Public Ownership for Energy Democracy:
Opportunities for Publicly-run Energy Utilities to Revolutionize Generation and the Grid
Johanna Bozuwa
Energy democracy -- a new idea from the ranks of community organizers, labour, and renewable energy advocates who see our current energy system as broken and destructive -- seeks to take on the political and economic change needed to tackle the energy transition holistically. A democratic energy system powered by renewables (and free of fossil fuels) would distribute wealth, power, and decision-making equitably. But, practically speaking: How can we redesign our energy system with energy democracy at its core?
A first step is to stop exploiting fossil fuel reserves, as Quantitative Easing for the Planet proposes. Another imperative is to shift ownership of the generation, transportation,...

Participatory Socialist Economics: The Vision of British Labour
Hilary Wainwright
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell can usually barely breathe a word about nationalisation without setting off a media frenzy, so it’s strange that his most interesting comments yet on the subject passed with so little comment. Speaking in February about the Labour Party’s proposed new economics, McDonnell said: "We should not try to recreate the nationalised industries of the past … We cannot be nostalgic for a model whose management was often too distant, too bureaucratic."
Instead, he said, a new kind of public ownership would be based on the principle that "nobody knows better how to run these industries than those who spend their lives with them."

Take action to stop seismic testing in the Arctic Refuge
Dear PAOV,
I wanted to make sure that you saw my previous email. This winter, a company called SAExploration will conduct a seismic test in the Arctic Refuge to determine how much oil is under the protected area. This highly invasive and destructive process will permanently scar the landscape, leaving Big Oil's imprint in the Arctic Refuge forever.

A new study has found that Timbits, KD, Cheerios, Quaker Oats, and Ritz Crackers contain Monsanto Roundup’s cancer-causing ingredient, glyphosate.
Tell Health Canada and to keep cancerous ingredients out of our food.
A,
The key ingredient in Monsanto's cancer-causing Roundup is pervasive in our children’s food. A just-released study found cancerous glyphosate in common foods like Timbits, KD, Cheerios, Ritz Crackers, and Quaker Oatmeal.
The message is getting around that glyphosate is dangerous. Just this August, a California jury ordered Monsanto to pay...

Toronto Purchase Revisited:
Indigenous History in Toronto
Toronto has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, including the Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and most recently the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. Today, it remains home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island.
It goes without saying that most of Toronto’s Indigenous inhabitants – like its other inhabitants – are, for a sizable portion of their lives, workers. And many are aware that the processes that gave rise to Toronto as a workers’ city – immigration, capitalist development, liberalization – went hand in hand with the dispossession of Indigenous peoples. In spite of this, we seldom bring together these two deeply intertwined histories of Indigenous people and labour. This forum attempts to bridge this...

Fish are being mislabelled all over Canada, sometimes substituting tuna with a fish dubbed the laxative of the sea.
Tell the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to protect our health and stop seafood fraud.
A,
When you buy white tuna or butterfish in the grocery store, you could actually be purchasing a fish dubbed “the laxative of the sea” for its devastating effects on the digestive system including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Escolar could make you sick for days -- and you'd have absolutely no way of knowing which fish you'd actually bought.
Almost a quarter of all fish in from Costco, Loblaw's, Safeway and Sobey's and all...
12,000 year-old forest, or a coal mine?

Dear Paov,
German coal giant RWE wants to cut down a 12,000 year old forest to strip away earth and dig for lignite - the dirtiest fossil fuel. They could start clearing trees in just two weeks. But not without a fight.
Activists have been protecting the Hambach forest with their presence and their bodies. Now, as the situation escalates and police carry out evictions to make way for the loggers, the people defending Hambi have called for international solidarity. Show your support, sign the letter in solidarity with people defending Hambi!
So let’s send the land defenders on the frontlines a powerful message of hope and support. Let’s help them stay strong, and stay safe: the more eyes focused on the Hambi struggle, the more the authorities might hesitate to use violence against the peaceful resistance.
For 6 years, a group...

Accountable Capitalism or Democratic Socialism?
Stephen Maher
Elizabeth Warren’s "Accountable Capitalism Act" promises the most radical shift in economic power since the New Deal. It contains four essential components, including campaign finance regulations, an attempt to limit corporate "short-termism" that has supposedly accompanied the rise of finance, and a requirement that corporations serve the "public benefit" rather than just shareholders. Most substantial, however, is the proposal that employees play an enlarged role in electing corporate boards of directors. As Seth Ackerman argued in calling for the left to "take Elizabeth Warren literally, but not seriously," the Act would in some respects be a step toward greater democratic control of the economy.
Yet even aside from Warren’s proud declaration that "I am a capitalist," there...

So were faxing to fix the pipeline review?

Dear friend,
We ended this summer with a huge victory: the Federal Court of Appeal affirmed that Justin Trudeau’s approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline ignored Indigenous peoples and left out key environmental considerations. The court quashed Trudeau’s approval of the TransMountain expansion and sent the project’s assessment for a a major do-over.
Yesterday, the government kicked off that do-over, with the start of a 22 week redo of the NEB review. But first, the NEB is accepting public comments on what to consider in their new review. And, they’ve set a deadline of October 3rd for those comments to come in.
That means we have less than a week to raise our voices and demand a proper review this time -- one that considers the project’s...

Dear FVC Supporter,
On Saturday, we launched a Proportional Representation Fact Checker Site - two of Canada's top electoral reform experts objectively evaluating the claims made by both sides in BC's referendum.
Within hours the site had slowed down and by Sunday it was failing to load at all.
It has now been confirmed by our technical specialist that the Fact Check site was attacked by someone trying to shut us down by overwhelming the site with over 80,000 page requests.
What FACTS about the claims made by the NO campaign does someone not want BC voters to see?
