Migrant Caravans Challenge the Continent’s Governments
Dan La Botz
Central American migrants, both desperate and courageous, have thrust themselves into the center of Mexican and U.S. politics with their demand for refuge and asylum. As the head of the NGO Pueblos Sin Fronteras told a reporter, "This isn’t just a caravan, it’s an exodus created by hunger and death."
The thousands of migrants organized in caravans and walking north from Central America, through Mexico, and to the United States -- some 3,000 miles -- have raised a challenge to the governments and to the people of North America. Driven by poverty and violence, their long march is an implicit critique of the Central American governments that have failed to protect them and have made...

Dear friends,
Earlier today, you received an email that was meant to go to our supporters in Indonesia. This was sent to you by mistake and we wanted to say sorry for any confusion.
People are fighting for climate justice all around the world. Today, we told you about climate impacts that might be further away from home for you. But wherever you are, you can push all our governments to hear the people's demands and act to stop climate breakdown. We will be joining thousands of people to make sure those demands are heard at the next UN climate conference later this year.
Thank you for all of your work in support of the climate movement.
Monica and the 350.org team
P.S. While you're here, have you thought of joining a local group near you to keep...

Hi Paov,
Climate change is the biggest crisis of our time–and its happening now. Just recently, we hear that flood and landslides happened in Bandung and Tasikmalaya, West Java. Now, we also hear similar disaster intensifying its impacts affecting millions of people around the world, the health of our planet, and driving species' extinction. It disproportionately affects the people and communities globally who have contributed the least to creating this emergency.
Next month, at COP24, governments will lay out the rules to implement the Paris Agreement. We need to them to keep warming below 1.5°C. We need real commitments to keep fossil fuels in the ground and urgently transition towards 100% renewable energy for all. These are the People’s Demands – nothing less will do.
Tell the Government of Indonesia representatives you stand for the People’s Demands here.
Because this...

Tailings Dam Spills at Mount Polley and Mariana:
Chronicles of Disasters Foretold
Judith Marshall
On August 4, 2014, the dam holding toxic waste from the Mount Polley copper and gold mine in the Cariboo region of British Columbia (BC) collapsed. More than 24 million cubic metres of metals-laden fine sand and water were spilled from the breached dam, creating the largest environmental disaster in Canada’s mining history. The spill flooded Polley Lake and flowed into Hazeltine Creek and Quesnel Lake. Land, water systems and salmon habitat were destroyed. The Northern Secwepemc people, on whose territory the mine was located, lost land, livelihoods and traditional uses integrally linked to the land.
On November 5, 2015, the Fundão tailings dam, an even larger reservoir of mine...
