Friend --
After talking with my family and community members, I've decided to seek re-election to the office of city councillor and regional director in Victoria.
We've made progress over the past term, on issues including housing affordability, sustainable transportation, environmental protection and good government. This includes securing a $90-million investment in the Regional Housing First Program, increasing funding for community centres and seniors centres by more than 50%, improving options for walking and cycling, and being the first municipality in British Columbia to eliminate single-use plastic bags as a first step toward a broader zero-waste strategy.
But there is much more work to do. I believe that local government must do more to guarantee the right of all people to:
- live with dignity in safe, energy-efficient, affordable housing;
- live in a healthy environment with a stable climate, sustainable transportation options and access to nature, clean air, fresh water...
You are being gouged

Hi PAOV,
Can you remember what you were doing when you were 12?
This month I want to celebrate the next generation of heroes by sharing some of the incredible young people changing the world on our platform: tackling issues like single-use plastic, protecting students from sexual abuse, and food waste.

Like many others (unless they are in a state of simple denial), I sometimes feel paralyzed by the enormity of the environmental challenge.
How to break through this?
We must begin with the certainties.
First is the science. Not every aspect of it, of course, but the basic contours. The most in-depth, up-to-date, and accessible account is Ian Angus’s 2016 Monthly Review Press book, Facing the Anthropocene: Fossil Capitalism and the Crisis of the Earth System. When you read this book, you will see how in some respects the point of no return has already been reached. But even if full collapse is only a matter of time, many life-and-death choices will still confront us along the...

Will the Ontario Labour Movement Return to Class Struggle as Austerity Deepens?
Sam Gindin and Michael Hurley
The Ontario labour movement is in deep crisis. Some impressive struggles aside, it has been staggering since the end of the great mobilizations of the 1990s. Given the labour movement’s historic role in leading and supporting progressive change, its current disorientation should be a matter of alarm to its members of course, but also to anyone concerned with countering the insatiable greed and social destructiveness of capitalism.
There is a tendency within the Canadian labour movement -- reinforced as we head into Labour Day -- to reduce this crisis to a lack of unity. But the content of ‘unity’ matters and is inseparable from the question of...

News is just breaking across the country that the courts have quashed Trudeau’s approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline.
This is a HUGE win -- but our the Federal Government will soon own the pipeline and will fight back. Now is the time to tell Trudeau to honour the court’s decision and stop the Trans Mountain pipeline.
A,

PAOV,
I’m speechless.
This morning, Canada's Federal Court of Appeal overturned the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline approval.
This is a huge victory for Indigenous rights, for communities and for our planet.
All I have to say today is thank you. To the Indigenous Peoples who have led this movement in since day one, to the countless organizers who helped to raise funds and support for these court cases and for the movement that has been relentless in shining a light on how broken Canada’s pipeline reviews are.

The NRA is in financial trouble and may soon have to stop production on NRATV, its mouthpiece for racist conspiracy theories and pro-assault rifle propaganda.
Amazon can put the last nail in the coffin of NRATV by refusing to stream it. Tell Amazon to dump NRATV now!
A,
Burning cross onesies for infants. Swastika pendants. Lynching images. Those are some of the awful, racist merchandise you could buy on Amazon -- until now.
That’s right, because of SumOfUs members like you and our partners at Action Center on Race and the Economy and Partnership for Working Families, Amazon is dropping these items from its storefront. This is...

Ford’s Attack on Toronto:
The End of Local Democracy As We Know It?
Tim Heffernan and Greg Albo
There’s a lot to be said about the new Doug Ford-led Conservative administration in Ontario, but it is Ford’s unilateral and radical reduction of the size of Toronto City Council in Bill 5, the Better Local Government Act, that has drawn much of the initial attention and opprobrium. We need to consider the reaction to it from the local left and how the new situation may open up a new terrain for the socialist left to intervene in the October 22 Toronto election (and other local elections across the province).
Despite the initial dissent from expected quarters -- political junkies, the so-called ‘downtown elites’, community activists,...
