Ford Takes on Bill 148: But There is Resistance

Chloe Rockarts and Gerard Di Trolio

When the Tories were elected to govern Ontario this past June, it was a day that many were both dreading and expecting.

The Ontario government has finally unveiled their legislation that would repeal the gains workers made from Bill 148. In an emergency action coordinated by the $15 and Fairness campaign, 500 workers were out in the streets of Toronto yesterday evening, to send a message to Premier Ford that the actions he and his party have taken to repeal Bill 148 has betrayed workers across the province.

The Bill freezes the minimum wage at $14 and only indexes it to inflation beginning in October 2020.

The...

Doug Ford

This is a reckless attach on the climate

Doug Ford was so eager to tear down climate protections that he plowed right over Ontarian’s rights.

But a powerful lawsuit could finally hold him to account now.

Can you chip in CA$91 today to protect our climate from Ford’s reckless regime?

Donate CA$91 today

A,

One of Doug Ford’s first acts as Premier was to illegally scrap Ontario’s climate plan -- without putting any other climate plan in place. This reckless attack on the climate could prevent Canada from meeting its Paris climate targets.

We can not wait...

Understanding the Rise of the Radical Right

Understanding the Rise of the Radical Right

Mario Candeias

It is the time of monsters. The organic crisis of the old neoliberal project has also brought forth the rise of a new radical right. Yet these monsters are quite different from one another: we have strong men like Trump, Kurz and Macron -- political entrepreneurs shaping a new authoritarianism from positions of governance. Theresa May and Boris Johnson act quite similar, with less success, but unlike the others they are established representatives of authoritarian elite right-wing conservatism. They all share an anti-establishment discourse, although they have strong capital factions backing them.

The authoritarian-nationalistic regimes in Poland and Hungary (or Turkey) are distinct, and are in turn different from the radical right like the Front...

Plastics inside you

Scientists say there's plastic in our poop! It’s polluting our oceans, our communities -- and our bodies. But without public pressure now, some governments will still go easy on the plastics industry.

Tell all European governments to support the EU’s ambitious Single-Use Plastics law, and make it stronger still. Tough rules on plastic pollution in Europe could save marine life all over the globe.

Take Action!

Sign the Petition

A,

An overwhelming majority in the European Parliament just voted today to strengthen the EU's plan to cut plastic pollution. Tough rules on single-use plastic items in Europe could save marine life all over the...

In and Against the State

Leo Panitch and Sam Gindin

Just a few years ago, it would have seemed most unlikely that developments in the British Labour Party would attract widespread international attention among those looking for the renewal of socialist possibilities in the 21st century. That this is the case today is a credit to the enthusiasm and creativity of a new generation of socialist activists in Britain and the political perseverance and dedication of a coterie of long-committed socialists around Jeremy Corbyn. Yet if the election of a Corbyn government in Britain is not to be quickly followed by profound disappointment on the left internationally, as was the case with Syriza in Greece, British realities need to be kept in sober perspective.

Québec Solidaire Prepares to Confront a New Government of Austerity and Social and Ethnic Polarization

Québec Solidaire Prepares to Confront a New Government of Austerity and Social and Ethnic Polarization

Richard Fidler

Québec solidaire’s 10 members of the National Assembly, elected October 1, took their oath of office on October 17 in two parts.

The oath of allegiance to the Queen, required by the British North America Act (now the Constitution Act) in order to take their seats in the Assembly, was conducted behind closed doors, presided over by the secretary of the Assembly.

In a public ceremony held in the former chamber of the Legislative Council (the appointed upper house abolished in the 1960s) the 10 MNAs pledged their "real" loyalty "to the people of Quebec." Then, to the acclaim of many supporters of Quebec sovereignty, both...

Canadas climate policies must line up with science

It took me 30 minutes to deliver the IPCC report to my MP. Will you deliver one to yours? r1

Dear Paov,

Today, exactly one year before the next federal election, I delivered the IPCC’s catastrophic climate change report to my Member of Parliament, Jenny Kwan.

I did it because it’s clearer than ever that strong words on climate change aren’t enough, we need our politicians to take ambitious action. This Wednesday, over 1000 people will take action to make sure hundreds of MP across Canada receive a copy of this report and visit from their constituents. Will your MP be one of them?

Sign up to deliver the catastrophic climate report to your MP on Wednesday.

This morning, I headed to Jenny Kwan’s office in East Vancouver and delivered the IPCC report along with a clear ask for Kwan to champion and support...
