Steps Forward in Free Access to Public Transport
Lukasz Lugowski
Thirty years of neoliberal domination, culminating in the economic crisis that began in 2008, have resulted in the introduction of charges for public service throughout Europe, particularly for education and health services. But this is not the case in all public services. In recent years there has been a renaissance of free public transport, particularly in Eastern Europe. While in Hasselt, Belgium or Colomiers, France -- cities that were until recently symbols of the success of free public transport in Western Europe -- tickets have been reintroduced as part of the neoliberal trend to charge for services, in the East candidates for local power compete with each other in many cities on the basis of...

We have just a few days left to call on Canada to take real action to save the bees now.
Will you send a comment to Health Canada to impose the ban on bee-killing pesticides immediately?
A,
Thanks to you, we’ve secured a win on banning two major bee-killing neonic pesticides in Canada.
But the bad news is the bans won’t come into effect for three to five years. There is no reason to wait this long -- the EU enacted its ban less than a year after deciding to ban all neonics.
Luckily, we have a chance to tell Health Canada to speed up the process....

Peacemaking in the age of Trump and Netanyahu
Palestinian human rights lawyer, Jonathan Kuttab, examines the present configuration of regional forces and international personalities leading to current sorry outlook for justice and peace for Palestine and Israel. He is concerned by what he sees as the continued erosion of human rights for all Palestinians under Israel’s control and the rightward shift of Israeli society and state. Yet he is still hopeful that the present forces can be undone and situation reversed with our help.
Introduced by Robert Massoud. Moderated by Karen Rodman.
Jonathan Kuttab is a leading human rights lawyer. After a graduating with his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from Virgina Law School, and practicing a couple...

WWF is violating international law
URGENT ACTION
Dear PAOV,
The Baka fear for their future.
They are about to see the forests they’ve lived in and protected for generations stolen from them. It’s a land grab, driven by Western organizations, just like colonial times. If it goes ahead, their lives will be destroyed.
They’re being evicted to make way for the creation of a new national park in the Congo Basin, Messok Dja. It’s backed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). And it's completely illegal.
It’s time to decolonize conservation.

For a Liberal Populism?
Blake Stewart
Over thirty years have passed since Chantal Mouffe and her late partner Ernesto Laclau developed the political philosophy of ‘Post-Marxism’ in their seminal text Hegemony and Socialist Strategy (1985). It was here where Mouffe and Laclau first challenged what they perceived as the vulgar and economistic forms class analysis found within Marxian political theory. The Post-Marxist field of social theory they introduced was an anti-orthodox Marxian philosophy that would be more inclusive to contemporary struggles which they argue cannot be discussed using only the language of class.
In her most recent text For a Left Populism (2018) Mouffe reflects on the current ‘populist moment’ in the West; providing a tool-kit for progressive social forces. Mouffe’s brand of populism...

Dear FVC Supporter,
We recently learned that the President and CEO of the Urban Development Institute, a lobby group for property developers, sent a letter to their hundreds of member organizations urging a vote for first-past-the-post. The letter parroted the misleading claims about proportional representation being put forth by the official NO campaign and the BC Liberal Party. You can read the letter here:

Fair Vote Canada BC has responded with an open letter to the Urban Development Institute, sent with a press release, which you will find below.
You can also share the link to our letter at:

Challenges for Cuba’s New Constitution
Tom Hansen
Cuba is writing a new constitution, part of a lengthy process of political change that can be traced to the 6th Congress of the Communist Party in 2011. The Congress approved a document known as the "lineamientos," a detailed domestic policy blueprint that opened certain sectors of the economy to market dynamics and "change[d] the structure of employment, reduce[d] inflated payrolls and increase[d] work in the non-state sector." The plan was to close State enterprises if they don’t generate a profit, with the private sector absorbing laid-off workers. To date less than a quarter of the "lineamientos" have been implemented, reflecting a slow and careful process of change.
In 2016, the 7th Party Congress approved the "conceptualizacion,"...
