Dear Paov,
Delayed gratification is not easy for me — I want to win the climate fight right now, instead of watching sadly as forests burn and houses flood.
But watching my wife, Sue, teach our dog Birke this new trick (you have to watch the video) reminded me that patience is a virtue. Not too much — the climate crisis is a timed test — but enough not to walk away in frustration at political inaction or the slowness of social change.
Because despite the year’s manifold frustrations, there are some good signs. In fact, it feels to me like we’re finally having a moment on climate change: the terrible wildfires in British Columbia,...

Socialism at the Forefront of Numsa's New Political Party
A socialist South Africa led by the working class -- this is the vision of the newly registered political party, the Socialist Revolutionary Workers’ Party (SRWP). At the party's two-day long pre-launch conference, which began on Friday at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, over a thousand delegates from different parts of the country congregated to discuss, among other things, what it means to promote socialism in South Africa.
According to SRWP acting spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, this was the party's first national gathering since a decision was taken to establish the organization.
"This conference is an opportunity for us to get a sense of where we are in terms of the work that we have done...

Dear A,
I want to share something that really worries me.
Millions of people like you take action with SumOfUs to hold big corporations accountable, like signing petitions, tweeting at CEOs or turning up to protests.
But, A, only 0.7% of SumOfUs members donate regularly to keep it all going. That’s not enough if we want to take on the world’s biggest corporate bullies.
In 2019, we’re facing some huge challenges: we need to protect our bees from pesticide giants, push big companies to stop using dirty palm oil, and much, much more. For all our 2019 plans to come together, we need to bring on 2,000 new monthly donors contributing a few coins each by 31 December.
So I am asking you: if you think the work we do together is important and you can afford it,...

The RCMP has everything it needs to enforce an injunction against Unist'ot'en camp -- an Indigenous-led reclamation and permanent camp in BC that’s blocking the path of several pipelines.
Send a message to Federal and Provincial Ministers to call on the RCMP and TransCanada to respect the rights of unceded Indigenous territory.
A,
Last Friday, TransCanada Coastal Gas Link, a massive oil company, was granted an injunction to remove the gate at Unist'ot'en camp and start construction on its fracked gas pipeline despite the...

Cuts, Cuts, Cuts: Ontario’s New Education Funding Guide:
A First Step Toward Privatization?
Dudley Paul
It is a miserable Season’s Greetings card to Ontarians; a lump of coal called the Education Funding Guide 2019-20. It’s setting us up for cuts to education in the order of 4 cents on the dollar -- or about $1-billion out of a $24-billion education budget. Education Minister Lisa Thompson, prefaces this 5-page disaster with the unbelievable comment that "educating our children is the most important job in the world." In the next breath she outlines a possible 4 per cent cut and then asks us how we’d like to do it.
If it’s possible to be clearer about her lack of regard for educating our children, just as...

We have some good news and some bad news
Dear friend
The clock is ticking – there are just two weeks to go until Jair Bolsonaro becomes Brazil’s next President. (He’s the far-right politician who’s made a whole series of racist, anti-indigenous statements.)
We have some good news and some bad news:
The good news is that last week, Brazil launched a ground operation to evict illegal ranchers from the uncontacted Kawahiva tribe’s territory! This fantastic progress would not have happened without your pressure.
We’re now pushing for the next steps in the land protection process to happen as quickly as possible –because if they don’t, there’s a good chance they won’t happen at all.
The bad news is that Bolsonaro is planning to weaken FUNAI, the government’s Indian affairs department.
He wants to take it away from the Ministry of Justice and place it under the control of Damares Alves, an evangelical preacher under investigation for inciting racial hatred against indigenous peoples.
This move would be disastrous for Brazil’s tribal peoples and their lands. And it could spell extinction for dozens of uncontacted tribes.

A Populist Moment? Learning from Corbyn, Sanders, Mélenchon and Iglesias in Germany
Mario Candeias
The period of interregnum has not yet ended. In the tenth year of the crisis, the European Union has reached a relative, albeit low, level of economic stability. In many countries, however, upheavals continue to reshape the political field. Even in Germany, the era of stability has come to an end, with plenty of shifts in the political landscape. The radical right currently sets the agenda, and a lack of social mobilization and the fragmentation of the "mosaic Left" indicates a populist gap on the Left that calls for address. The question remains: how to collect or connect the different forces, or, more specifically, how can populist momentum carry forward a...

Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario have been in power for almost six months now. We knew that Ford’s agenda for Ontario would be a dangerous step backwards, that he would undo many of the progressive policies we’ve fought hard for over many years, but even we are stunned by how aggressive and undemocratic the Progressive Conservatives have been so far—and...

Brazil: Fascism on the Verge of Power?
Jörg Nowak
The extreme right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro won the Brazilian presidential elections on 28 October in the second round with a margin of 11 million votes (all in all about 58 million or 55 per cent) against the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT) Fernando Haddad with 47 million votes, representing 45 per cent of the vote. Another 40 million Brazilians did not vote or cast empty ballots instead. What is to be expected from the incoming presidency that starts on January 1, 2019? And why did voters turn to the radical right after 13 years of governments led by presidents from the PT plus two years of an interim neoliberal government that came to power via...

A,
Every day 25 orangutans are lost in Borneo. These gentle, intelligent creatures are no match for the bulldozers and chainsaws that flatten their homes to make way for palm oil plantations.
There's one thing fuelling this destruction: the companies driving demand for cheap palm oil. We have a plan to stop them. But we need your help!
Can you chip in a few coins to take on the palm oil industry and save the orangutans?
