Balfour at 100: A Legacy of Racism and Propaganda

Dan Freeman-Maloy

The coming months mark the centennial of Palestine’s forcible incorporation into the British Empire. In November 1917, British foreign secretary Lord Arthur Balfour declared his government’s support for "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people"; in December, Jerusalem fell to British troops. One hundred years later, the effects of these events continue to reverberate. This should be a time of sombre reflection about international responsibility for the unfolding tragedy in Palestine.

This responsibility should weigh heavily on the West. Walid Khalidi put it well: "The Zionists were the initiators. But they were also, as they still are, the protégés of their Anglo--American sponsors and the emanations of their...

WestJet

Warning: trigger alert — this may be very difficult to read as the content refers to sexual assault.

WestJet is trying to get a class action lawsuit stricken that could blow the lid off of a massive sexual assault scandal at the airline.

The lawsuit is being heard in just 2 days -- and we want to make sure these brave flight attendants speaking out know we have their back.

Will you add your name now to the petition calling on

Unions and the Gig-Economy: The Case of AirBnB

Unions and the Gig-Economy: The Case of AirBnB

Steven Tufts

The so-called gig-economy is celebrated, maligned, fetishized, and qualified by analysts. Whether it is called the collaborative, platform, crowd-sourcing, or sharing-economy, the rise of peer-to-peer exchanges does raise important questions for workers. Do emerging ‘sharing-economy’ platforms such as Uber and Airbnb mark a significant shift in production and distribution systems? Are they emancipatory or exploitive? How can they be regulated across multiple jurisdictions and multiple platforms (e.g., Airbnb, Homestay, Uber, Lyft)? These and other questions have been raised by those emphasizing the platforms as a growing source of employment for contingent workers and their power to transform waged work into different relationships such as dependent contracts. Kim Moody recently offered that these platforms are simply...

Cadbury

A,

Have you seen that chocolate companies are helping to fuel an environmental crisis in West Africa?

A new report states that there could be just 13 years of rainforest left in Cote d’Ivoire, thanks to cocoa grown illegally in protected areas. As well as causing an environmental disaster, this is also destroying the habitat of native species like elephants and chimpanzees.

Over 160,000 SumOfUs members have signed the petition calling for Cadbury and Ferrero to commit to ending new deforestation. Chocolate companies will be making a statement at the Bonn climate conference this week, so let’s make sure they hear from as many of us beforehand!

Every name counts -- please could you add yours and help end this crisis before it’s too late?

Tell Cadbury to commit to no new deforestation for cocoa worldwide.

The Revolution Party

Leo Panitch

A fresh and compelling new account of the Russian revolution to mark its centenary concludes by paying tribute to the Bolsheviks for acting as history’s switchmen, a term derived from the small booths that dotted the railway tracks across the Russian empire, where local revolutionaries had long gathered for clandestine meetings. Against those so-called ‘legal Marxists’ who in 1917 used the term as an epithet to scorn those who would try to divert the locomotive of history on its route from the feudal to the capitalist political station it was scheduled to arrive at before it could depart for its final socialist destination, China Miéville asks: ‘What could be more inimical to any trace of teleology than those who take...

Sign the Pacific Climate Warriors Declaration and #HaveYourSei

I’m heading to the UN Climate Meeting, COP23, in Bonn with the Pacific Climate Warriors to deliver our demands for a Fossil Free world. r1

Bula friends,

We, the Pacific Climate Warriors, are weary from waiting for world leaders to take the necessary action to create a Fossil Free world. So we are taking matters into our own hands ahead of this year’s climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany, and we need you with us.

Along with people representing 12 Pacific Island nations, we’ve launched the Pacific Climate Warriors Declaration on Climate Change, outlining what needs to be done to avoid further climate catastrophe. We are asking you and people around the world to show your solidarity with the Pacific by signing our Declaration.

This year, Fiji holds the Presidency of COP23, the UN Climate Talks. So, it is a key time to highlight Pacific leadership on climate action. Rising...

NOOOOO, France!

URGENT: a new bee-killing pesticide has just been approved in France and we don't have much time to fight this decision!

The French Environment Minister can still stop this attack on the bees -- but we need a global outcry to get him to stand up against the pesticide industry!

A,

We’ve just learned that regulators in France have authorised the use of a new bee-killing pesticide called Sulfoxaflor. It’s a neonicotinoid -- the class of pesticides that is known to pose a deadly risk for bees and other pollinators.

We still can’t believe it!

France has been at the forefront of the battle to protect...
