Mining Conflicts Multiply: Extractivism Critics Gather in Johannesburg
Patrick Bond
The World Social Forum’s "Thematic Forum on Mining and Extractivism" convened from November 12-15 here in Johannesburg, on the heels of the Southern Africa People’s Tribunal on Transnational Corporations. Hundreds of radical activists from community groups and social movements, grounded in concrete local grievances, met to agree on their systemic critique.
This is the appropriate moment -- here and across the world -- for the grassroots to tackle mining, oil and gas. In spite of South Africa’s resurgent state-corporate alliance since the February ascent of former mining magnate Cyril Ramaphosa, world economic chaos is deterring investment.
Mining houses cite not just South Africa’s black-empowerment ownership requirements, but a host of structural problems: weak...

How a just peace in Palestine-Israel can save our planet
The planet we call home is in trouble. Human survival depends on strong and determined global action by governments across the world. States act according to international law and work within world governing structures. Both of these have been lamed, almost mortally wounded by 70 years of Israel’s intransigence and impunity toward Palestinians and the illegal occupation of their land.
The only way to save human life on the planet is to rescue international law and global governance from near irrelevance. The best place to begin is a true and just peace in Israel-Palestine. Insisting on applying international law and an end to coddling and protecting Israel’s actions in world forums will bring back leadership and...

Hallway Medicine: It Can Be Fixed
Doug Allan and Michael Hurley
This brief is part of a cross province campaign begun before the summer election by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions / CUPE to alert the public to the dangers to hospital and healthcare posed by a Doug Ford Progressive Conservative government. After the election, TD released a report suggesting the government to make even deeper cuts to real program spending -- $23.9-billion annually by 2022/23. CUPE, along with other unions, is working closely with the Ontario Health Coalition (OHC) and the hundreds of community groups affiliated to it. The OHC Assembly in November debated a new Action Plan, which calls on the community -- labour alliance to build a rally at Queen’s...

An important day for children around the world r33
Hi everyone,
As an ally of tribal peoples, you’ve probably already heard about the horrific and dehumanizing education systems that the Canadian, American and Australian governments devised in order to forcibly assimilate indigenous peoples.
Maybe you’ve watched the heartbreaking film, “Rabbit Proof Fence,” or read about Canada’s residential school system which was designed “to kill the Indian in the child.”
You might not be aware that right now there are hundreds of thousands of tribal children attending similar schools around the world. At Survival, we call them “factory schools” because of the systematic and abusive “reprogramming” that happens there. But really, there are no words to describe the horrors children endure – physical and sexual abuse are alarmingly common, and children are stripped of their identities and banned from speaking their languages.
