My trip to the ice to meet baby seals

Dear PAOV,
Right now, baby seals are being shot, clubbed to death, and skinned in in Atlantic Canada. Nearly all of the victims of the commercial seal slaughter are baby seals—less than three months old. They are brutally killed so their fur can become luxury fashion items.
I joined colleagues from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society last month to visit baby seals on the ice before the slaughter opened. Our crew included Hollywood actress Michelle Rodriguez, a kind and passionate advocate for animals who was there to remind the world about the bloody slaughter.
I've been lucky enough to visit baby seals many times, but every single trip to their icy home...

NAFTA Redux
Ernie Tate
The new Trump administration has made the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, Mexico and the United States, a major issue in its relations with its two neighbours. Recently, Trump has threatened to tear it up. With his standard nationalist demagogy, he claims "previous bad trade deals," have cost the United States many jobs as a result of American manufacturers moving plants off-shore. He is now in the process of telling Canada and Mexico the new administration is prepared to bully its way to a new and more favourable arrangement for itself.
There are no smiley faces, no comforting talk about making the deal "work for everyone"; instead the administration, casting the niceties of diplomacy aside, is using...

Trump's bluster suggests rushed NAFTA talks concluding by April 2018
By yesterday evening, U.S. President Donald Trump pulled back from his comment made earlier in the day that he would issue an executive order to withdraw the United States from NAFTA. But yesterday's bluster suggests that negotiations could begin this August and be concluded by April 2018.

A new report suggests the BC Liberal government is turning a blind eye to climate pollution from fracking.
A flood of messages could force Christy Clark to monitor and tax methane leaks -- or admit to voters that she's still letting her big-money fracking donors off the hook.
Send a messageA scathing report from the David Suzuki Foundation shows that climate-killing methane leaks from BC’s fracking industry are at least 2.5 times higher than reported by Christy Clark’s government. [1]
The report shows that methane emissions from fracking create more global warming pollution than putting 2 million more cars on the road. [2]
Outrageously, the BC Liberal government doesn’t even bother monitoring methane emissions from fracking -- and they don’t apply the carbon tax to methane leaks. [3]

Climate Struggles and Ecosocialism
The hard right U.S. administration of Donald Trump has widened the terrain of struggle over climate change and, indeed, the entire array of environmental issues facing the ecology of North America and the working class movement. Climate change deniers, big oil executives, and finance capitalists now occupy pivotal positions in an array of state agencies and apparatuses directly impacting these portfolios. Some of the first decisions of the new administration have been to expand pipeline development (of both the Dakota Access and the Keystone XL), further open spaces for fossil fuel extraction, and gut the Environmental Protection Agency. Alongside the continued expansion of the tar sands in Canada, the North American energy superpowers are being pushed further down the path of ‘extreme...

Basic Income and the Left:
The Political and Economic Problems
David Bush
Should the Left and labour support a demand for a Basic Income (BI)? This simple question has provoked a fervent and confusing debate. The discussion over BI touches on real political and economic anxieties. The attack on the social welfare state, the depreciating power of organized labour and an economy producing increasingly low-wage precarious jobs have led many to search for alternative mechanisms and policies to address these problems. It is no wonder that BI with its promise of streamlined access to minimal economic security has attracted many adherents on the Left.
Discussing BI with clarity is made difficult because of the sweeping scope and abstractness of the issue. Debates over BI...
