Praise the Workers, Not Amazon

Jonathan Rosenblum

"Power concedes nothing without a demand," abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass declared 161 years ago.

Last week saw that truth on broad display as Amazon, facing growing political and organizing pressure, announced it was setting a minimum wage of $15/hour for its U.S. workforce and also raising wages in England.

The company’s declaration followed months of mounting bad publicity for Amazon. U.S. workers have been speaking out in greater numbers about the punishing pace of work, high injury rates, and a plantation mentality on the warehouse floor. A British journalist went undercover at Amazon and wrote a book describing workers forced to pee in bottles and extraordinarily high rates of depression. (Ironically, Hired: Six Months Undercover in...

The Toronto Overdose Prevention Society w/ Sarah Ovens

Episode 7: Canada is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic. In 2016 there were 3,005 opioid-related deaths in Canada. In 2017 the figure jumped to 3,996. The Canadian government’s response has been inadequate, which has prompted a wave of activism.

We talk to Sarah Ovens, a social worker and an organizer with the Toronto Overdose Prevention Society (TOPS), about why the opioid crisis is taking place and what her organization is doing to try to address it.

BREAKING: Emergency debate on climate happening now

After hearing from hundreds of us, Canada’s Speaker of the House approved our request r1

Friends,

I have some great news. Earlier today, after hearing from hundreds of us, Canada’s Speaker of the House approved a request from three Members of Parliament – Elizabeth May, Guy Caron and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith – to hold an emergency debate on last week’s critical Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on limiting climate change to 1.5ºC. And the debate is happening now! Click here to tune in.

I want to say thank you. This happened because of the thousands of people who signed last week’s petition to federal party leaders calling for this debate, and the hundreds of people who picked up the phone today and called the speaker, urging him to allow it.

Now that we have a debate, it’s time to hear what our politicians are going...

Call the House Speaker right now r1

Friends,

This morning we received some big news. After hearing from thousands of people all across Canada, Guy Caron, the New Democratic Party’s House leader, Green Party leader Elizabeth May, and Liberal Party MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, wrote to the Speaker of the House to request an emergency House of Commons debate on last week’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 1.5ºC climate change report.

Like I said, this is big news. But, we still need your help. It’s up to the Speaker of the House – the Honourable Geoff Regan – to decide if this debate happens. Will you take a minute to call the Speaker, urging him to accept the request for this debate? We’ve made it easy with a system that will dial the call for you.

We only have a few hours to make it clear that...

It's been a busy month at Survival...
Hi everyone,

We've been thinking a lot about conservation as the International Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade happens in London this month.

When people talk about how to tackle poaching, we tend to hear about the need for more powerful weapons, arming more guards, "shoot on sight" policies, and so on.

But for tribal peoples, this militarization of conservation leads to violence, human rights abuses and even extrajudicial killing. They’re accused of poaching when they hunt to feed their families, or simply for collecting medicinal plants. They’re illegally evicted from their homes, beaten when they try to return, and in extreme cases are killed by wildlife guards.

The Age of Unreason:
The Knowledge-Practice Relation and its Political Significance

Raju Das

In many contemporary societies, there is a typical distrust of knowledge claims that are backed by reason and evidence. Correspondingly, there is a popular penchant for knowledge claims that have no basis in reason or evidence. It is as if post-modernism is being put into practice in popular circles.

Beginning with some empirical evidence from India concerning the existence of knowledge claims emanating from conservative forces that make no sense, and subjecting them to a critique on the basis of a series of counter-questions, I discuss the internal relation between knowledge (theoretical and empirical) and practice (political and epistemological). In part by building on Lenin and Plato, I argue for the...
