New Post: Accident at Hanford

Accident at Hanford

News wires have been buzzing about a tunnel cave-in at the Hanford nuclear facility in Washington State. The Hanford facility is extremely large, 580-square miles, or about half the size of the state of Rhode Island. It produced the plutonium used in the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, and during the cold war facilities were greatly expanded for weapons production. The last reactor at Hanford was shut down in 1987, and decommissioning and cleanup operations have been ongoing since 1989. The site has been fraught with problems stemming from the storage of radioactive waste, and because of the risk of releases of radioactive material to the environment, particularly the nearby Columbia River, it is closely watched by environmental groups.

The accident yesterday involved the collapse of a small (20 x 20 foot) section of a storage tunnel built as part of the Plutonium Uranium Extraction Facility (PUREX), detected by workers on the morning of May 9th. These tunnels, constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s, hold rail cars loaded with contaminated discarded equipment. They were constructed of wood and concrete and covered with approximately 8 feet of soil. The collapse is probably due to the degradation of wood used in construction.

The Corruption of a Dream

Oupa Lehulere

"Behind every great fortune there is a crime."
--- Honoré de Balzac

The SASSA scandal currently unfolding is probably the most dramatic expression of how far the African National Congress (ANC) has traveled since its days of opposition to apartheid. [SASSA stands for South Africa Social Security Agency, which is the agency that pays social grants to about 17 million beneficiaries.] Under apartheid, ANC activists were associated with laying down their lives in defending and advancing the interests of the mass of the people -- in particular the black working class. Today, the cadre of the ANC is associated with stealing from the mass of people they used to die for. It is now commonly accepted, including...

Childcare Now! The Struggle for Quality, Universal Childcare

Childcare Now! The Struggle for Quality, Universal Childcare

Shellie Bird, Candace Rennick, Michael Hurley

In 1991, 20 per cent of childcare workers belonged to a union. This stands at 21 per cent today. Despite their stated commitment to organize women in the wage ghetto of childcare, unions have essentially forsaken one of the most vulnerable, underpaid and undervalued female dominated workforces in this country.

Universal, quality, accessible, free, not-for-profit, childcare is the goal. But while unionization of childcare workers has increased marginally in a 25-year period, for-profit delivery of childcare spaces grew by 33 per cent in a 10-year period ending in 2014.

The childcare workforce deserves decent wages, benefits and good working conditions -- they deserve a union. But, unions in Canada...

Canada's 150th: A Québécois View

Canada’s 150th: A Québécois View

André Binette

Each sovereign state can choose the date of its national holiday. Generally, this date recalls the accession to independence. The United States, for example, chose to emphasize each year their unilateral declaration of independence of July 4, 1776. They preferred this date to the date of the Treaty of Paris, 1783, which ended the revolutionary war they had won thanks to France's decisive support. Their national holiday commemorates a founding act.

In France, where the origin of independence is lost in the mists of time, they remember the 14th of July, the fall of the Bastille, as the passage from monarchy to the Republic, the founding act of modern France. Unlike some other countries, the United Kingdom...

Im at the tar sands right now.

Follow along and support the Raise A Paddle Journey. r1

Friends,

Right now, I am standing in the tar sands with my friends from the Pacific Islands. These Pacific Climate Warriors have come here from the other side of the world to bear witness to one of the most destructive fossil fuel sites in the world. They are also here to raise their paddles in resistance alongside Indigenous communities in North America.

It’s gut wrenching to be here in the tar sands -- breathing in the fumes, seeing the colossal waste sites, and coming face to face with the monstrosity that I have been fighting against for over a decade. But the Pacific Climate Warriors’ spirit of resilience is bringing me strength. To see our live updates from this journey, including footage from an aerial tour of...
