Palm oil victory!

This is big. Orangutans, the rainforest and palm oil workers have new protections.

A,

BREAKING: we won on palm oil -- again! SumOfUs members like you just persuaded the global palm oil regulator, the RSPO, to strengthen its rules against deforestation and worker exploitation.

That’s another win for orangutans, our rainforests and palm oil workers!

Thousands of you emailed and tweeted at the RSPO, ahead of a crucial vote last week at the palm oil event of the year -- held in the heart of orangutan territory, in Malaysian Borneo. Together, we persuaded the RSPO’s membership of civil society organizations, palm oil traders, growers, and big brands, to improve the industry standards. That’s a huge win for people power.

However, without proper enforcement, these new ‘Principles & Criteria’ won’t be worth more than the paper they're printed on....

Airbnb

Thanks to you, Airbnb has stopped listing illegally occupied Palestinian homes on the West Bank.

A,

Great News! Yesterday people all over the world celebrated an important victory for Palestinian human rights.

After years of sustained pressure, tech giant Airbnb finally agreed to remove all of its listings located in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. This move deals a huge blow to the settlement activity that displaces, destroys, and steals Palestinian land.

Not only is settlement expansion wrong, it is against international law and in violation of the Geneva Conventions. And until yesterday, Airbnb, a 38 billion dollar corporation, continued to profit off these illegal listings. This victory sends a strong message we will hold all corporations accountable for attempting to profit off of human rights abuses in Palestine.

You are one of the people that...

Climate considerations stopped another pipeline?

Today's the last day to submit your comment for the TransMountain pipeline review. r1

Dear friends,

As you probably heard, we got some good news recently. On Thursday, November 8th, a US Judge ordered TransCanada to cease all construction activities on the Keystone XL pipeline, quashing Donald Trump’s presidential permit for the massive tar sands pipeline due to inadequate considerations for climate change. This is a massive delay and a huge milestone for the movement behind this moment.

For over a decade, Indigenous leaders, farmers and ranchers, and their allies around the world have been fighting to stop this pipeline. Despite every obstacle thrown our way, the movement to keep fossil fuels in the ground has kept this pipeline and many more from being built. Let’s take inspiration from their work in our fight against the TransMountain pipeline.

Tomorrow’s the last day to submit our comments to...

Dewayne Johnson

A jury has ruled that Monsanto's toxic weedkiller, glyphosate, caused a man's terminal cancer.

This could be a landmark precedent with the potential to do huge damage to Bayer & Monsanto. Even ultimately ridding the world of glyphosate for good, but it’s going to be a long fight.

Please will you chip in monthly to take on the chemical giants?

Hard Question, No Answers

Jeff Noonan

I knew it would be coming: an essay in The Bullet trumpeting the "breakthrough" of Québec Solidaire (QS) in the recent Québec election. I agree: it was a breakthrough. QS increased its seat totals from 3 to 10, and won 16 per cent of the popular vote (over 600,000 votes). Unfortunately, their right-wing rivals, the Coalition Avenir Québec, won 7 times as many seats and almost three times as many votes. Québec thus joins Ontario in having dumped a Liberal for a right-wing populist party. The two largest Canadian provinces join the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia in electing parties with openly anti-immigrant platforms.

The question that the QS results...

The Monsanto Papers scandal has just hit Canada.

Why did Health Canada use studies written by Monsanto to approve glyphosate?

Breaking: Health Canada used fraudulent studies written by Monsanto to renew the registration for Monsanto’s own toxic glyphosate for 15 years.

Call on Health Canada to immediately reopen the registration of glyphosate now, without Monsanto’s falsified studies.

Sign the Petition

A,

Health Canada used fraudulent studies written by Monsanto employees to renew the registration for Monsanto’s carcinogenic pesticide, glyphosate, for 15 years.

Monsanto hired researchers to sign scientific studies written by its own employees to minimize the risks associated with glyphosate, the ingredient...
