Democracy Watch’s Duff Conacher on CTV

on how Finance Minister Morneau’s scheme is just the tip of an unethical iceberg in politics, and how Democracy Watch’s campaigns and court cases are pushing to clean it all up (to see the video, click here)

Dear Friend,

Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau has been caught red-handed in a conflict of interest. He owned part of his family’s company, and made decisions that would help the company, and himself, make more money.

So Morneau’s going to face a big...

Deforestation

Cadbury is using illegally-grown cocoa in its products, driving rainforest destruction in West Africa.

Tell Cadbury to pledge to stop deforestation -- now.

Sign the Petition

A,

Cadbury is funding an environmental crisis in West Africa by buying illegally-grown cocoa beans from the area, a new investigation has revealed.

Mondelez, which owns Cadbury, has been sourcing beans that come from protected areas and national parks in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, driving rainforest destruction for cocoa production.

If this goes on, in just 13 years there will be almost no rainforest left at all.

And the crisis is having a huge impact on local wildlife too -- chimpanzees are being driven from their...

CAMI Strike 2017:
After Another Setback Can Unifor Move On?

Herman Rosenfeld

A four-week strike at the CAMI assembly plant, that began on September 17th, ended on October 16th. Members of Unifor Local 88 voted 86% in favour of the tentative agreement bargained with the stand-alone GM plant. Located in Ingersoll, Ontario, close to London, it is a former joint venture between Suzuki and GM. CAMI assembles hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox crossover vehicles.

CAMI has an interesting history, and it is reflected in the membership of Local 88. It was originally opened in 1988 as a ‘model’ team concept plant. It integrated key elements of Lean Production -- modeled on the Toyota Production System -- with promises of ‘worker empowerment’ and job satisfaction. Suzuki’s production...

Airport crash

Lufthansa is putting workers at risk by refusing to use air conditioning in trucks -- just to save a few bucks. Exposed to extreme heat, workers are dizzy, dehydrated and passing out -- in one case, causing a crash.

The workers’ union UNITE HERE is fighting back, but they need a global movement to force Lufthansa to do the right thing. Demand Lufthansa install air conditioning and ensure safe conditions!

Free Transit Now!

Free Transit Now!

In principle, free transit advocacy can also be an element in a broader vision to reorganize urban life and restructure the social order along red (working class-based, working toward socialism) and green (environmental) lines. This requires working through a host of open questions that go far beyond lowering the cost of fares. These include:

* How can a free and expanded transit system be financed?
* Can free transit be part and parcel of a green jobs strategy against austerity?
* Is free transit a potential weapon against global climate injustice

Corporate intimidation of non-profits

Enbridge and Resolute are intimidating activist organizations in what seems like an attempt to silence them from speaking out about environmentally-destructive projects.

Tell Enbridge, Resolute, and other corporate bullies to stop these obvious intimidation tactics towards non-profit organizations.

Sign the Petition

A,

This week oil giant Enbridge sent sheriffs to environmental group Stand.earth’s office to seize their computers, furniture, and even office microwave to pay back $14,000 in court costs.

Later the same day, after a huge outcry in the press and on social media, Enbridge switched its tune and stopped the sheriffs from collecting the assets. For a company that had $34.5 billion in revenues last year, chasing down a...

Ontario Colleges On Strike

More than 12,000 Ontario public college faculty were on the picket line rather than in their classrooms on Monday morning after talks between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the College Employer Council failed to produce a tentative collective agreement.

"On October 14, we presented Council with a streamlined offer that represented what faculty consider to be the bare minimum we need to ensure quality education for students and treat contract faculty fairly," said JP Hornick, chair of the union bargaining team. "We carefully crafted a proposal that responded to Council’s concerns about costs in a fair and reasonable way."

"Unfortunately, Council refused to agree on even the no-cost items, such as longer contracts for contract faculty and...

What you can do for #MeToo

The #MeToo campaign has made sexual violence impossible to ignore - we need to seize this opportunity to take action.

Call on the BC government to take a concrete step towards addressing sexual harassment and violence on university campuses where sexual assault is far too common.

Sign the petition

This week, our social media feeds lit up with the hashtag #MeToo. This powerful -- and at-times painful -- campaign has raised awareness of how many women, femmes, and non-binary people are impacted by sexual harassment and violence.

The sheer volume of people sharing the hashtag has made it clear that almost no woman has been free of this issue in her lifetime. But now we have an opportunity to turn this social media conversation into action.

Canada’s Ongoing Complicity with Exploitive Extraction Schemes

Niko Block

On June 15, 1841, the newly established Legislative Council of the Province of Canada -- a body of twenty-four appointed lawmakers -- was gathered in its chamber in Kingston. Its speaker, a businessman and nationalist named Austin Cuvilliers, began the day’s proceedings by reminding his peers of their mandate: "Many subjects of deep importance to the future welfare of the Province demand your early attention," he said, but the most important of them "is the adoption of measures for developing the resources of the Province. The rapid settlement of the country, the value of every man’s property within it, the advancement of his future fortunes are deeply affected by this question."

Three months later, the...
