For Richer, For Poorer: Re-Imagining and Reclaiming the Family for the Left

Anne Steckner

Family affects us all. Many associate the family with (emotional) security, devotion, intimacy and being needed. When all else fails, the family is there, the most important area of life. Yet reality isn’t so simple. In everyday life, family often means squaring the circle, having to manage life by the clock under constant time pressure. A wide range of needs must be attended to, though often exhaustion and excessive work demands gain the upper hand. Time and again, relationships founder on the inflated image of the family and romantic love. For some, the family represents a prison, a place of suffering or violence – the most dangerous place for women and...

What do Doug Ford, Rachel Notley and Justin Trudeau have in Common?

r1

Dear friends,

In just over a week, Justin Trudeau will meet with Premiers from all across Canada. A few of them are digging in their heels to fight against federal climate policies and at least one person in that room might even be a full fledged climate denier (hint, he’s from Ontario).

But one thing they all have in common is that they’re failing us on climate change.

That’s why today, we’re calling on Justin Trudeau and Canada's Premiers to step up and support a bold new vision: a climate plan that commits to phasing out fossil fuels, grants every single impacted worker a good job in the transition and builds a 100% renewable energy economy that respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Sign the petition calling for a climate action plan that comes with a good work guarantee.

This...

Solidarity with Migrants’ Caravan

Statement of the Canadian Delegation in Support and Solidarity with Migrants’ Caravan

Mexico City, November 7, 2018 — Members of the International Migrants’ Alliance (IMA) met from November 5 to 7, 2018 for its 4th General Assembly. We, the Canadian delegation of IMA, made up of grassroots organizations of migrants, refugees and their allies, express our solidarity with the members of the caravan of migrant people, especially women and children who arrived in México City in the last few days. This massive exodus comes mainly from Honduras, as well as from other Central American countries.

We are deeply concerned about the dangers facing the members of this caravan, as well as all migrants in Latin America. Kidnappings, extortions, disappearances, sexual...

Help us build a big, bold movement

This #GivingTuesday, your donation will be matched. r1

Dear Paov,

With every passing day, the Trudeau government is trying to bulldoze ahead as fast as possible with its broken review of the TransMountain pipeline.

That’s exactly why we’re working every single day to build the big, bold movement we need to break the toxic hold that the fossil fuel industry has over Canada. But going to need your help to put our plans into action. This #GivingTuesday, will you make a $5 donation to 350.org? Your donation will be matched up to $20,000!

The movement you’ll support is so much bigger than fighting one pipeline at a time. Our strategy is to build a bold movement that unites all the major fossil fuel fights across the country.

It’s already clear how much we can accomplish when we stand together. After people powered resistance, Kinder Morgan decided to abandon its TransMountain pipeline. Even though Justin...

Dow Chemical wants to increase use of pesticide shown to hurt bees.

A dangerous new bee-killing pesticide, Sulfoxaflor, can reduce bumblebee colonies by half. But now that neonic pesticides are banned in Europe, Dow Chemical is preparing to cash in with this toxic “replacement”.

Sulfoxaflor should be on the banned list too. Will you sign the petition to save the bees from this latest killer threat?
