The Long March to Post-Capitalist Transition: Pan-Africanist Perspectives

Ameth Lô

The centenary of the October 1917 Russian Revolution, a world-shaking historic event, was an occasion for celebration throughout the world. Many diverse interpretations are advanced as to its success in achieving a radical transformation of society, both in terms of its history and its overall impact. Nonetheless, there is no denying that this event altered forever the course of history.

For Black peoples, this revolution arrived just over a century after the victory in Haiti in 1804. That event was the first massive and successful revolt of Black slaves, and an important step toward the long-overdue abolition of slavery worldwide.

The establishment of the first Black republic in the Northern hemisphere emerged from...

The bees!

SumOfUs members have stepped up to protect bees around the world. You've helped win historic pesticide bans in Europe and Canada.

A,

SumOfUs members like you really are saving the bees: this year you’ve helped win historic bans on bee-killing pesticides in Europe and Canada. And you’ve convinced major retailers in North America and Australia to start ditching toxic neonicotinoid pesticides.

Bees are one of the world’s most important pollinators of food crops. One third of the food we eat relies on bees to pollinate it -- from avocados to broccoli, and cherries to squash.

But the evidence is clear that toxic pesticides called neonicotinoids -- pushed by chemicals giants like Bayer and Syngenta -- are poisoning bee populations.

Every time we win, pesticide corporations fight back, desperate to protect their bee-killing profits. But thanks to SumOfUs members...

From Socialist Finance to Peripheral Financialization

From Socialist Finance to Peripheral Financialization: The Yugoslav Experience

Socialist countries have always had banks: central banks, savings banks taking local deposits, commercial banks, and export banks. Che Guevara was even the director of the National Bank of Cuba. What makes socialist banks “socialist”? And what are the relationships between socialist and global finance? How was socialist finance taken over by networks of secret services and company managers, who supported and structured the transition to authoritarian, capitalist parties in the late 1980s and 1990s? Here we look at the entanglements of global and socialist finance in Yugoslavia and to reflect on the new forms of peripheralization generated by financial flows in post-crisis Europe.

Health Canada says it wants to ban three bee-killing neonics in the next three to five years. But we know Bayer is busy looking for ways to overturn the ban and finding alternatives to neonics.

Come on Pepsi!

We still have time to fix Pepsi’s palm oil policy. Help tell CEO Indra Nooyi to leave a legacy of sustainable palm oil.

Pepsi’s CEO is stepping down, leaving a legacy filled with rainforest destruction, dying orangutans, and exploited workers for cheap palm oil.

But Indra Nooyi wants to be remembered for the good work she’s done. A huge public campaign could push her to fix Pepsi’s palm oil policy before she leaves.

Tell Indra Nooyi to make her final act count for the planet and close the loopholes in Pepsi’s palm oil policy.

Five Principles of a Socialist Climate Politics

Matthew Huber

Democratic socialism is in the air. Since Bernie Sanders’s miraculous 2016 primary run -- garnering 13.2 million votes and 23 state victories -- the politics of democratic socialism has grown in popularity. I believe this popularity is based on its capacity to articulate clear and simple principles. As Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (now famously) said on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, "I believe that in a modern, moral, and wealthy society, no person in America should be too poor to live." Who disagrees with that? It’s becoming clear that climate politics needs to catch up with these developments.

Many have recognized the need to articulate a "Medicare-for-all"-like strategy on climate change, where people could see how...

Urgent: 65 Days to the Vote - here's your chance to help when it matters most!

Just 60 days from today, ballots will be mailed out in BC's referendum on proportional representation! A win for PR in BC would be a win for Canada.

Here's your chance to help when it matters most.

In January, thanks to your generous support, we were able to hire a BC On-the-Ground Organizer - with enough money to fund the position for six months. He has been doing a great job for us building up support for proportional representation, but that money is now gone.

If we want to keep our On-the-Ground Organizer in these critical months ahead, we must raise at least $15,000 now.

Can you chip in?
