...Canada's plastic solution

A,
In just two weeks, Canada could pass the motion that would kick-start real action on plastic pollution. This week, MP Gord Johns started the debate in the House of Commons to pass M-151, the motion that provides a comprehensive framework for a national strategy to address Canada's plastic debris.
Almost 120,000 SumOfUs members like you signed the petition calling on Canada to pass M-151. In the next couple of weeks, we're going to step up our campaign to make sure the House votes in favour of M-151.
Will you help us get to 150,000 signatures supporting Canada's plastic solution?
The motion would not be voted on in the House without you. I was overwhelmed by the support I received when I personally delivered a hundred thousand of your names to the Environment Minister in Ottawa and it was featured on national TV and radio.
Now we need to make the...

Stop Land Grabs:
Declaration of the Social Movements: Ten Peoples’ Principles Against Land Grabs, Evictions and Neoliberalism
Frans Ari Prasetyo and People’s Alliance Against Eviction
"Let a New World be born in Bandung for a genuine land reform, not land grabs!" — Bandung-Indonesia, September 24, 2018.
The world order of the 21st century has changed, as colonialism and imperialism mutate into many faces. Neoliberalism becomes new foundation for neo-colonialism, neo-imperialism, and authoritarianism with a populist mask. These all continue the practices of colonialism and exploitation for corporate and commercial interests against the rights of the people. Land grabbing, land evictions and exclusion of local people from their sources of livelihood, and inclusion of the poor in exploitative works are a result.
These neocolonial...

Class War Conservatism and Resistance to the Doug Ford Tories
Jeff Shantz
The Fordist Conservative government in Ontario presents a pressing challenge to politics as usual and raises the stakes for working class resistance. Almost immediately upon taking office Doug Ford and his Tory regime have gone on an offensive targeting diverse segments of the working class. In their aggressive actions they have shown themselves to be unabashed proponents of a class war conservatism in the mold of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Mike Harris, if in a particularly crass version.
Well, sometimes you get the counsel you need, when you need it. So it is that I found myself reading Ralph Miliband’s old article "Class War Conservatism" right as Doug Ford was elected...

Trump wants millions of people to prove their gender with invasive genetic testing.
Add your name to demand that genetic testing companies like Ancestry and 23andMe refuse to throw privacy rights and anti-discrimination policies in the garbage.
A,
The Trump administration wants to create a registry of genitals.
Trump plans to define sex as “either male or female, unchangeable, based on genitals visible at birth.”
But there are many people who don’t fit neatly into two sexes based on genitalia or chromosomes or...

Dear friends,
We are less than a year away from the next federal election and the clock is ticking for politicians to bring our climate policy in line with what scientists and people living on the frontlines of climate change keep telling us is necessary.
In the midst of climate crisis we need a bold vision and an ambitious plan. That’s exactly why I was one of hundreds of people across the country who took action last week to deliver the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s landmark climate change report to my MP’s office.
If you didn’t get a chance to visit your MP’s office, maybe you can consider sending an email to your MP instead. Take 2 minutes to email your MP on our simple one click form....

Challenging the Market with Collective Solutions
Gordon Peters
For a short time very recently the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on climate change hit the headlines and everyone -- not just those committed to reducing it -- was reminded of the accelerating costs to the planet and continuing livelihoods of carrying on the burning of fossil fuels. The report did not pull punches and said we had until 2030 to take steps well beyond any yet enshrined in policies to prevent the impending 3 degree rise this century, with the devastating impact on millions of lives, on cities, on species survival entailed.
Yet in our high consumption and celebrity news culture, that message again recedes and being able to do business...

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 13 October 2018
Transit Justice in the Inner Suburbs
Public transit is essential to accessing Toronto’s social and cultural life, including necessary things like getting groceries or going to work. Yet working class communities suffer from inadequate and expensive, transit service. Different plans for transit reform have been floated promising better and more efficient service. What should Toronto’s working class communities make of these proposals? What are the key issues related to transit in the city, and the possibilities to mobilize for change?

A jury ruled Monsanto's toxic weedkiller, glyphosate, caused a man's terminal cancer -- and this week a judge upheld the verdict.
Now, Monsanto is about to appeal the verdict to avoid paying compensation and stop other cancer victims from coming forward. We can’t let Monsanto undo this landmark victory -- so we’re fighting back.
Will you chip into support the man taking on Monsanto, Dewayne Johnson, and bring the Bayer and Monsanto to justice?

Brazil: The Collapse of Democracy?
Alfredo Saad-Filho
Brazil will elect its new President on 28 October 2018. Since the judicial-parliamentary coup that removed elected President Dilma Rousseff, of the Workers’ Party (PT), the new administration (led by her former Vice-President, Michel Temer) has advanced its agenda of neoliberal ‘reforms’. The economic crisis has continued unabated, and the campaign for the destruction of the PT has intensified, leading to the imprisonment of former President and PT founder Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Finally, the Armed Forces have increasingly intervened in political life, particularly through the occupation of peripheral areas in Rio de Janeiro. Their close articulation with the Judiciary is encapsulated in the appointment of General Fernando Azevedo e Silva as ‘advisor’ to the President of...
