The Lesson of Brazil

Pierre Beaudet

The catastrophe -- expected and foreseeable -- has happened. This immense country, with its 200 million inhabitants, is now in darkness. At best, it will take a decade or two to emerge.

It is of course very early to predict what will happen, but the election of the fascist Jair Bolsonaro raises two possibilities. The "optimists," if one can put it that way, think that a kind of Colombian-style regime will emerge: authoritarian, militarized, using targeted repression against certain sectors of the popular movement with the consent if not support of a vast sector of the middle and popular classes. In Colombia, under Álvaro Uribe’s rule, the state was reinforced and restabilized, benefiting from the militarist excesses of...

The Google Walkout:
An International Working-Class Movement

Dan La Botz

Thousands of Google employees throughout the United States and around the world walked off their jobs on November 1, "to protest sexual harassment, misconduct, lack of transparency, and a workplace that doesn’t work for everyone." Beginning in Singapore and working its way around the globe the movement closed Google offices from Mountain View, California, in Boulder and New York, as well as in London, Dublin, Zurich and Berlin.

Signs on placards or on the walls read "Don’t Be Evil," or "Times Up Tech." One woman wrote, "My outrage won’t fit on this sign." Nearly everywhere workers held short rallies where women read the movement’s demands. Looking at the many photos and videos of the...

Corbynism and the Labour Party

Corbynism and the Labour Party

Openings, Obstacles, Possibilities for British Socialism

The leadership of the UK Labour Party by Jeremy Corbyn continues to enjoy enormous popularity across the UK. This even despite continual attacks from the corporate press, the Conservative Party, and opposition from within the Parliamentary Labour Party itself. Indeed, under Corbyn’s leadership, the Labour Party has once again become a mass party, with a larger membership than any other social democratic party across Europe. Moreover, grassroots activism and direct participation in the party by members has grown to levels not seen in recent history, especially since the party’s centralization under the “Third Way” leadership of Tony Blair. This active engagement has helped Corbyn and the party’s socialist left capture key institutional positions, and to...

Brazil: Quilombo Campo Grande suffers threats from Fascism

MST (Landless Rural Workers' Movement)

We, the MST families of Southern MG, of Quilombo Campo Grande, denounce fascist action against our 20-year struggle.

Here, families, after so many years, already have electrical energy infrastructure, houses and produce a great diversity of agroecological production, such as coffee, many varieties of corn, beans, vegetables, fruits, organic seeds livestock, chickens, pigs.

These families generate, with their work, food sovereignty, not only for those who produce and live on the land, but for thousands of people who have access to a healthy and quality food, without poison.

The camps also generate income distribution. The land, which was only of one owner, now brings dignity to nearly 450 families,...
