Two weeks to end palm oil subsidies

A,
Palm oil production destroys rainforests and kills orangutans, yet Europe is using more palm oil than ever, burning half of it in cars and buses. That’s because it’s subsidised as a “green” fuel -- even though the deforestation it causes makes it three times worse for the climate than regular diesel.
We have a chance to change that, but we only have 2 weeks. On February 1, the EU Commission has to decide whether to cut the palm oil subsidies off. It’s up to top commission officials to make it happen, but they’re being lobbied hard by the palm oil lobby.
We're doing a final push! Can you please help cover the Twitter feeds of top commissioners to convince them to take palm oil out of Europe's fuel tanks?

India General Strike 2019
Jamie Woodcock
On the 8-9th of January, 150 million workers went on strike in India. The strike was organized by ten different trade unions, covering transport, banks, financial services, government company, power, steel, car and other factory workers. It follows the protests by farm workers, who are joining in the action. Jamie Woodcock was in Bangalore and attended the demonstration on the first day of the strike.
In Bangalore the strike was strong, shutting down transportation across the city. On the 8th of January, the unions called for a demonstration outside the town hall. There was the visible presence of transport workers (mainly bus drivers), factory workers (particularly aerospace), and bank workers, who joined a lively picket from across the...

Urge Canadian banks to not finance the destruction of the Arctic
As soon as this upcoming summer, the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge could be going to the highest bidder for oil drilling. The Gwich’in call the coastal plain “Iizhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit” or “the sacred place where life begins.” It’s the calving and nursery grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd, a key food source for the Gwich’in people.
Donald Trump is pushing this destructive project through. That’s why we have to stop banks and investors from funding drilling projects that could wreck the Arctic Refuge. This includes pressuring the Big Five Canadian banks.
TAKE ACTION NOWEvery year the Porcupine Caribou Herd undertakes a 4,000 kilometer long migration across Yukon, Alaska, and the Northwest Territories, before giving birth to their calves on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge. Because of the coastal plain’s relative lack of predators and its abundance of food for the caribou, the Refuge is a safe haven for their newborn calves. Oil drilling or any industrial activity would be devastating to caribou calves.

A New Day for Mexican Workers
David Bacon
NAFTA had been in effect for just a few months when Ruben Ruiz got a job at the Itapsa factory in Mexico City in the summer of 1994. Itapsa made auto brakes for Echlin, a U.S. manufacturer later bought out by the huge Dana Aftermarket Group. In the factory, asbestos dust from brake parts coated machines and people alike. Ruiz had hardly begun his first shift when a machine malfunctioned, cutting four fingers from the hand of the man operating it.
It seemed clear to Ruiz that things were very wrong, so he went to a meeting to talk about organizing a union. When Itapsa managers got wind of the effort, they began firing the organizers....

Trade Wars: NAFTA, China and the World Market
Global imbalances are once again in the news on a daily basis, as the American current account grows, with trade surpluses in other zones and capital and credit flows growing in tandem. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump slaps tariffs on imports from many of the US’s traditional allies in North America and Europe, condemning their leaders for unfair treatment. As well, Trump imposes high tariffs on Chinese products and other restrictions on trade relations with China. China responds in turn with tariffs on U.S. goods, and redoubles its efforts to forge a new trade zone with its Belt and Road Initiative and a new trade push in Africa and Latin America. And after Trump declares NAFTA to be...

Sugarcane and Steelworkers’ Strikes in Iran
International Alliance in Support of Workers in Iran
In the past two months, two major strikes by the workers of "Iran National Steel Industrial Group" (INSIG) in the city of Ahvaz and "Haft Tapeh Cane Sugar Agro-Industrial Company" in Shush, took place simultaneously.
Workers in both industries have been fighting against privatization of their respective companies and unpaid wages. In addition, workers have been calling for the removal of corrupt management and domination of what steelworkers have called "The Mafia" in their industries. Workers are also protesting against the government’s "free market" policies, which have led to austerity measures, massive corruption and ever-increasing job insecurity. Workers have denounced the inexplicable practices of the "Iranian Privatization Organization," an entity...

A Tale of Two Toilets: Profiting from Necessity?
Judith Deutsch
Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities famously opens with the lines "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…" Reflecting extremes in wealth and well-being, a number of current publications mirror Dickens: Andrew Levine's "A Tale of Two Cities," Mike Davis’ "A Tale of Two Wildfires," James McAuley's "A Tale of Two Killings," Juan Gonzalez’ Reclaiming Gotham: Bill de Blasio and the Movement to End America's Tale of Two Cities. Nowhere is "a tale of two" more fitting than the world of toilets. Indoor plumbing arrived in the U.S. in the 1840s. Dr. John Snow's treatise on sewage-contaminated...
