Remembering the Metro Days of Action
As Ontario faces a new round of neoliberal attacks on workers, the poor, racialized, and other marginalized communities it is important to draw lessons from past struggles.
For two days in October 1996, Toronto was shut down with massive protests against the harsh new policies of Mike Harris’ Conservative government. That was one of eleven Days of Action across Ontario in those years. As Ontario faces shockingly similar initiatives from the Doug Ford government in 2018, it’s time to reflect on what was tried and what was accomplished in confronting a neoliberal agenda two decades ago.
Moderated by Maryanna Lewyckyj. Presentations by:

Orangutans need trees to live. But profit-hungry companies are tearing down and burning their rainforest homes to grow palm oil trees instead. Orangutans are shot dead when they try to explore these new plantations.
In just the last 16 years, we lost 150,000 orangutans on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. That’s over half of the orangutan population living on...

The Political Revolution Goes to Work
Jane Slaughter
The term "political revolution" is an odd one. Bernie Sanders never said that voting for him or building his campaign would overthrow capitalism (the traditional meaning of "revolution" in the socialist movement). The idea was radical but vague. It was rightly inspirational while what was actually asked of us was within the sphere of voting and elections, and in the Democratic Party at that.
Let’s define "political revolution" very broadly as left electoral campaigns that raise transitional demands and seek to enfranchise the disenfranchised. Bernie’s campaign, as well as those of followers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, called for radical reforms that the U.S. system could grant -- Medicare for All, free public college -- but which...

When Open Society Foundations Founder and Chair George Soros first visited the country, while it was still under the apartheid system, South Africa was the epitome of a closed society. And although it’s true that the South Africa of today still faces many challenges, it is impossible to deny the stunning changes it has experienced over the past generation. Since its founding, the Open Society Foundation for South Africa has been honored to support all those who have worked so hard to move the country forward—and the Foundation looks forward to spending 25 more years supporting South Africa as it fulfills its boundless promise.

Friends,
Last Friday, I joined a few dozen others on a cold Montreal morning to greet Justin Trudeau and Canada’s Premiers with a simple message: Canada needs its own Green New Deal.
I wish I could tell you that they got the message, but from everything I’ve heard about their meeting, we still have a lot of work to do. Instead of the kind of bold, visionary action we’re calling for in the Good Work Guarantee that thousands of people signed to support – an end to fossil fuel expansion,...

This is huge. FGV or “Felda” has been found guilty of human trafficking and forced labour on its plantations. 160,000 SumOfUs members like you helped expose FGV, Malaysia’s biggest palm oil producer, in 2015 -- and these sanctions are proof that the industry is finally...
