Nicaragua: The Other Revolution Betrayed

Nathan Legrand and Éric Toussaint

The violent repression against demonstrators protesting brutal neoliberal policies, which resulted in more than 300 people being killed by regime forces since April 2018, is just one of the reasons why different leftist social movements have condemned the Nicaraguan regime led by President Daniel Ortega and Vice-president Rosario Murillo. The Left has many more reasons to denounce the policies of the regime. To understand this, we must go back to 1979.

The Sandinista Revolution

1979 saw the victory of an authentic revolution in Nicaragua that combined a popular uprising, self-organization of cities and neighborhoods in rebellion, and the action of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (in Spanish -- Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional...

We could make net neutrality law and stop corporate takeover of the internet

We have less than a week to make sure Canada protects the internet from corporate control.

Tell the CRTC to update the rules that govern Canada’s internet to keep corporations like Bell from threatening net neutrality.

A,

We have a massive opportunity right now to influence the regulations that govern the internet. The Broadcasting and Telecommunications legislation -- written in 1991 before the internet was a household norm -- is currently up for review by the federal government.

NAFTA Renewed. Now What?

Sam Gindin

On September 30, 2018, a month after the U.S. and Mexico moved toward replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada joined to produce a new continental trade agreement. The new pact, as highlighted in the article below (written just after Canada signed on) focused especially on securing automotive jobs in the U.S. and Canada. The two governments celebrated the agreement, joined especially by the leadership of Unifor, representing Canadian autoworkers. The American autoworker’s union, the UAW, was more cautious and the Mexican government was relieved that the pressures to limit production in Mexico were restrained. Within weeks, General Motors (GM) dramatically confirmed the limits of the agreement, announcing the closure of four plants in the U.S. and...

Hotels vs Housing?

Hotels vs Housing?
Platforms, Rent and Resistance in Toronto

Whether it is called the collaborative, platform, crowd-sourcing, or ‘sharing’ economy, the rise of peer-to-peer exchanges raises important questions for workers and unions. Do emerging platforms such as Uber and AirBnB mark a significant shift in rent-seeking production and distribution systems? Are they emancipatory or exploitive? How can they be regulated across multiple jurisdictions and multiple platforms (e.g., AirBnB, Homestay, Uber, Lyft)? Despite the early success of these services with consumers, there are contradictions for the future of work. New digital platforms continue to erode traditional employment relationships and threaten unionized jobs in existing sectors. Short-term rentals facilitated by platforms such as AirBnB have created ‘ghost hotels’ that undermine rental housing markets and the traditional hotel sector and...

NAFTA 2.0: Nothing for Workers

NAFTA 2.0: Nothing for Workers

Bruce Allen

The year 2019 begins with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) 2.0 already standing exposed as another corporate trade agreement with no one, including union leaders, having paid attention to what has just happened with respect to it. Specifically, the highly praised Labour chapter to the new trade agreement (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) that was formally signed in Buenos Aires on November 30 concluded with the following declaration. "It is the expectation of the Parties that Mexico shall adopt legislation described above before January 1, 2019. It is further understood that entry into force of the agreement may be delayed until such legislation becomes effective."

The legislation described above in the Labour chapter would make sweeping improvements...

Seasons Greetings from France’s Yellow Vests: "We Are Not Tired"

Richard Greeman

Is the Yellow Vest (Gilets Jaunes) rebellion, now in its seventh week, "petering out?" Such was the near-unanimous pronouncement of the mainstream media, when I returned home to Montpellier, France, eager to participate and to observe first-hand this popular insurrection which I had been afraid of missing.

I needn’t have worried. By nine o’clock last Saturday morning (December 22), hundreds of Yellow Vest demonstrators were gathering for a peaceful march to the Préfecture (local seat of government) chanting "We’re not tired" and carrying placards reading "We are not casseurs (vandals) or pyromaniacs. Peaceful." The mood was bon enfant ("jolly") with demonstrators en famille including the children and old folks in wheelchairs. Marching...
