Simple actions to send a big message.

Thanks for pulling together to stop Kinder Morgan. r1

Friends,

We asked for your support last week and your response blew us away. In less than a week we raised almost $2,000 for First Nations legal cases to stop Kinder Morgan. Thank you for your generosity and for spreading the word.

On Monday, First Nations challenging the approval of Kinder Morgan will go to Canada’s highest courts. These Indigenous-led legal cases are our best chance of overturning Trudeau's decision to approve this pipeline. Taking the government and Big Oil to court isn’t cheap -- and these communities are looking for support to pay for their legal fees. If you can, show your support. Sign up to host a fundraiser in your community.

Your fundraiser doesn’t need to be too complicated. You...

Intentional Neglect or Callous Oversight?:
How ‘Progressive’ Basic Income Proposals Fail Migrants

Yogi Acharya and A.J. Withers

In the debate around the pros and cons of basic income, the implications for immigrants are seldom discussed. This omission, whether intentional or a product of indifference, is particularly glaring in progressive pro-Basic Income (BI) literature where the term "citizen’s income" is often used synonymously. Taken together, a troubling picture emerges of what is imagined for basic income and who is to be included within it. While basic income is often promoted in the name of social justice, we will demonstrate that this vision is flawed and excludes migrants -- which we argue is both profoundly unjust and works to reinforce the white supremacy and class hierarchies that...

Prison vs. Ballot Boxes in Spain: A Toxic Cocktail in a Democracy

As democrats, we feel an obligation to protest strongly to the government of Mariano Rajoy. After having deployed in 2010 the arsenal of the Constitutional Court to block an agreement that granted further autonomy to Catalonia within Spain, this government is now working to block the electoral process of the Catalan people. Over and above the right of peoples to self-determination, recognized in the United Nations Charter, it is democracy itself that is now being battered.

This is intolerable. It is intolerable to turn our heads and leave to their fate the Catalan people, denying them in the eyes of the entire world the right to vote...

Catalonia Referendum: Resisting the Spanish Government Siege

Dick Nichols

In 1713-14, it took the troops of Spain’s Borbon monarchy 14 months of siege before taking Barcelona and ending Catalan self-rule. In September 2017, Catalonia is again under siege, this time from the central Spanish People’s Party (PP) government. Under prime minister Mariano Rajoy the Spanish state is concentrating all its firepower on stopping the Catalan government’s October 1 independence referendum. On that day, if this siege is successfully resisted, Catalan citizens will vote on whether "Catalonia should become an independent state in the form of a republic."

Since September 6, the day its parliament adopted its referendum law, Catalonia has experienced a "shock and awe" offensive aimed at forcing the pro-independence government of premier...

In Defence of Democratic Rights in Catalonia

José Luis Martínez

In Catalonia an important process of independence is taking place against Spain. At the request of the Popular Party (PP), the Spanish Constitutional Court declared the Catalan Statute of 2010, unconstitutional. This statute was negotiated between the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and later endorsed by the Spanish Parliament. Since then, the number of Catalans who want to become independent from Spain has not stopped growing.

The degree of autonomy that Catalonia was going to reach was far too much for a right-wing party as the PP, despite the 2010 statute cuts which were decided by the Spanish parliament.

Public meeting: The Fight for 15 - What Next?

The Fight for 15 - What Next?

When: Tuesday September 26th, 7pm
Where: Steelworkers' Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto.

Jonathan Rosenblum, union activist from Seattle and author of recently published Beyond $15, will be talking about the lessons to be learned from the struggle for $15 in the USA. Rosenblum's experience will be of particular interest to activists in the $15 and Fairness movement in Ontario.

Deena Ladd from the Workers' Action Centre will be talking about the Ontario movement - its successes and what lies ahead. We've won $15 or have we? Where to next?

The focus of this forum will, we hope, go beyond celebrating the very impressive gains made on this front to ask a couple of follow-up questions this victory raised. First, what are the limits of such struggles? Do they develop larger capacities that can in turn be built on?...

Its time to pull together to stop Kinder Morgan.

Kinder Morgan received its final permit to start construction. We’re ready to resist. r1

Friends,

Last week, the Port of Vancouver approved Kinder Morgan’s permit to begin construction on their tanker terminal on the Burrard Inlet.

This is disappointing but we know that the fight to stop Kinder Morgan is far from over. In a couple of weeks, Indigenous communities are headed to federal courts to challenge Justin Trudeau’s unjust and illegitimate approval of Kinder Morgan. Sign up to fundraise for First Nations legal cases against Kinder Morgan.

The federal government and its institutions, including the Port of Vancouver, are failing to stand up for people, the planet and the rights of Indigenous peoples. Indeed, Prime Minister Trudeau might be one of the most ardent Kinder Morgan supporters in the country right now. In this moment, one thing is clear: it’s...
