Tax Cuts: Its All About Capitalism

Marty Hart-Landsberg

Powerful corporations and the rich in the United States continue their winning ways. By narrow margins, both the House of Representatives and Senate have agreed on a budget proposal that calls for an increase in the federal deficit of $1.5-trillion in order to fund a major reform of the U.S. tax system that will make the rich and powerful even more so.

Republicans in each house of Congress still need to work out the specifics of their desired tax reform and then negotiate any differences before they can send the budget to President Trump for his signature. But, there seems to be general consensus on the following business tax changes:

* slash the top tax...

“Intersex Children Dont Need Fixing”

Open Society Foundations Kimberly Zieselman
For too long, intersex people were hidden. People born with bodies that do not fit into the typical medical categories of either male or female have always existed; they’re born about as often as redheads, in fact. But now the intersex rights movement—and its demand to end unnecessary “normalizing” surgeries on intersex babies and children—has finally started to gain traction. There’s a lot of work left to be done, of course. Now that intersex people are embracing their identities and speaking out, however, a world where intersex people no longer have to hide is finally coming into view.

We stopped Kinder Morgan construction

This Saturday, kayaktivists stopped construction on Kinder Morgan r1

Friends,

This weekend I joined over 100 kayaktivists in Vancouver to stop construction on Kinder Morgan.

Together, we paddled out to the Kinder Morgan supertanker port where the company has begun construction on its dangerous Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. With our kayaks and canoes, we encircled Kinder Morgan’s barge, preventing the company from doing any work on the terminal.

At the end of the day, five of these bold kayaktivists were arrested. It was one of the most beautiful and powerful actions I have ever been a part of. Watch this video from Saturday to see for yourself:

Joined by leaders from Indigenous communities fighting Kinder Morgan on the frontlines, we demonstrated to politicians like Prime Minister Trudeau that people power will most...

Now's Our Chance to Fight for $15

NationBuilder r1 FWC_Dates_email-01.jpg
Friend --

Too many people in BC are working hard, often in more than one job, but still not making ends meet. Many workers tell us: we needed a $15 minimum wage yesterday! After many years of mobilizing, now is our opportunity to show the government that we need this increase for all employees, no exceptions.

Thanks to your hard work, the provincial government has launched a new Fair Wages Commission. Right now, the Fair Wages Commission is examining:

  1. Timelines for increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour.
  2. What to do with the minimum wage rates for farm workers, liquor servers, live-in caregivers, resident caretakers, and live-in camp leaders, which are lower than the general minimum wage ($11.35).
The Fair Wages Commission will be travelling across the province looking for input on these issues. We already know what Big Business will say, but we want to make sure...

Nestlé baby milk

Nestlé has just been caught at it again -- using manipulative marketing tactics to take advantage of families and infants around the world.

Tell Nestlé’s CEO to let nutritional science -- not corporate greed -- lead the company’s infant formula product strategy.

Sign the Petition

A,

Nestlé boasts that it has over 150 years of trusted nutrition expertise, but it is also notorious for manipulative marketing of infant formula wherever it can get away with it.

A report just published reveals a telling lack of nutritional science behind the ever-expanding product ranges of the world’s top four baby milk companies. Now is our best chance to force Nestlé and...

Communiqué on the Situation in Catalonia

A Socialist Project e-bulletin .... No. 1505 .... November 1, 2017

Following the Catalan Parliament's declaration of independence on October 27, Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias tweeted: "We are against repression and for a negotiated referendum [which the Madrid government refused to Catalonia] but the declaration of independence is illegitimate and favours the strategy of the PP [People's Party, headed by Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy]."

However, the Anticapitalistas current in Podemos (spokepersons MEP Miguel Urban and Podemos Andalusia general secretary Teresa Rodriguez) issued the following statement recognizing the result of the October 1 referendum.

They Dared: The Legacy of the October Revolution

David Mandel

A hundred years later, the question of the historical legacy of the October Revolution is not an easy one for socialists, given that Stalinism took root within less than a decade after that revolution and the restoration of capitalism seventy years later met little popular resistance. One can, of course, point to the central role of the Red Army in the victory over fascism, or to the rivalry between the Soviet Union and the capitalist world that broadened the space for anti-imperialist struggles, or to the moderating effect on capitalist appetites of the existence of a major nationalized, planned economy. Yet, even in these areas, the legacy is far from unambiguous.

But the main...

A New Stage Opens in the Spanish State's War on Catalan Self-Rule

A New Stage Opens in the Spanish State's War on Catalan Self-Rule

Spanish PM Rajoy reacts to declaration of independence by launching assault on Catalonia's government, parliament and other institutions.

The Spanish government's war on Catalan autonomy and democracy is now in full offensive mode, following the Catalan parliament's October 27 decision to proclaim their nation's independence of the Spanish state.

In the following article, Dick Nichols, Barcelona correspondent of Green Left Weekly, reports on the sequence of events in recent days and since October 1, when a majority of Catalans -- resisting massive repression by Spanish police -- voted or tried to vote for independence.

I follow these reports with a brief summary of key provisions of the Catalan Declaration of Independence,...
