured a respectable vote nationally and at the regional level, becoming the country’s fourth-largest political force, and yet has consistently failed to rise above 10 per cent of the vote. Indeed, the real upstarts in German politics today are the...

Wet’suwet’en solidarity actions continue from coast to coast to coast
On January 7, 2019 militarized RCMP invaded and occupied unceded Wet'suwet'en territories to try to forcibly clear a path for a fracked gas pipeline owned by Coastal Gaslink (TransCanada), arresting 14 Indigenous land defenders. The temporary agreement that was reached has since been breached as the company has illegally destroyed traplines of two different clans of the Wet'suwet'en Nation.
