Why Canadian Prisoners Are Participating in the U.S. Prison Strike
Jordan House
Prisoners are once again on strike. Since August 21, prisoners have been engaging in various forms of protest in at least ten states. And prisoners in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, have also joined the protest wave, issuing their own statement and set of demands.
While the strike has provoked heavy-handed responses by some prison administrations, it is too early to tell if the strike will be able to force concessions. The U.S. prison system is often characterized as uniquely unjust -- which it admittedly is in key ways. So, why have Canadian prisoners risked participating in a U.S.-based strike movement?
In the words of the prisoners themselves, "The organizers of this...

Dear FVC Supporter,
It’s do or die over the next two months and Fair Vote Canada needs all hands on deck to win the referendum on proportional representation.
If ever you wanted to help our movement with a few hours of your time or some of your hard-earned money, this is the time!
The upcoming referendum provides a once in a lifetime opportunity and represents our best chance so far of bringing electoral reform to our country. It’s a mail-in ballot and citizens will have from Oct. 22 to Nov. 30 to vote.
Our chances of winning this referendum are good thanks to support by both the NDP and the Green Party, a fair ballot question and a readiness for change on the part of the electorate. However, referendums are hard to win due to the built-in status quo bias, and the fearmongering and misinformation tactics of opponents. We predict the vote will be close.
Fair Vote Canada does not have the resources to reach everyone in a large province like BC but we CAN make a difference—and that difference could be what wins the referendum.
We've been running a strong media campaign, including op eds, letters and earned media through events. We have printed and are distributing over 130,000 flyers at info tables and door-to-door.
With more donations and volunteers, we could double that.

Dear friend,
No one knows this man’s name.
He’s lived entirely on his own for 22 years, in a tiny patch of the Brazilian Amazon, surrounded by the loggers and ranchers who wiped out all the other members of his family and community.
He’s so traumatized, he hides when people approach, refusing all human contact. He has no one to talk to.
Please help us stop this happening again →
The unimaginable pain and grief he suffered are being repeated across the globe. Elsewhere in the Amazon live the last four members of another tribe, the Akuntsû. They too have seen everyone dear to them die in a genocide that the world has barely noticed.

A,
JPMorgan Chase is still investing in mining corporations that dump toxic mining waste into the oceans -- despite the fact that its competitors, Citigroup and Standard Chartered, have stepped up to make commitments to protect our oceans from toxic mine tailings dumping.
Experts are gathering at the United Nations in New York City to create a historic binding treaty on oceans -- and just blocks away is JPMorgan’s main office, where executives are dragging their heels. Now is the time to call on JPMorgan Chase to take action.

Trudeau Government Acknowledges Nazi Genocide Against Roma
Suzanne Weiss
More then 50 people of all ages joined in Toronto August 2, 2018, in an international day of remembrance and recognition of the Romani Holocaust (Porajmos) in Europe. They heard Arif Virani, federal member of parliament for Toronto Parkdale-High Park, read a statement issued that day by Justin Trudeau’s government which said, in part:
"On Romani Genocide Remembrance Day, we honour the memory of over 500,000 Romani who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators in Europe. This genocide and the unspeakable violence inflicted on the Romani people are not widely known by the public, making them the ignored victims of WWII."
The statement is "the result of three years of...
